AGENDA for 01/10/14 AGENDA: : Complications of Diabetes Researching Complications Human Body Graphic Organizer OBJECTIVES: 1. Explore the impact that Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes can have on human body systems HOMEWORK: Due Mon, Activity Packet Quiz on 2.3 (2.3.1 to 2.3.3) on Tues, 01-14
Essential Questions for How do the terms hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia relate to diabetes? 3. What might happen to cells that are exposed to high concentrations of sugar? 4. How do Type I and Type II diabetes differ? 5. What are the current treatments for Type I and Type II diabetes? 6. What is the importance of checking blood sugar levels for a diabetic? 7. How can an insulin pump help a diabetic?
2.3 Key Terms Hemoglobin A1c A test that measures the level of hemoglobin A1c in the blood as a means of determining the average blood sugar concentrations for the preceding two to three months. Hyperglycemia Hypertonic Hypoglycemia Hypotonic Isotonic Osmosis An excess of sugar in the blood. In comparing two solutions, referring to the one with a greater solute concentration. Abnormal decrease of sugar in the blood. In comparing two solutions, referring to the one with a lower solute concentration. Having the same solute concentration as another solution. The movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. Solute Solution Solvent A substance that is dissolved in a solution. A liquid that is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances. The dissolving agent of a solution. Water is the most versatile solvent known.
Essential Questions for What are potential short and long term complications of diabetes?
Activity Objectives Visualize the impact diabetes has on the human body on a graphic organizer 2. Use information about complications to further analyze details of Anna s autopsy report
Conclusion Question 1. Explain how diabetes can affect two other human body systems. 2. Explain why people with poorly controlled diabetes are at risk for amputation. 3. There are both short term and long term complications of diabetes. Describe an example below for each category. 4. Explain how Anna s diet differed on August 11 and on August 12. Which was more appropriate for a diabetic? 5. Describe at least two potential scenarios where Anna s diabetes contributed to her death. Due Mon, 01-13
