10 I am an ophthalmologist with 8 years of clinical experience and 7 years of research experience. I have a strong research background in retinal inflammatory diseases, especially in uveitis based in Japan. After graduating medical school in Japan, I joined department of ophthalmology in Tokyo Medical University in 2003 and started the PhD program. My research goal in graduate school was to identify novel retinal autoantigens in uveitis using a proteomics approach. Through this project, I learned many basic experimental techniques in molecular biology, as well as techniques for ophthalmology research. I found several retinal autoantigens in human patients with uvetis and in an animal model of autoimmune uveitis, which became my thesis. After I received PhD in 2007, I continued my training as a clinical ophthalmologist at Tokyo Medical University, and majored uveitis as a specialty. I engaged in outpatient as well as surgery and inpatient care. In the last two years of my clinical work, I served as a chief of doctors consisting of 4-5 members. During my practice in Japan, I continued research on retinal inflammation and received three research grants from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, which is equivalent to NIH in the US. I published 41 scientific papers, 11 of which as first author. My clinical experience with patients inspired me to focus on research in ocular inflammation. In 2014, I joined Dr. Kip M Connor s lab at Massachusetts Eye & Ear, and began several projects surrounding retinal microglia, which are the retina s resident immune cells. Currently, my research focuses on the role for microglia in retinal inflammatory diseases, including uveitis and retinal detachment. I am already a co-author in three scientific papers published from Connor lab, and now have an accepted first-author manuscript that will be published in PNAS. My ultimate career goal is to become a leading clinician scientist by making lasting contributions to elucidating the mechanisms of ocular inflammation. 10
