3 720ATD 72 Double opposing head drill with solid electrically welded steel running base for the two traditionally C shaped drill structures, on which the drilling heads are fixed. From a mechanical and electronic point of view, the machine has seven position axes and two speed axes. CONTROL ELECTRONICS PLC 13 The drill machine operations are managed by a PLC controller which communicates constantly with a Personal Computer. The operator interface is created by a 13 liquid crystal screen and a keyboard for the input of operating data. The switchboard is positioned at one end of the base. Bottero S.p.A.Windows The interface program, created by Bottero S.p.A., in Windows environment, allows the operator to fully control the numeric control drill machine. It enables the preparation of drilling cycles, setting the coordinates of the holes on the sheets of glass and the technological data related to the drilling cycles (spindle rotation speed, rise and fall speed of the heads during operation, etc.). The same program performs constant diagnostics of the machine status, displaying any faults and giving the operator warning messages when it is necessary to perform specific procedures. The control panel, which houses the liquid crystal display, the keyboard, the various buttons (Start Cycle, Stop Cycle, Emergency, etc.) and the warning lamps, has been positioned in an area which is ergonomically convenient for the operator, who can monitor the operation of the drill machine both on screen and directly on the machine.

4 X1 X Axis X: ABUTMENT BRIDGE (detail 1) This structure travels on runners and a linear way carriage and enables the squaring and positioning of the sheet of glass in relation to the X coordinates to be drilled on the sheet itself. The longitudinal movement of the abutment bridge takes place through a recirculating ball screw. Y1Y2 2 C Y Axes Y1 and Y2: OPPOSING DRILLING STATIONS (details 2). The two C-shaped structures are arranged on the two sides, in the direction in of the glass sheet advancement, and they move transversally to the production flow on runners and a linear way carriage along the machine base. The movement takes place in relation to the Y coordinates of the holes to be made in the sheets of glass. In this case also, the movement is obtained thanks to recirculating ball screws. Z Axes Z1, Z2, Z3 and Z4: DRILLING HEADS (details 3) These are the axes that manage the vertical movement of the spindles. There are of course 4 spindles, respectively upper and lower on each drilling station. Their vertical movement, necessary in order to correctly carry out the drilling cycle, is performed by gears and is guided by a quill.

5 45X 6ENTRY AND EXIT CONVEYORS (details 4 and 5): They are made up of series of high friction belts which enable the movement of the glass sheet being machined along direction X. The movement of the belts and therefore the glass is controlled by a pair of brushless motors (Master Slave system), both in terms of speed and position. The inlet conveyor is equipped with an automatic system for laterally centring the sheets of glass. To understand the functioning above more fully, see the function diagram on the next page

6 The cycle takes place as follows: YThe sheet of glass, manually loaded onto the entry conveyor or arriving from a line of double edgers, is transported to the drilling area where is referenced and measured in length by an high precision sensor. Before the drilling cycle starts, a pneumatic table lifts up the glass while two linear cylinders are pushing it towards the lateral zero line made up of vertical rollers. In this way it will be perfectly in line with a precise position (detail 6). X The abutment bridge, moving along direction X, will stop in the position where the hole must be made in the sheet. When the latter is in contact with the abutment bridge, the glass will be locked in position and the drilling cycle can begin. The whole sequence is managed automatically. As soon as the cycle is over, the abutment bridge will allow the passage of the glass which will be moved from the exit roller group to the washing machine. Replacement of the diamond core bits on the spindles takes place manually. The drilling stations are automatically moved away from the glass passage area by computerized command, to enable the operator to perform the procedure comfortably and safely. The axes described above are managed by brushless motors with related control and encoders. 5000rpm The spindles are designed to operate at a rotation speed of 5000 rpm. The diamond core bits are cooled by a flow of water inside the spindle shaft. Each drilling station is equipped with an automatic system to extract the cores, which begins operating after the hole has been made.

7 ZThe machine can be equipped with a pair of automatic devices (optional) for dressing the diamond core bits. In this case, the dressing cycle is carried out at regular intervals set on the control computer: the stations withdraw and a pneumatic cylinder positions a block of abrasive material between the drilling heads.
