1 - 1 - THE SHARKS ACADEMY INFORMATION PACK The Sharks Academy is a world-class rugby academy which is accredited by SA Rugby and backed by a strategic partnership with the Sharks, arguably the most professional rugby union in South Africa. The Sharks Academy offers a full-time, three-year course designed for young people with a passion for rugby and a desire to pursue a career in the sport. The success of The Sharks Academy over recent years can be accredited to the professional environment that has been created for our rugby students, including the expertise of our coaches, our partnership with the Sharks, and our focus on providing every individual with the necessary skills and attributes to perform at his optimum. The results have seen many extremely talented young players graduate from the Academy into the professional rugby arena. Top young rugby players who are passionate about rugby and are interesting in pursuing a career in the sport can apply, with the main focus being predominantly school-leavers.

2 - 2 - HISTORY The Sharks Academy Referee program was started in 2009 by Burton Hufkie (KZNRU Training and Education Manager) and is coordinated by Blake Beattie. The aim of the Referee program is to assist young aspiring referees to develop and grow to the best of their ability whilst studying at the Sharks Academy. 9 - 9 - Option 2: Basic Referee Programme plus IIE Bachelor of Commerce Degree This BCom is aimed at students who are keen to study a broad-based commerce degree that can potential branch out in the second year to 4 separate specialisations. This degree has been extended over a minimum of 4 years to accommodate the Sharks Academy timetable; providing you with the opportunity to balance your rugby and academics and succeed in both arenas. 2 of these years are conducted at Growthpoint Kings Park and the other 2 years and Varsity College Durban North Campus. Repeat modules If you have failed any modules you will NOT be allowed to repeat any modules at the Sharks Academy. This is due to timetable restrictions. You will be able to repeat any failed modules at Varsity College after your two years at the Sharks Academy. You may only register for a maximum of 6 modules at the Academy Please note the following alternative offerings available branching off from the B.Comm 1 Programme: 1.BCOM: Bachelor of Commerce with a Choice of 3 Core disciplines: Marketing Management / Strategic Management / Financial Management 2.BCOM Economics: Bachelor of Commerce in Economics 3.BCOM Law: Bachelor of Commerce in Law

10 Option 3: Basic Referee Programme plus National Diploma in Fitness This National Diploma in Fitness, which is done through eta College, is a three-year course and is structured in such a way that the student can develop both on the rugby and academic front. The lectures are conducted at The Sharks Academy. In the first year, you will complete a Higher Certificate (HC), in the second year an Advanced Certificate and finally in the third year a Diploma. The HC qualifies you to work in the fitness industry as a personal trainer. All eta fitness qualifications are recognised by the Registrar of Exercise Professionals SA (REPSSA), linking internationally and enabling you as an eta graduate to work where the REPS operates, including Europe, UK, Australia, New Zealand, USA and South Africa. During this learning programme, you will be exposed to the theories of exercise science, the applied knowledge of exercise programming with its range of methods and techniques, and the skills of leading and instructing individuals or groups through a range of exercise training sessions. To gain confidence while you are learning, you will complete a range of practical hours through work-based learning experience. Once you have graduated you can work as a personal trainer in an established fitness facility; alternatively, you can run your own practice, taking on a range of private clients. The minimum recommended requirement for admission is the National Senior Certificate (NSC), elementary achievement (30-39%). Recommended: Minimum of 40% in English. Modules Covered: Kinesiology Anatomy and Bio-Mechanics: Learn about the anatomical structures of the human body as well as their relationship to each other. Describing the skeletal and muscular structures and explaining their movements. Sport and Exercise Physiology: This module covers the physiological functions of the associated structures of the human body. You will learn how physiological systems work in relation to exercise and sport and the physiological process that govern the different body systems. Biomechanics and Training Methods: The concept of biomechanics, and how it relates to human movement, learning about the physical laws of movement in relation to the execution of a given movement, skill or training technique. Screening, Assessment and Programme Design Screening: Learn how to conduct a screening process that identifies a client s readiness to participate in physical activity. You will also learn about the scope of practice of a personal trainer, and who you are able to train.

11 Assessment and Fitness Testing: Learn procedures that are scientifically validated so that you can carry out sub-maximal tests and interpret results, based on scientifically accepted norms. Nutrition Principles: This module covers the principles of nutrition with practical ways to identify a client s diet and provide educated recommendations, based on current scientific principles of healthy eating. Designing Exercise Programmes: Learn to design exercise programmes based on current fitness levels and goals. Ensuring sound, technically correct with the principles of progression and modification. Wellness: This module deals with the concepts of wellness and how to practically apply wellness practices to fitness programmes. Motivation and Communication: Understand theories of motivation, goalsetting and how to help clients with this knowledge. Leading and Instructing Individuals or Groups Instructing individual and group exercise sessions: Identify key aspects of teaching exercise, class planning and how to instruct safe and effective exercise sessions. Electives (Instructing aerobics, step and tone class, Instruct Indoor cycling classes, Instructing Pilates basic-mat class, instructing yoga level one classes): In choosing one of these electives, you learn how to plan and conduct your chosen mode of exercise. Health and Safety Safety and risk management: Plan, manage and implement a risk management strategy in the workplace. Learn the immediate actions required in the event of injuries. Special needs and disabilities: Understand criteria involved in training a client with special needs or a disability; how to include, assist and support clients with disabilities, adapting exercise and the environment. HIV and AIDS: This module deals with issues surrounding HIV and AIDS, giving insight into the complexities of training individuals with HIV and AIDS. Business Management Entrepreneurship and Business Management: Learn the fundamentals of business management in the context of running a small private business. Fitness Facility Management: Focus on risk management plans based on current practice, which will give you an understanding of the rigour involved in operating and managing your own fitness facility. Workplace Communication: Identify the most appropriate method of communication within the work environment.

12 Option 4: Basic Referee Programme plus National Diploma in Sport, Recreation & Fitness Management This National Diploma in Sport, Recreation & Fitness Management, which is done through eta College, is a three-year course and is structured in such a way that the student can develop both on the rugby and academic front. The lectures are conducted at The Sharks Academy. In the first year, you will complete a Higher Certificate (HC), in the second year an Advanced Certificate and finally in the third year a Diploma. This HC qualifies you to work in the field of sport, sport management and sport administration. As a graduate, you will be able to work in schools, in sport clubs or in private institutions; in a range of areas which include but are not limited to sport events, sports, recreation and fitness facility management, single and/or multisport clubs, sport team management and community based sport development and mass participation programmes. During this learning programme, you learn about the principles of good governance in sport organisations to support operational sustainability; how to plan, coordinate, and ensure safety in the implementation of sport tournaments and/or events; business, finance management and operations in a sport organisation; social development programmes through sport and how to promote athletes and manage media. To gain confidence while they are learning, students complete a range of practical hours through work-based learning. Modules Covered: Business Management of Sport, Recreation and Fitness: Sport, Recreation and Fitness Business Organisations: Get to understand the principles of business and financial management as well as marketing and its relationship to sport, recreation and fitness. Learn how to write marketing strategies, understand business strategies and how to operate a business. Sport, Recreation and Fitness Facilities: Learn how to apply financial strategies and planning different sport environments. The module includes budgeting, management of funds and revenue strategies and the application of good governance. Event and Project Management of Sport, Recreation and Fitness: Events and Tournaments for Sport, Recreation and Fitness: Always an exciting industry to be in; this module will teach you how to plan, implement and manage a range of small sport events, manage volunteers and risk. Mass Participation Programmes: Learn about the principles of mass participation, different sport activities and how to activate groups and communities into sport. Team management and Touring Logistics: Understand the logistics and management of sport tours as well as the principles of sport tourism and strategies.

14 - 4 - Sport Sociology: Introduction to Sport Sociology: This is an introductory module that explains how sport interacts with society. You will get an overview of sport sociology, social interaction and sport, as well as social issues and the effect on sport. You can apply this knowledge to sport and recreation studies, human resource management, sport development programmes and management of sport. Sport Informatics: Introduction to Sport Informatics: Sport informatics provides you with the skills to operate a PC and relevant software packages. You will gain an understanding of the management of information and how sport statistics are incorporated into a variety of environments to enhance the understanding of sport, monitor the development of sport and increase participation in sport. 15 Option 5: Basic Referee Programme plus Higher Certificate in Business Principles and Practice This Business Principles and Practice Certificate Course, which is done through Varsity College is a two-year course and is structured in such a way that the student can develop both on the rugby and academic front. 16 Option 6: Basic Referee Programme plus Higher Certificate in Sports Science and Management This qualification, done through DUT (Durban University of Technology) has a blended learning approach, which provides the necessary grounding for a professional career in sport. By adding sports science and management aspects to the programme, a more holistic student will be developed. This qualification aims to elevate the status of sports coaches and sports managers through the provision of a structured academic qualification and ensures that graduates will be able to operate effectively and be recognised as a professional by the sport industry. Students who graduate from this programme will have a formal qualification with which they may articulate in to a higher qualification in Sports Science and Management within the Sports Studies Department. A more detailed description of modules covered for the first year are as follows: Modules Principles of Coaching Sport Business Administration Teaching Physical Activity to Children Communication Skills Business Economics: Entrepreneurship and Finance Cornerstone 101 Sport Management 1: Principles of Sport Management Sport Marketing 1: Principles of Sport Marketing Project Management Management Principles of Anatomy and Physiology Purpose To introduce the student to the theoretical and practical scientific application within the sport coaching environment To provide students with theory and practical knowledge of sport business management and administrative functions in the sporting industry To train candidates to a competent level, enabling them to plan and deliver safe and effective physical activities for children To develop the communication skills of students To provide students with theoretical knowledge and practical application relevant to financial management and basic principles of entrepreneurship To induct students into the community of higher education, with values and practices that promote self-awareness, social justice and environmental sustainability To provide students with knowledge and practical competencies in general principles of management as applied to sport To enable students to apply effective marketing strategies in the sporting industry To provide students with insight into the technical, financial and organisational aspects of project management To introduce the student to the basic principles of anatomy and physiology in relation to physical conditioning
