5 smn.rg GENERAL RULES OF COMPETITION FOR SPECIAL OLYMICS MINNESOTA GYMNASTICS All Arund vs. Event Specialist Gymnast: All-Arund: male and female gymnasts are required t cmpete in all events at the same level t qualify fr All-Arund. Levels: Event Specialist: cmpeting in ne, tw r mre events but nt all events at the same level. Specialists must be n the same level at wrld games, but may cmpete in tw different levels with ne level difference between the tw levels at state events. There are seven levels f cmpetitin ffered: Level A: Cmpulsry Rutines fr gymnasts wh have ambulatry prblems Level B: Cmpulsry Rutines fr gymnasts wh are unable t perfrm level I rutines Level C: Cmpulsry Rutines perfrmed standing fr lwer level athletes. Rhythmic Gymnastics nly. Level 1: Beginner Cmpulsry rutines Level 2: Intermediate Cmpulsry rutines Level 3: Advanced Rutines using cmpulsry skills made int wn rutines with wn cnnectins Level 4: Optinal rutines Level 4 in Rhythmic Gymnastics is fr athletes that have skills mre advanced than Level 3 skills. Level 4 Artistic Gymnastics are ptinal rutines fr athletes perfrming skills mre advanced then Level 3. Fr all levels: Caches will determine the cmpetitin level fr their athletes. Athletes must be able t safely perfrm all the skills in that level. All-Arund the athlete must cmpete at the same level in all events. If the athlete entered in All-Arund receives a n scre in any ne f the events they are nt eligible fr an award in All-Arund. The level that a gymnast is registered fr and cmpetes in at an area cmpetitin will be the level they are registered fr at the state cmpetitin. 6 smn.rg PROVIDE A SAFE ENVIRONMENT Establish clear rules fr behavir at yur first practice and enfrce them. Keep yur hands t yurself. Listen t the cach. When yu hear the cach stp, lk and listen. Ask permissin befre leaving the gym t g anywhere. Gymnasts shuld nt be in the gym r n equipment withut prper supervisin. Make sure gymnasts bring water t every practice r prvide a water funtain, especially in htter climates. Have a first aid kit in the building; restck supplies as necessary. Train all gymnasts and caches n emergency prcedures. Discuss safety in the gym as well as utside the gym. Rules such as: nt walk in frm f dismunt area; careful arund mats f different heights, lk befre walking etc. Caches must be under the uneven bars, rings, high bar, and high beam prepared t spt, as well as in all levels f vaulting and parallel bars, befre an athlete may cmpete in these events. The cach must remain there during the rutine. Cnsistent with the Special Olympics philsphy that the mvement is athlete-centered, the safety f athletes is the primary cncern when establishing sprts rules. The establishment f internatinal guidelines fr Special Olympics gymnastics cmpulsry and ptinal rutines will ensure that the athletes fllw a prper prgressin f instructin in gymnastics skills. This will reduce the incidence f injuries. Athletes wh safely perfrm all skills in a specific level f cmpulsry rutines shuld cmpete at that level. Cmpetitin in ptinal rutines has been limited t advanced-level gymnasts nly. Learning the prper prgressins f skill instructin and crrect sptting techniques is the respnsibility f the gymnastics cach. Special Olympics cmmends thse natinal/state Prgrams in which certified gymnastics instructrs use the prper prgressin fr teaching advanced gymnastics skills which is set frth in the Gymnastic Caching Guide, these rules and elsewhere. Hwever, many vlunteers begin caching with limited gymnastics expertise. These vlunteers shuld start by teaching nly the cmpulsry Levels A, B, C & Level 1 rutines. Thse skills that are included in the mre advanced levels shuld be taught by caches with at least tw years f general gymnastics caching experience. It is recmmended that caches f advanced Levels 3 & 4 gymnasts have additinal training in gymnastics frm what Special Olympics ffers at this time. N athletes may participate in Artistic Gymnastics if they have Atlant-axial subluxatin. Female athletes wh have tested psitive fr Atlant-axial subluxatin may participate in rhythmic gymnastics. If these athletes elect t d an ptinal rutine, they may nt perfrm pre-acrbatic r acrbatic mves. If they d, the rutine is vid and the gymnast will be disqualified. 6

7 smn.rg PROVIDE A SAFE ENVIRONMENT CONTINUED Special Olympics Safety Psitin: Regardless f hw much safety is prvided, caches shuld nt entice r encurage their athletes t perfrm skills that are beynd their reasnable ability r skills that are beynd the caches ability t teach. Special Olympics recmmends that all gymnastics caches becme safety certified in accrdance with the plicy endrsed by the apprpriate Natinal Gverning Bdy. Special Olympics cncurs with the fllwing respnsibility statement: Even thugh gymnastics safety is everyne s respnsibility, the instructr r cach must bear much f it, including the respnsibility t see that thers d their share: the parents, the dctr and the athletes. Preventin and remediatin are majr respnsibilities in a brad umbrella-type prgram under which many ther pints must be included: the envirnment, the prescribed learning prgressin and the physical preparedness f the athlete. These are the areas where the instructr/cach bears much f the mral and legal respnsibility. It is nt enugh t warn and infrm; all cncerned must have an appreciatin and understanding f the risk in every vigrus gymnastics activity. As written in the cmpulsry rutines, caches must be under the uneven bars, rings, high bar, and high beam prepared t spt, as well as in all levels f vaulting and parallel bars, befre. If the cach des nt remain in a sptting psitin frm start t end, the fllwing deductins will ccur: 1.) Gymnast will nt be judged if the cach is nt in a psitin t spt. He/she will be asked t dismunt immediately. 2.) Judge will call the cach t be there. A 0.3 deductin will be taken fr undisciplined behavir. 3.) Assuming that the cach returns t the sptting psitin, the gymnast will be judged frm that pint. All skills perfrmed prir t that will be cnsidered as mitted parts and deductins taken. 4.) If the gymnast decides t start ver, he/she may. If the gymnast leaves the apparatus r the cach tuches the gymnast in rder t start ver, a 1.0 deductin will be taken in additin t the 0.3 fr delay f meet. 5.) If the cach des nt return t a sptting psitin and the gymnast cmpletes his/ her rutine, the gymnast will receive a zer fr a scre. 7

Artistic Gymnastics Sprts Rules Versin: March 2014 rulebk: FINAL-March2014.pdf As well as nline in vide frmat: Order f Events: Wmen s Artistic cmpetitin and levels A & B will rtate in Olympic rder: Vault, Uneven Bars, Balance Beam, and Flr Exercise. Men s Artistic Cmpetitin will rtate in Olympic rder: Flr Exercise, Pmmel Hrse, Still Rings, Vault, Parallel Bars, and Hrizntal Bar. Gymnasts may be scheduled t start the meet n any event, but must cntinue their rtatin in Olympic rder. Mdificatins: Attire: Please see the Special Olympics, Inc. Artistic Gymnastics Sprts Rules Versin: March 2014 rulebk fr all mdificatins fr athletes with hearing and visin impairments; as well as athletes using canes r walkers (Pages 2-3). Men: Tank tps (Unitard) and lng gymnastic pants r gymnastic shrts depending n the event. T Shirts that are tucked in may replace the tank tp. Gymnasts may cmpete in gymnastics slippers, r bare feet. Grips (fr bars) are ptinal. Dwel Grips fr advanced Gymnast nly. Wmen: lng-sleeved, shrt sleeved r sleeveless letard, with ptinal matching shrts. Gymnasts may have either bare feet r wear gymnastic slippers. Bare legs r leg cvering f the same clr as the letard r flesh clred tights with bare feet are permitted. Grips (fr bars) are ptinal. 9 smn.rg RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS Special Olympics Minnesta is utilizing the Special Olympics, Inc. Rhythmic Cmpulsry Rutines. All rutines are available in the Special Olympics Sprts Rules, Gymnastics-Rhythmic Versin: January 2016 rulebk: As well as nline in vide frmat: Attire: Wrk ut: Letard which may be wrn with ftless tights, shrts, r skirts. Rhythmic half-slippers, bare feet r scks Cmpetitin: Gymnasts shuld wear a letard r unitard, any clr. Lng tights dwn t the ankle may be wrn. Skirted letards, with the skirt n lnger than upper thigh r matching shrts, are acceptable. Lng tights (dwn t the ankle) may be wrn under the letard. Letards may be with r withut sleeves, but dance letards with narrw straps are nt allwed and a lw cut back are nt allwed. The cut f the letard at the tp f the legs must nt g beynd the fld f the crtch (maximum). Any decratin added t the letard, either lse r stuck t the garment (flwers, ribbns, etc.) must adhere t the letard. Letards must be nn-transparent material. Lace r ther sheer fabric shuld be lined in all the area f the trunk. Bare feet, gymnastics slippers, r rhythmic half-slippers (recmmended) are acceptable. Hairstyles shuld be neat. Underwear shuld nt shw. Hair away frm face and shuld be tied up. N jewelry. Small earrings are ptinal. Apparatus: The size f the apparatus can range frm child size t senir equipment, based n the gymnast s size and skill level. Equipment shuld be clr crdinated with the athlete s letard. Equipment will be checked prir t cmpetitin, as well as during cmpetitin, as the gymnast leaves the flr after each rutine. If the apparatus des nt meet specificatin, a deductin f 0.3 will be taken frm the scre n that event. Fr further specificatins f each apparatus please see pages 3-4 f the Special Olympics Sprts Rules, Gymnastics- Rhythmic Versin: January 2016 Rules f Cmpetitin: 1. Female gymnasts may cmpete in levels I-IV. Levels A, B and C are mixed gender. 2. Unified sprts Rhythmic Gymnastics Events: a. All rutines and regulatins apply equally t athletes and partners. b. Unified cmpetitin is nly in the grup events. There must be an equal number f athletes and partners in each grup (fr a 4 persn grup, 2 athletes and 2 partners, etc.) 3. Level A and B rutines have been written fr athletes wh are unable t stand n their wn. 4. Level C rutines have been written fr athletes f lwer ability level wh can stand n their wn. 5. Order f cmpletin fr rhythmic gymnastics is rpe, hp, ball, clubs, ribbn. 6. Awarding f medals a. Medals are awarded fr each event and fr All-Arund. b. Gymnasts may receive a maximum f five medals. 10 smn.rg JUDGING General Judging: One t fur judges can be used n each panel fr each event. When a panel cnsists f tw r three judges, all scres will be averaged t determine the scre fr that panel. When fur judges cmprise a panel, the high and lw scres will be eliminated, and the remaining scres will be averaged. a. The judges place themselves arund the event mat r apparatus and may cnsult amng themselves if directed t d s by the head judge. (If the judges scres are nt in range, there is a cnsultatin.) The final average scre is flashed. b. Due t the imprtance f the divisining prcess and in fairness t all, the fllwing rule will be in effect nce the cmpetitin begins: Judges are nt allwed t talk with caches, parents r athletes cncerning a gymnast s rutine. This rule applies n and ff the flr f cmpetitin. If such cmmunicatins ccur, remval f the judge will be recmmended t the Games Cmmittee. c. Each judge is respnsible t judge the entire rutine and determine the scre based n 10.0 pints. The ut-f-range guidelines when averaging scres are as fllw: d. Neutral deductins are taken ff the final scre by the head judge n the event. There is a fur pint (4.00) maximum t these deductins. e. Caching assist: Caches must be visible t the judges when assisting the gymnast frm the sideline, as deductins are applied (nte deductins belw). Caches are encuraged t train the students t memrize their rutines as best as pssible. f. Caches may nt speak directly with a judge at any pint during the cmpetitin. If there are any cncerns, please speak directly with event management. A cach may be asked t leave the cmpetitin if this rule is nt fllwed Examples include: 1.) Imprper attire ) Imprper equipment and use f aids * ) Undisciplined r unsprtsmanlike behavir 0.30 each 4.) Failure t present t judges befre r after 0.30 each 5.) 11 smn.rg SCORING 1.) Executin deductins are applied t each individual element. Specific deductins are in additin t general deductins. Specific deductins are: a. Small errrs: 0.10 (Includes bent arms, knees, leg separatin, lss f balance, wrng hand placement, etc.) b. Medium errrs: 0.30 (Includes the same as small errrs but dne t a greater extent) c. Large errrs: 0.40 (Includes excessive r extreme bending f arms and/r knees, leg separatin, r lss f balance) d. Very large errrs: 0.50 e. Falls 0.50 (Includes falls n and ff the apparatus) f. Rhythm deductins Unwanted stps Pr rhythm thrughut the rutine 2.) Amplitude deductins are taken ff each individual element using the abve executin guidelines. Amplitude includes the range f mtin and hw large r cmpressed the skill shwn is cmpared t the ultimate. Rutine Reversal: An entire rutine may be reversed withut deductins, and a single element may be reversed withut deductins as lng as it des nt change the flr pattern. Optinal Rutines: In evaluating each ptinal rutine, the judge gives a scre fr difficulty, executin/presentatin, cmbinatin and bnus/additive value f the rutine based upn the Federatin Internatinale de Gymnastique (FIG) rules fr a Deductins are taken based n missing skills accrding t the skills required fr each level and executin errrs as nted afre hand. 11
