2 PRESIDENT S REPORT The CHFS has had an exciting year and there are more new initiatives and programs planned for the coming year. Some highlights include: We have renewed our formal collaboration with the CCCN for our nursing members so that there are savings in membership fees when joining both organizations; 33 members took advantage of this offer. CHFS is very proud to announce this year s Annual Achievement Award recipient, Dr. Peter Liu. We hosted the 4th annual Heart Failure Update meeting in Toronto this year in collaboration with the Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research, allowing us to expand the scope and size of this educational event. The CHFS has joined with CCTN to develop a trainee research award which will be unveiled at this year s CCC in Vancouver. We have established a formal Website Content Committee and we look forward to launching a new website in Our newly formed Education Committee is working towards increased production of educational HF Webinars and regional HF events during the coming year. We are in the process of establishing a formal Research Committee stay tuned! We are pleased to announce that CHFS advocacy paper titled `The Need for Heart Failure Advocacy in Canada` has been accepted for publication by the CJC. This article was submitted on behalf of the Board and Membership of the CHFS. We wish to thank you for your support! Together we will be a stronger voice for HF advocacy and will work towards making HF quality of care a priority at the national level. We look forward to your involvement as our society grows and your continued efforts to expand our membership base by engaging colleagues in your local communities. Sincerely, Dr. Sean A. Virani CHFS President MEMBERSHIP STATISTICS Follow

3 FINANCIAL REPORT THE 2017 COMPREHENSIVE UPDATE OF THE CCS HF GUIDELINES The 2017 Comprehensive Heart Failure Guideline Update provides guidance for practicing clinicians on the diagnosis and management (self-care, pharmacologic, non-pharmacologic, device, and referral) to aid in day-to-day decisions for caring for patients with heart failure. This comprehensive guideline integrates and updates the last decade of heart failure recommendations and identifies challenges facing healthcare providers in heart failure management. The article is available at onlinecjc.ca. 4 The fourth edition of Heart Failure Update was held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre from May 12 to 13, This year, for the first time, the Canadian Heart Failure Society and Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research united to co host HF Update, bringing together the cardiovascular clinical and research communities under the same roof. With more than 450 attendees, HF Update has now become the second largest cardiovascular meeting in Canada, and by far the largest devoted specifically to heart failure. This national meeting was accredited by the Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS) for 10 Maincert section 1 credits. The planning committee was co chaired by Dr. Jonathan Howlett, past president of CHFS, Dr. Serge Lepage, past president of the Quebec Heart Failure Society and Dr. Mansoor Husain, executive director of the Ted Rogers Centre. Including the co chairs, the committee included thirteen members, representing both the CHFS and the Ted Rogers Centre. The committee consisted of cardiologists, Ted Rogers scientific leads, one nurse and one post doc fellow. Planning committee members appropriately represented the target audience of HF Update. This year s program explored the theme Bench to Bedside and offered the latest information for the practising clinician and nurse as well as a simultaneous stream focused on investigative research. The meeting featured three joint plenary sessions, simultaneous scientific sessions, three clinical workshop sessions and a debate session. HEART FAILURE UPDATE 2017 LEARNING OBJECTIVES Evaluate, recognize and treat patients with advanced heart failure Approach the increasing problem of right sided heart failure Identify novel structural heart and surgical interventions Identify how recent advances in genetics, stem cell and regenerative medicine will impact your patients with heart failure Treat complex heart failure cases including those with multiple comorbid conditions SAVE THE DATE: HEART FAILURE UPDATE 2018 TORONTO, MAY 11-12, 2018 Metro Toronto Convention Center Be sure to check out Dr. Stanley Nattel s, Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Cardiology (CJC), top article pick published in the CJC over the past year: Senni M, Greene SJ, Butler J, Fonarow GC, Gheorghiade M. 5 CHFS ANNUAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD The CHFS Annual Achievement Award was created in 2016 to recognize a member who has made significant contributions to the academic, research, or clinical scopes of heart failure. The CHFS is very pleased to announce this year s award recipient, Dr. Peter Liu. One of Dr. Peter Liu s hobbies is hiking. Going up a mountain, it s great to stop to see how far you ve come and admire the view. Then you realize how far there is yet to go. The same goes for medicine. Dr. Peter Liu is Chief Scientific Officer and Vice President, Research at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. When he started in the field over 25 years ago, a diagnosis of heart failure was like a death sentence. Now, These patients are living, true testaments to the scientific advances made. Dr. Peter Liu Dr. Liu has played a significant role in that progress. His lab has identified novel biomarker candidates for heart failure, and is evaluating them in new clinical settings to achieve personalized care. He was among the first to identify the key mechanisms of myocarditis, ranging from viral receptors to mapping out the molecular pathogenesis using gene knockout models. Dr. Liu has expanded the original concepts of host-immune interactions into the arena of innate immunity and cardiac injury and repair post-injury. He has also made important contributions to understanding the epidemiology of heart failure, particularly the adverse outcomes of new heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. Dr. Liu is a passionate advocate for heart failure care and research. He has contributed to many efforts in heart failure guidelines developed in Canada and U.S. Never be complacent, he says. We can find the solutions. We ve come a long way but there s way more ground to cover. The Canadian Heart Failure Society (CHFS) is a recognized Affiliate Organization of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS)

6 Based on the resounding success of the inaugural UBC Heart Failure Symposium in 2016 the organizing committee expanded the agenda the second year of the event. The 2017 UBC Heart Failure Symposium was held at the Sheraton Wall Center in Vancouver British Columbia on June 23rd and 24th. The symposium kicked off with a reception and evening satellite symposium on June 23rd. The event was co-sponsored by Cardiac Services B.C. and the Canadian Heart Failure Society. The theme of the satellite symposium was Managing Comorbidities in Heart Failure. The second day of the symposium consisted of a morning session themed Practical Approach to Heart Failure and this was followed a series of concurrent workshops. The topics ranged from palliative care in heart failure patients to management of cardiogenic shock. The theme of the afternoon session was Complex Heart Failure Patients. Overall, the symposium was attended by 167 participants which were made up of residents, nurses, family physicians, internists, researchers and cardiologists. The diversity of the participants allowed for excellent networking and a wide range of viewpoints and ideas on how heart failure management can be improved across the province of British Columbia. Once again, the feedback from this year s symposium was outstanding! With the resounding success of our second year we are very excited for next year s symposium and continuing to bring together the leaders in heart failure management from across our province and the rest of Canada. HF UPDATE PATIENT & CAREGIVER ENGAGEMENT WORKSHOP In collaboration with The HeartLife Foundation, The Heart and Stroke Foundation, and The Canadian Heart Failure Society, patients and caregivers were brought together to a half-day workshop to discuss heart failure advocacy in Canada. The purpose of the workshop was to gain insight and understand the current state of heart failure from the patient and caregiver perspective. The workshop was an opportunity to enable open dialogue, identify gaps in heart failure care, and provide preliminary strategies to fill said gaps. Prior to the session, the planning committee determined the objectives of the meeting were to educate, inspire and enable heart failure patients and their caregivers to: Advocate for improved services and systems that will improve their quality of life; Identify tools patients can use to interact with others diagnosed with heart failure; Understand the tools available for self-management and advice on other supports they need. The inaugural workshop was a success. There was a total of 26 participants representing patients and caregivers from 7 provinces. Furthermore, the workshop was lucky to have Nick Hartshorne-Evans, CEO of The Pumping Marvelous Foundation discuss Activating the Voice of the Lived Experience and Good Practices developed and utilized by his foundation. HeartLife will continue to partner with CHFS to advance patient engagement for Heart Failure in Canada.
