1 Kirtland Community College Department Of Health Careers Cardiac Sonography Instructor: Neil Durocher/James Eastman Office: MTEC Rm 109 Office Phone: (989) Office hours: Mon/Wed 7a-8a Class time 8-10:30a M/W Program: Cardiovascular Sonography Program Course: SON (Complete Adult Echo) Description: This course presents cardiovascular related conditions and diseases. Their etiology and symptoms are discussed and correlated to cardiovascular imaging and techniques required to aid the physician in diagnosis of these conditions. Method of Lecture, discussion, demonstration, audio-visual materials, and selected Instruction: readings. Evaluation: Written tests and quizzes. Your grade is determined on a total point system. Each exam and quiz will have an assigned number of points. You must receive a total of 78% of the total points for a passing grade for the course as measured by the instructor s criteria. There will be no make up for unscheduled quizzes, the student will receive zero points for the missed quiz. If a student misses an exam they will lose 10% of the points for that exam, with the best possible grade being 90%. Course Objectives: At the end of the class the student should be able to: 1. Understand and explain the signs and symptoms of cardiovascular disease or conditions

2 2. Understand valvular heart disease, etiology and symptoms 3. Understand heart chamber function 4. Understand myocardium disease 5. Understand methods of cardiovascular imaging techniques to investigate various cardiac disease states 6. Recognize and describe image artifacts and techniques to minimize or eliminate them 7. Define ventricular function terminology Identify the etiologies, signs and symptoms, and risk factors of ischemic heart disease Classify the types of wall motion abnormalities Describe 2-D, M-mode, and Doppler features associated with ischemic heart disease Identify formulas associated with assessment of ventricular function Differentiate ways to assess global LV function and regional LV quantification 13. This policy applies for the entire Sonography program. Attendance in the clinical or lab area is mandatory. Any student having four clinical or lab absences during the entire Sonography program shall be placed on probation. Further absences may result in course failure and/or program failure. Any student failing to notify their clinical instructor by telephone of a clinical absence shall be placed on probation. A second incident of no-call/no-show for clinical will be grounds for program dismissal. Tardiness: Students are expected to consistently be on time. When a student accumulated three instances of tardiness, it will result in being counted as one absent clinical day. A tardiness exceeding two hours will be counted as an absence. Leaving clinical early will count as an absence or tardy. Any more than one absence may result in course failure. There is no way to make up an absence. Demonstrating Mastery When a student has had sufficient practice to master a specific

3 Of Clinic competency area, the student will be evaluated by an instructor. Students must demonstrate mastery of every competency area in order to earn a grade of satisfactory.
