3 My IALP Affiliation History 1976: first heard about IALP. 1995: presented a paper at The international Symposium on Communication Disorders in Bilingual Populations, Haifa, Israel. Organized by: Israeli Speech, Hearing, and Language Association, an IALP affiliate. The symposium was a satellite meeting of: 23 rd World Congress of IALP in Cairo, Egypt. 1997: joined as an individual member of IALP sponsored by Michel Paradis, Montreal researcher in Aphasia in bilingual populations.

4 My IALP Affiliation 1997: Invited to join the IALP Multilingual Affairs Committee (I-MAC) : member of I-MAC 2010-Present: I-MAC adviser/consultant: literacy in multilingual populations IALP Child Language Committee (I-CLC) Member: Chaired by: Yvette D Hyter, USA.

5 IALP Roots The IALP the oldest international organization was established in Vienna, Austria in 1924 by Dr. Emil Froeschels, Otolaryngologist. Work: Developed theories & approaches for helping children and adults with speech, voice and language impairments. His vision: Bringing together physicians and clinicians from around the world. He coined the term logopedics Duchan J. (SUNY Buffalo): a giant in the profession of speech pathology both in Europe and America. He served as a crucial bridge between European and American Speech Pathology, in the 1940s.

7 Gallagher IALP vision & Mission This expanded vision serves to enrich their work on behalf of individuals with communication disorders and reduce geographical and political barriers to the highest levels of scientific inquiry and service. Looking at problems from various points of view informs us all and creates a better understanding of communication sciences and disorders from the broadest geo-politicalsocio-cultural context

8 IALP Association with United Nations The organization has consultative status with the World Health Organization of the United Nations & works in association with the UN Department of Public Information. Why liaise with the WHO? 9 Membership Our members, scientists, physicians, speech-language pathologists, and practitioners work in over 57 countries and come from every continent around the world. IALP works closely with the 58 Affiliated Societies that comprise its world-wide partners.

10 Membership The affiliated societies of the IALP are in North and South America, Asia, Africa, Australia & Europe: represent 230,000 members. Individual membership is for professionals within the field of human communication disorders and sciences. IALP has over 400 individual members from 54 countries throughout the globe. 12 IALP Information Sharing Venues Through its meetings and publications IALP provides a venue for sharing recent research findings, educational and professional advances, and public information. IALP Meetings: organized in collaboration with affiliate societies. Congresses: Every three years, the IALP holds an international congress- where scientists, practitioners, and other interested professionals from around the globe convene (share, care, & party for we are a fun loving lot!) Symposia/Composia*: meetings organized by various committees or affiliate societies where research and clinical papers are presented on a specific topic relevant to the specific interest of the committee or society. *(Composia: not yet adopted into English dictionary but it s coming!)

20 Relevance of IALP in today s world According to Dolores Battle, Past President The IALP is important in a world where profession practice and research know no boundaries. The IALP provides practicing professionals and researchers in speech, language hearing and swallowing the window to the world. The IALP is unique in the world as a vehicle for partnerships between speech language pathologists and physicians interested in the study of human communication and its disorders. As the world marketplace has become more global, so too must our professions become more global. As an association with an 80 year history, the IALP has been and will continue to be a worldwide leader facilitating the acquisition and dissemination of research and practice issues to professionals around the globe.

24 What has IALP done for me? It has allowed me to connect with my counterparts from around the world whose concerns and outstanding work is centred on improving the life quality of young and old with communication, voice & swallowing disorders.
