2 Type of Instruction Course Description: Course Prerequisite(s) Lecture/Lab The practical application of exposing, processing, and mounting diagnostically acceptable radiographs obtained by utilizing various radiographic techniques. PREREQUISITE(S): DNTA 1305 Academic Discipline/CTE Program Learning Outcomes Course Student Learning Outcomes (SLO): 4 to 7 Learning Objectives (Numbering system should be linked to SLO - e.g., 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc.) 1. Demonstrate Clinical Competency as a dental assistant. 2. All students will meet entry level skills as a dental assistant. 3. Demonstrate appropriate communication skills as required of a dental assistant. 4. Demonstrate appropriate ethical and professional behavior as required of a dental assistant. 1. Perform radiographic techniques in the clinical setting. 2. Produce diagnostically acceptable radiographs. Perform radiographic techniques in the clinical setting. 1. Describe common errors in technique and how these errors can be corrected to produce diagnostically acceptable radiographs. Other GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course the student will be able to: 1. demonstrate the occlusal technique of dental radiography. 2. demonstrate the panorex procedure. 3. name and describe special needs in radiography for surveying teeth and supporting structures of the edentulous patient and the child patient. 4. identify the Temporomandibular joint, and the radiographic techniques used to describe disturbances of the joint. 5. describe common errors in technique and how these errors can be corrected. 6. recognize imperfections on radiographs and describe what caused these imperfections to occur. 7. describe the ways in which computer generated radiographs can be used for diagnostic purposes. 8. identify normal anatomical landmarks on dental radiographs and some common pathological conditions.

No assessments selected for this outcome Lab: Students are only allowed in lab or clinic with direct faculty supervision. Students participating in lab/clinical activities are REQUIRED to be in full clinic attire. (ie Scrub uniform top and pants, along with an appropriate lab jacket and closed-toe shoes worn with hair pulled back). Hats, jeans, shorts, skirts, hoodies, flip-flops, sandals, and any other attire not identified as clinic attire are NOT APPROPRIATE due to potential safety hazards, contact with chemicals in the lab, and working with patients. Lab attendance is required: In order to receive credit for DNTA-1349 Radiology in the Clinic, the student may not miss more than two lab periods during the semester. You will be required to notify the instructor prior to the next class meeting if you foresee not being able to attend a class period. This courtesy is expected of students in an effort to cultivate the professionalism needed for success in a career in the dental industry. Lab material is cumulative and absences only put students even further behind. Absences from lab are strongly discouraged. Professional Policy: Students are expected to participate fully in all lab and clinical activities and to model professional behavior at all times. All students are considered mature enough to seek faculty assistance and to monitor their own progress in meeting course requirements. Students experiencing any problems throughout this
4 course are expected follow proper protocol and to communicate directly with their instructor in an attempt to resolve whatever difficulty arises. Discipline Statement: As your instructor and as a student in this course, it is our shared responsibility to develop and maintain a positive learning environment for everyone. I take this responsibility very seriously and will inform members of the class if their behavior makes it difficult for me to carry out this task. As a fellow learner, you are asked to respect the learning needs of your classmates and assist me achieve this critical goal. Children in the classroom Statement: You have beautiful children, but our class is not the place to bring your children. You and your classmates need to have all your energy focused on the course. Please make necessary arrangements beforehand for childcare in order to aid your success in this course. Electronics in the Classroom Statement: As a student active in the learning community of this course, it is your responsibility to be respectful of the learning atmosphere in your classroom. To show respect of your fellow students and instructor, If your cell phone, pager, or like device interrupts class, you ll be assessed a penalty equal to a single tardy, per offense. ALL CELL PHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF OR SILENCED DURING CLASS. NO NET SURFING OR TEXTING DURING CLASS. Portable laptops will not be permitted in the lab. Make-up Policy (Lecture): As a dedicated college student, it is your responsibility to complete your assignments on time. All lab assignments must be turned in by then end of the class period, and will be graded as such. The student will be expected to manage their time and turn in lab assignments in a timely manner. Make-up quizzes, or exams will NOT be given except in the case of a documented medical emergency or hospitalization. Make-up Policy (Lab): Should a student miss a lab period and miss a lab competency (ie Lab assignment) the student will be required to submit documentation substantiating the absence in order to approve a request for make-up of the missed competency. Once approved, the student will be given one week from the date of the absence to schedule an appointment with a Faculty member at their convenience to make-up the lab assignment, otherwise the grade will automatically convert into a grade of F. Grades for lab makeups may be subject to a 10 point penalty.
5 Communication Statement: As mentioned previously, since I am not on campus daily the majority of our communication will occur via . If you are not in the habit of checking your regularly (at least once daily) you are advised to do so now in order to keep up with this course. You will be held responsible for any and all communication delivered electronically. Please make sure to check your HCC student regularly in order to ensure that you receive communication regarding this course. Failure to do any of the above could result in missing out on an important message, deadline, or being ill-prepared for class and therefore jeopardizing your overall grade. As your Instructor, it is my responsibility to: Provide the grading scale and detailed grading formula explaining how student grades are to be derived Facilitate an effective learning environment through class activities, discussions, and lectures Description of any special projects or assignments Inform students of policies such as attendance, withdrawal, tardiness and make-up Provide the course outline and class calendar which will include a description of any special projects or assignments Arrange to meet with individual students before and after class as required To be successful in this class, it is the student s responsibility to: Attend class and participate in class discussions and activities Read the assigned chapters and take the assigned online quizzes before class. Complete the required assignments and exams as indicated on the schedule: Ask the instructor for help as soon as you realize you are having difficulty. Take notes during class and place a question mark by anything you do not understand. Keep copies of all paperwork, including this syllabus, handouts and all assignments Complete the Competency Exam (ie Lab Final) with a minimum score of 85% or higher Program/Discipli ne Requirements: If Student must expose a minumum number of radiographs on a mannequin. Student must expose a minimum number of radiographs on patients. Student must find at least 4 patients to assist them with radiographs

The student must re-enroll to receive credit. COM (Completed) is given in non-credit and continuing education courses. To compute grade point average (GPA), divide the total grade points by the total number of semester hours attempted. The grades "IP," "COM" and "I" do not affect GPA. See "Health Science Program/Discipline Requirements" for grading scale. Instructor Grading Criteria The final grade for this course will be calculated according to the total number of points accumulated for participating in classroom and laboratory activities. Quizzes, exams and competencies will be conducted to determine how successful you are at achieving the course learning outcomes (mastery of course content and skills) outlined in the syllabus. If you find you are not mastering the material and skills, you are encouraged to reflect on how you study and prepare for each class. Your instructor welcomes a dialogue on what you discover and may be able to assist you in finding resources on campus that will improve your performance. * All students must make 70 or better to successfully complete this course and successfully pass. Students must pass the laboratory portion with a 70 or above in order to pass this course. The laboratory portion of this course (a) a 70 or above AND (b) 85% proficiency on the lab competency final exam The Dental Assisting Program requires a minimum of a 2.0 to pass any course, therefore, any grade below a 70 is an F.
