DEADLINES D-5 must be submitted t the UGS at least 3 WEEKS BEFORE the date f the defense r by the UGS deadline (whichever date is the earliest). The defense annuncement must cnfrm t the UGS frmat, and bth a hard cpy and an electrnic versin must be submitted t ensure full prcessing f yur defense request. Ultimately, it is the student's respnsibility t make sure frms are received by the University Graduate Schl n time and that all deadlines are met. 2. CONTINUOUS ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS Dctral candidates are required t be enrlled in at least 3 dissertatin credit hurs in the term in which they submit D-5. The final examinatin cmmittee will cnsist f all members f the dissertatin cmmittee and any ther members f the Graduate Faculty as may be appinted by the Dean f the UGS. Type the names f the cmmittee members and btain their riginal signatures. If ne f the cmmittee members is unavailable t sign, he/she can give the Department Chair written authrizatin t sign n his/her behalf. It is expected that all cmmittee members will be present fr the dissertatin defense. It is pssible fr ne cmmittee member t attend via vide cnference r telecnference technlgy, hwever prir apprval must be btained frm the UGS thrugh an electrnic Petitin fr Exceptin t Graduate Requirements. Please cntact yur academic unit t initiate this prcess. Cmplete checklist and attach dcumentatin as needed. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION DISSERTATION DEFENSE ANNOUNCEMENT The annuncement shuld be prepared in accrdance with the template available n the next page and at: It shuld include the date, time, and venue and shuld be n lnger than ne page. The abstract, part f the annuncement, shuld be written in a schlarly style apprpriate t the discipline. AFTER APPROVAL OF YOUR DEFENSE Dissertatin hard cpy Yu will receive an instructing yu t pick up yur hard cpy dissertatin draft frm the UGS ffice. This will als include cnfirmatin that yur defense was apprved. Dissertatin electrnic cpy After the frmatting review f the electrnic versin f yur dissertatin has been cmpleted, yu will receive feedback regarding frmatting edits via . This will cntain a Cmmn Errr Checklist with a list f frmatting edits that must be crrected. Furthermre, yu will receive a cpy f yur electrnic dissertatin file with the frmatting edits marked thrughut yur dcument. If yur GPA is belw 3.0, see yur academic advisr in rder t make a plan t raise yur GPA abve 3.0.; yu cannt graduate with a GPA belw 3.0. 3 Flrida Internatinal University University Graduate Schl UNIVERSITY GRADUATE SCHOOL BULLETIN ANNOUNCEMENT Dctral Dissertatin Defense Abstract The Relatinship f Thymulin Activity, Immune Parameters f HIV Disease Prgressin and Substance Use in a Chrt f HIV Serpsitive Alchl and Drug Users by Carlin Rafie Zinc is essential fr the activity f thymulin, a thymic hrmne invlved in T-lymphcyte differentiatin and activatin. Zinc deficiency is widespread in ppulatins with HIV infectin, and HIV+ drug users are particularly susceptible t zinc deficiency and immune suppressin. This dissertatin explred the relatinship f zinc-bund active thymulin t plasma zinc, CD4+ and CD8+ cell cunt, the CD4+/CD8+ rati, and drug use in HIV-infected drug users. Zinc-bund active thymulin was assessed in plasma f HIV+ drug users wh were participating in a 30 mnth zinc supplementatin trial. Plasma frm 80 participants at the 12 mnth visit, and 40 f these same participants, randmly selected, at the baseline visit were assessed fr zinc-bund active thymulin levels using a mdificatin f the rsette inhibitin assay. Thymulin activity was directly assciated with CD4+ cell cunt (β =0.127, p = 0.002) and inversely assciated with ccaine use (β = , p = 0.026; R 2 = 0.188, p = 0.019) independent f HIV viral lad, age, gender and antiretrviral use. An increase in thymulin activity was 1.4 times mre likely when the CD4+ cell cunt increased (OR = 1.402, 95%CI: ), independent f change in viral lad, antiretrviral use, and age. Participants wh used ccaine cnsistently, were 7.6 times less likely t have an increase in thymulin activity (OR = 0.133, 95%CI: ). There was a direct crrelatin between change in plasma zinc and change in zinc-bund active thymulin (r = 0.243, p = 0.13). Analysis f CD4+ cell cunt decline in 222 participants in the zinc supplementatin trial acrss the 30 mnths shwed that bth crack ccaine use and heavy alchl use accelerated CD4+ cell cunt decline. Thymulin activity is directly assciated with HIV disease prgressin, measured by CD4+ cell cunt, and is depressed with ccaine use independent f antiretrviral use and HIV viral lad. Ccaine and heavy alchl accelerate CD4+ cell cunt decline. The effect f ccaine n thymic utput requires further evaluatin as a mechanism fr the assciatin f ccaine use with faster HIV disease prgressin.
