5 STRAUMANN VARIOBASE ABUTMENT Introduction The Straumann Variobase Abutment is an adhesive base and is therefore a solution for fabricating individualized abutments. The individual copings required can be fabricated in various ways (e.g. CADCAM, pressed ceramic). Adhesive bases meet the requirements for a wide range of clinical situations and enable reliable connections of various materials to Straumann implants. Variobase Abutments are characterized by their ease of use thanks to minimum geometry and precise positioning during bonding. 7 STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR PROSTHETIC PROCEDURES ILLUSTRATED USING A STRAUMANN BONE LEVEL IMPLANT (RC) SCANNING Step 1: Scan the Straumann Variobase Abutment ppscan spray may be applied. ppif the software does not allow virtual blocking out of undercuts, these and the screw channel must be blocked out with wax before scanning. ppif the software allows the scan to be saved as a template, future blocking out is no longer required. The template can be imposed on the scan of the Variobase Abutment model via a matching process. Otherwise, the Variobase Abutment blocked out with wax can be kept for future scans. MODELING AND ORDERING Step 2: Modeling and ordering the ceramic coping The diameter of the screw channel is: RC = 2.3 mm NC = 2.2 mm WN = 2.7 mm RN = 2.7 mm NNC = 2.2 mm

8 STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR PROSTHETIC PROCEDURES ILLUSTRATED USING A STRAUMANN BONE LEVEL IMPLANT (RC) PRODUCT COMPLETION AT THE DENTAL LABORATORY AND FINAL INSERTION BY THE DENTIST: A) Screw-retained final restoration Step 3: Fabricating the crown Fabricate a screw-retained crown with a ceramic that is synchronized to the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of zirconium dioxide. ppall commercially available veneering ceramics that are intended for veneering of zirconium dioxide and suitable for its CTE values may be used. ppparticular attention must be given to an even layer thickness of the porcelain veneered on the abutment. ppfollow the instructions of the veneering manufacturer! Step 4: Bonding Fix the Variobase Abutment to the implant analog using a screw (hand-tight). Seal the screw channel with wax. ppit is not necessary to sandblast the Variobase Abutment. Apply the self-adhesive dental cement to the Variobase Abutment. Follow the cement/adhesive manufacturer s instructions. Bond the crown to the Variobase Abutment. ppimmediately remove excess cement from the abutment and polish the lower margin of the crown after the cement has dried. ppalways use a polishing aid to protect the abutment s prosthetic connection. ppdo not fire the abutment after bonding. 6

9 STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR PROSTHETIC PROCEDURES ILLUSTRATED USING A STRAUMANN BONE LEVEL IMPLANT (RC) Step : Using transfer aids To ensure correct transfer of the abutment position from the master cast to the patient, an individual index can be fabricated on the master cast using acrylic. The index is secured with support from the adjacent teeth. ppthe occlusal screw opening must not be covered with acrylic. Ensure that no acrylic gets into the interior of the abutment, otherwise the basal screw cannot be loosened. The final restoration is fixed on the master cast and delivered to the dental practice. Step 6: Preparation Remove the healing cap or temporary restoration. Unscrew the abutment from the implant analog. Clean and dry the interior of the implant and abutment thoroughly. ppalways ensure that surfaces of threads and screw heads are clean and that a new screw is used for the final restoration. ppvariobase Abutments can be steam sterilized (134 ºC, min.). Step 7: Final insertion Position the sterilized Variobase Abutment in the implant. Tighten the screw using the SCS Screwdriver together with the ratchet and 3 Ncm Torque Control Device. Seal the SCS screw channel using cotton and a suitable sealing compound (e.g. gutta-percha). This allows for later removal of the Variobase Abutment in case a crown replacement is required. 7

Step 4: Fabricating the crown Mount the sterilized Variobase Abutment on the implant analog. Use standard procedure to fabricate the cement-retained restoration. Veneer the structure.
