Featured Topic: Headaches (3 slides)
Headache Relief Up to 80% of people suffer from tension headaches A survey of US pharmacists found their top brand recommendations for OTC headache products were: Advil (52%) [ibuprofen] Excedrin (24%) [acetaminophen + caffeine] Tylenol (20%) [acetaminophen] Motrin (15%) [ibuprofen] Aleve (14%) [naproxen]
But is the cure the cause of your pain? Did you know? Frequent use of OTC pain relievers especially ibuprofen (Advil) can CAUSE headache pain? Daily or frequent use of OTC pain relievers like Advil to treat your chronic headaches is a bad idea 1. After long term use, OTCs like Advil don t work that well 2. Chronic use of OTC medications for headaches makes other medications less effective for headache treatment 3. If you have used them long term, stopping leads to detox and rebound headaches 4. In addition to more headaches, other withdrawal symptoms include vomiting, low blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, sleep disturbances, restlessness, anxiety, and nervousness
Stopping headache pain the natural way Inflammation is one of the root causes of many types of headaches Curcumin and boswellia are powerful anti-inflammatories with no adverse effects! Boswellia has been shown to reduce the intensity and frequency of chronic cluster headaches DLPA helps increase the brain s natural pain-killing compounds (endorphins and enkephalin) About half of migraine sufferers are magnesium deficient; 41% reduction in migraine frequency after 600 mg of magnesium daily (12 week study) Magnesium versus a steroid drug/anti-nausea combination in 70 patients with acute migraine headache pain reduction was about 50% better in the magnesium group than in the drug group Many headache suffers are also serotonin deficient P-5-P has been shown to increase serotonin levels and reduce the pain and frequency of headaches
Evaporated Cane Juice (1 slide)
FDA Ruling on Evaporated Cane Juice FDA says: It s just sugar Food companies no longer allowed to disguise added sugar as evaporated cane juice it must be labeled as sugar Where does it come from? Sugar cane Crush sugar cane to extract the juice Purify the juice and remove the water Remaining fine crystals are sugar, previously known as evaporated cane juice FDA recommends this be called cane sugar Sugar beets are the other primary source of sugar About 66% of refined sugar is used in food manufacturing, with the remaining 34% going to direct home use
Sea Buckthorn Protects the Eyes (1 slide)
Sea Buckthorn protects the eyes The retina contains a high amount of fatty acids, including DHA, which need to be protected from oxidation due to their constant exposure to light Polyphenols, especially polyphenols from grape seed, have already been shown to be very effective at stopping oxidative damage to the eyes and preventing eye diseases such as macular degeneration In this new study, researchers tested the ability of sea buckthorn to protect the retina from light exposure [animal model] Results: 22% reduction in free radical levels in sea buckthorn group versus the control group More than doubled glutathione levels versus the control group 30% less structural damage to the eye versus the control group
Brief Look at the Ketogenic Diet (4 slides)
Short history of the Ketogenic Diet Designed in 1924 by a doctor at the Mayo Clinic as a treatment for epilepsy While effective, the ketogenic diet fell out of fashion with the development of anti-seizure drugs However, in 1994 the family of a young boy whose seizures could not be helped by medications rediscovered the ketogenic diet which helped their son become seizure free They started a foundation named after their son which is now a global leader in promoting ketogenic therapies Read more at
What exactly is the ketogenic diet? High in fat (majority of calories) plus adequate protein and NO sweets such as candy, cookies and desserts The strictest versions of this diet also prohibit carbohydrate-rich foods including bread, potatoes, rice, cereals and pasta A typical meal includes a source of fat such as heavy cream or butter, and a protein rich food plus a small amount of fruit or vegetable in a 4:1 ratio Four times as much fat as there is protein and carb combined
What happens to a body on the ketogenic diet? The purpose of the ketogenic diet is to replace sugar with fats as the body s main energy source The liver converts fat into fatty acids and ketones, which are then burned for energy Why this is helpful for seizures and other serious disorders isn t fully understood, but research shows it works 32% of epilepsy patients on the ketogenic diet and 29% of those following a modified Atkins diet had reduction in their seizures by 50% or more. 9% of those in the ketogenic diet group and 5% in the modified Atkins group had drops in their seizures by 90 percent or more
