6 What is Mental Health? Mental health is a state of well being in which the individual realises his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully and is able to make a contribution to his or her own community. (World Health Organisation)

7 What is Mental Ill Health? Mental ill health is on a wide spectrum, from the worries and grief we all experience as part of everyday life to the most bleak, suicidal depression or complete loss of touch with everyday reality.

8 The Mental Health Continuum maximum mental wellbeing no absolutes the continuum... Serious mental illness a person with a diagnosis of a serious illness but who copes well and has positive mental wellbeing a person with no illness or disorder and positive mental wellbeing No mental illness symptoms a person with a diagnosis of a serious mental health condition and who has poor wellbeing a person with no diagnosis but who has poor mental wellbeing minimal mental wellbeing (Adapted from Mental Health Promotion: Paradigms and Practice K Tudor 1996)

13 Common mental health conditions Depression Can be mild, moderate or severe Symptoms include feelings of deep sadness that can last weeks, months, years Other symptoms are disturbed sleep, poor/increased appetite, reduced concentration, feelings of guilt/shame Feelings are serious enough to interfere with daily life Motivation can be affected Some people may experience suicidal thoughts
