5 Stay Connected Snow Shoveling: Be Careful! If you re a heart patient of even if you suffer from mild hypertension, be careful. Every year people die shoveling snow. Snow shoveling is a very difficult exercise, even for a physically fit person. If you re out of shape, or our heart isn t completely healthy, it can be like climbing a mountain. Your body must push, lift, turn and throw. If you shovel at the rate of ten throws per minute, you re expending as much energy as if you were playing a match of singles tennis. For a young person in good shape, that s no problem. Otherwise, your heart may choke for oxygen. The gap between oxygen you heart needs and what it gets is called, myocardial ischemia which can cause angina. If the ischemia is severe enough, it can trigger a heart attack. With all of these dangers, what should you do? First, if you have heart disease even of a mild sort consult with your doctor before you undertake any snow shoveling. Get this okay. If the doctor tells you not to shovel snow, by all means avoid the task: Get another family member, or hire some local school children to do the work. To find out more information: Contact your health care provider or visit EXERCISE & THE HEART Article Submitted by Algoma Community Wellness Center Member: Mike Romdenne If you must shovel snow the old-fashioned way, make sure you: Pace yourself. Start out gradually to avoid sudden strain and exertion. Take frequent breaks, especially if you become tired. Don t try to take too much snow in each shovelful; lift reasonable amounts. Use your legs, as well as your arms, in lifting the snow. Make sure you don t eat heavily, smoke, or drink alcohol before or just after you shovel snow. Try not to work when it s windy. The wind-chill factor may be much lower than your thermometer indicates. Dress warmly in several light layers, instead of just one heavy layer. This will let you take off or put on clothing as your body temperature changes. Be careful not to become overheated that also puts a strain on your cardiovascular system. And wear a hat. Wear a cold weather mask or scarf to warm the cold air a little before you breathe it into your lungs.
