18 What is Physical Literacy (PL)? Holistic understanding of the underpinnings of human movement. Physical literacy is not new, but only recently gained a high profile.

24 Why is Physical Literacy Important? Activity levels among Canadian youth Physical activity and sport participation are related to improved health, and mental health. at least quality sport experiences are. Movement competencies are only weakly associated with physical activity. In contrast PL shows a stronger relation: Movement competencies: r = ~.10 PL: r = ~.60

25 Why is Physical Literacy Important? Movement competencies might be more important for specific activities than physical activity. For example, some youth will develop a specific skill, such as throwing, and engage in activities that involve throwing, while avoiding activities such as running or jumping. Sport retention: specific sport and across sports

26 Are Canadian Youth Physically Literate? Empirical studies of PL are still few, but some signs are concerning:

27 Gender and Physical Literacy Females tend to score lower on measures of physical literacy than males. This gender gap is seen in late childhood and early teen years. However, a physical literacy program that targets confidence, motivation, and gender stereotypes can address this gap.

28 What does this mean for Youth Sport Participation? Organized activities are important for the development of movement competencies and other domains of physical literacy. Ideally, youth would be exposed to programs through there development that follow the LTAD. Youth who enter your programs might not have well rounded skills or PL. Even when youth do follow LTAD pathways, practicing broader movement competencies is important for maintaining and further developing PL.

29 What can I do to Improve Physical Literacy? Provide opportunities for both breadth and depth of movement activities. These experiences will be helpful in improving movement competencies, and rounding out confidence. Support youth in developing their PL knowledge with reflection on their practices. For example, the impact of a good warm-up on their practice.

53 The Problem Injuries in soccer (ages 11-18) More emergency room visits than any other sport More than 10% of all sports injuries Knees and ankles Serious and painful Long recovery period Risk of long-term conditions (e.g., osteoarthritis) Psychological effects (e.g., loss of confidence, leave the sport)

54 The Problem (con t) ACL Young female soccer players are at 4-6 times greater risk of ACL injury than their male counterparts (Filipa et al., 2010; Hewett et al., 2010) Most ACL ruptures occur during non-contact cutting manoeuvres, acceleration/deceleration on a single support limb (67% in men and almost 90% in women) (Spindler and Wright., 2008)

55 ACL INJURIES AND GENDER In non-contact ACL ruptures: females are more than twice as likely to injure the ACL of their non-dominant side as their dominant side 2-3 times more likely to injure their non-dominant side ACL than are males (Brophy et al., 2010) Males show no significant relationship between lower limb dominance and ACL injury in non-contact incidents. FEMALES ARE MORE ASYMMETRICAL

56 MP and ACL Injury MP works both right and left limbs in basic cutting and landing maneuvers. MP prepares for movement at speed MP also prepares for movement under pressure, and even in contact settings. MP works on both acceleration and deceleration elements of movement

57 Movement Preparation Study: ACL injury The ACL injury rates (in group receiving Movt Prep) were less than half (2.1%) of the rates (7.5%) in control without Movt Prep, and lower than published rates (5%). (P<0.05) :
