Essence of Light Two essential oil blends & their use in chronic Lyme & Co-Infections by Dr. Peter Kassner, NMD As a fellow survivor of chronic Lyme for over 21 years I have been on a quest to understand chronic infectious disease my entire adolescent and adult life. At age 17 I had my first, of three near brushes with death and out of desperation my first visit with a real Naturopath. I credit him with saving my life which led me to pursue a career in natural medicine including massage, and undergraduate and graduate degrees in Naturopathy. Presently I am completing a thesis study on Lyme for my masters in Chinese Medicine through Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine in Harbin China. I have gone the drug route several times and have consistently found that the natural approach has served me the best in restoring my ability to function without seizures or acute allergic reactions, to think clearly without debilitating fatigue and brain fog, to walk again without the fear of falling, freedom from debilitating depression, and all the other myriad of symptoms I have cycled through over the years. I have lived the darkness and isolation of this disease and out of desperation for answers sought out education, personal research and clinical practice for answers. Thus far I have found four things that have affected my health more profoundly than anything else. These include: Chinese medicine & herbs, emotional healing, detoxification, and the internal use of essential oils. Initially I developed these oils only for myself, family, and a few select clients. But I have seen such distinct and rapid benefits that I have felt compelled to share. What you are about to read is what I use personally, with no toxic effects. Many essential oils are not safe to take internally due to their potentially toxic properties. These formulas are the product of six-months of careful research and my clinical experience in the use of therapeutic essential oils. It is not only the selection of the ingredients that is important, but also the dosage, source and quality. Many of these oils are very safe in high concentrations while others should only be taken in low concentrations. Why essential oils? Essential oils go every where and rapidly penetrate every important tissue potentially infected by Lyme or co-infections: joints, living cells, bio-films, bone, across the blood brain barrier, and the spinal fluid. Essential oils are among most potent of anti-infectious agents against viruses, bacteria, parasites and fungi known to man. Why Oral? Efficiency and peak therapeutic levels are best reached with an oral dose. The path of least resistance to an essential oil is to evaporate into the air rather than to diffuse into the denser fluids and tissues of the body. Over 90% of any topical dose is potentially lost to evaporation. I didn't start having significant results from oils till I started taking them internally. Why are there so many oils in your formulation? Lyme is a very adaptable pest. The idea is to hem it in from many angles simultaneously and prevent it from doing anything other than die. Some oils have been selected for their cyst busting potential, while others are for neurological, emotional and detoxification support. Why are there two formulas? The prime real estate for treating any potentially resistant infection is rotation, rotation, rotation. In Lyme it isn't about if the infection will try to adapt to the existing program it's WHEN. A common
complaint amongst those with Lyme is that if something works, it only lasts for a time. Usually if you have been seeking treatment for awhile you very well may know what that time frame is. For some it's as short as 1-2 weeks and others as long as 6-12 months. So rotate, rotate, rotate. And rotate before you feel resistance developing, no matter what program you are on have a back up to cycle through. This only applies to anti-infectious agents, what you use for detoxification may need changing less or not at all. Essence of Light 1 Eucalyptus radiata has been used internally to treat a number of conditions and is know to be a powerful bactericidal at extremely low concentrations. A spray containing 2% of the oil will kill 70% of airborne staph. Eucalyptus is an effective anti-inflammatory, painkiller often used as an analgesic in rheumatic conditions. Also strongly anti-parasitic it has been used in Cuba to treat malaria amongst other acute infections and when combined with bergamont is effective at treating infections hiding in the nervous system. Neurologically it has a calming effect on the emotions, while enhancing concentration and steadying the nerves. Mucolytic (thins mucus) and diuretic (clearing the kidneys) properties also aid in lymph congestion and detoxification. In oral health Eucalyptus has been proven to disrupt biofilms. Taken internally this oil can also aid in reducing insulin resistance, a common problem in diabetes and chronic infections. Large quantities in excess of 4ml can be mildly toxic and cause acute gastric irritation and should be used in low doses orally. Frankincense - is a tonic oil, toning and supporting all the systems operating in the body, including respiratory system, digestive system, nervous system and excretory system and also gives strength by aiding absorption of nutrients and regulating digestion. Also marketed as Boswellia, Frankincense is known for its potent pain relieving and anti-inflammatory qualities as well as strengthening the immune system. A kidney tonic, Frankincense aids in regulating hypertension and the elimination of excess water, uric acid, and toxins. Neurologically it is an effective sedative and anti-neurotoxin, relieving anxiety, anger and stress while inducing positive feelings of mental peace, relaxation, satisfaction and spirituality, awakening insight and emotional healing. Known as Ru Xiang in Chinese medicine it is a bitter warming herb that relieves pain by activating blood circulation and moving stagnated qi. It enters the acupuncture channels of the heart, liver and spleen. While not only reducing swelling and inflammation Frankincense has tissue regenerative properties promoting accelerated healing. As a tonic for liver inflammation Frankincense also shows promise. In a study of 32 hepatitis patients with liver pain, 65% showed marked improvement and 19% moderate improvement, and only 6.25% showing no improvement. Frankincense is non-toxic and is well tolerated orally. Those with sensitive stomachs should start with low doses. Myrrh perhaps the most widely used antiseptic it is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral and is effective for many infections, such as fever, food poisoning, cough & cold, mumps, measles, pox, infected wounds, and is frequently used in the treatment of gingivitis and ulcers. Myrrh accelerates tissue regeneration in poor healing and increases leukocyte counts (white blood cells). It has no adverse side effects unlike other antibiotics, such as weakening of liver, malfunctioning of digestion or suppression of the immune system. Myrrh is also a very nice anti-inflammatory, fever reducer, thins mucus relieving lymphatic congestion, and promotes sweating for the elimination of ammonia and other toxins through the skin. Known for its stimulating and sedating properties, Myrrh tends to balance the mind and nervous system from extremes. This dynamic property seems to work well for Lyme in that it seems to calm nerves over stimulated by toxins while enhancing mental sharpness and relieving depression. Known as Mo Yao in Chinese medicine, Myrrh moves the blood and is a strong disperser of blood stagnation in painful obstruction syndrome. It is used as an analgesic for relieving
muscle pain, as well as to treat wind, and damp conditions. Improving fat metabolism, this oil has marked effects in reducing cholesterol. While toxic in very large doses, Myrrh has been used internally for centuries and is well within the safe range in this formula when dosed as directed. Peppermint well known for its ability to treat indigestion, respiratory problems, headache, nausea, fever, stomach and bowel spasms as well as pain. Peppermint is also anti-parasitic, antiseptic, a liver tonic and relieves nerve pain. Known as Bo He in Chinese medicine Peppermint helps disperse windheat, soothes and relieves liver qi stagnation, and disperses turbid qi from the abdomen. Also known for its ability to clear the head and brighten the eyes, peppermint is an effective tonic to revive the mind. Its selection in this formula is to balance the energy of the other oils. Widely used in food, Peppermint is very safe even in high doses. Spearmint is a bit different than peppermint in its therapeutic actions. While it does have similar properties of soothing and aiding digestion, respiratory problems, headache, nausea and promoting the secretion of digestive enzymes, Spearmint was historically used in Greece to treat syphilis an infection in the same family as Lyme. Restorative in nature, this oil relieves muscle spasms, promotes circulation, improves the secretion of hormones, balances all the organs and aids in tissue regeneration. Spearmint is widely used in food and is safe for oral intake. Lemongrass is anti-protozoal and potentially active against babesia and bartonella. Additionally it is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and analgesic. Its anti-microbial properties inhibit microbial and bacterial growth in the body, internally or externally. It is seen to be effective in inhibiting bacterial infections in many areas of the body and helps cure diseases resulting from bacterial or microbial infections such as typhoid, food poisoning, skin diseases, and malaria (a protozoa). The essential oil also acts as a tonic for the nervous system, aiding in many neurological disorders such as shaking hands or limbs, nervousness, vertigo, Alzheimer s disease, Parkinson s disease, convulsions, sluggishness, lack of reflexes etc. Mentally Lemongrass is antidepressant lifting self esteem, confidence, hope and general mental strength. It also relieves anxiety and is useful in acute depression and shock. Lemongrass has no toxic properties, but can be mildly irritating if not started slowly. Ginger root used by the Greeks to antidote poison and has been used in the treatment of malaria and yellow fever. Also renown for its digestive balancing properties Ginger is useful for food poisoning, nausea, vomiting, intestinal infections, bacterial dysentery, indigestion, stomach ache, dyspepsia, colic, spasms, diarrhea, flatulence and other stomach and bowel related problems. Ginger is very effective in removing mucus from the throats and lungs and hence may be helpful in lymph congestion as well. Its anti-inflammatory properties can be attributed to the presence of the substance named Zingibain and studies suggest that regular use of ginger may lead to reduction of prostaglandins which are compounds produced by the body associated with pain. Ginger stimulates detoxification through balancing digestion and enhancing the excretion of toxins through the skin. Its stimulating neurological properties aids in warming the emotions, sharpening the mind and reviving depleted states aiding in depression, mental stress, exhaustion, dizziness, restlessness and anxiety. Know in Chinese medicine as Gan Jiang, it dispels cold and dampness, warms the Middle Jiao, aids in spleen and stomach cold syndrome, restores depleted Yang, dissolves phlegm, and warms the lungs. Historically consumed as a spice and food oral essential oil of ginger is well tolerated and non-toxic. Clary sage was selected for this formula because of its potent anti-convulsive properties whether it be epileptic or nervous in nature. Its muscle relaxant properties are effective in reducing pain associated with spasms common in Lyme. Sedating in nature, Clary Sage makes an excellent stress tonic boosting self esteem, confidence, hope and mental strength while relieving anxiety and acute depression. Being
relaxant and sedative in nature, it can enhance the intoxicating effects of and should not be mixed with alcohol and other narcotics. Heavy dosage can cause headache. Clary Sage and Common Sage are different. Sage has high levels of thujone and can be toxic if take internally. Clary Sage however, has much lower levels of this chemical and is safe orally in low to moderate dosages. Bergamont has an affinity for fighting fever inducing infections from virus, bacteria, parasites and even protozoa infections like malaria. It stimulates secretion of certain hormones which lessen sensitivity of nerves to pain and works well in cases that would require heavy dosage of analgesic medications. Mentally this oil is a stimulant and sedative properties, giving a feeling of freshness, joy and energy in cases of sadness and depression. Its stimulating properties also improve circulation and hormone secretion, particularly insulin. If you are on diabetic medication you may require less, care should be taken to monitor for drops in blood sugar. Bergamont has a high affinity for the urinarygenital tract and is helpful in cystitis, urethritis, and was once used in the treatment of syphilis and STD's. This quality may makes it a good candidate to aid in clearing the urinary tract of Lyme. Bergamont is non-toxic and safe for oral ingestion. Mountain Savory is more potent than a number of oils in its antimicrobial activity against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. It is recommended for treating many types of intestinal infections and parasites. It is an excellent natural remedy that promotes cardiovascular health and assists in red blood cells formation is also a potent immune stimulant and anti-inflammatory. Mentally, Mountain Savory is a stimulant aiding as a nerve tonic energizing and enhancing motivation. It aids in reviving the adrenals and depleted sates, especially in chronic illness. Mountain Savory is non-toxic safe for oral ingestion in small quantities. In large doses it can irritate the mucosa. Bay Laurel - improves many metabolic functions like decomposition of food and absorption of nutrients by toning up the liver, promoting the discharge of bile during digestion, toning stomach and intestines, increasing general strength and health; aids in toxin excretion; regulates the secretion of hormones and enzymes and also tones the nervous system, aiding in alertness and activity after illness, and finally, boosts the immune system. Analgesic and astringent in nature, Bay Laurel can be beneficial in treating painful conditions like neuralgia, rheumatism, muscular pain, circulation problems, cold, flu, and dental infection. Bay Laurel is mildly narcotic and has a warming effect on the body and emotions, especially with those that are having difficulty releasing emotions. Widely used in food Bay Laurel is non-toxic. Myrtle counters the accumulation of phlegm, a major component that develops of chronic infection. It is often helpful in allergies and is said to do so by increasing one's mental balance with environmental irritants, which may have other applications in Lyme. Many of its other properties are similar to eucalyptus but is less stimulating. Myrtle is non-toxic Basil - improves blood circulation, is analgesic and provides relief from pain. It is also a very broad spectrum anti-bacterial, and anti-viral. Basil essential oil has a refreshing effect and is used for treating nausea, vomiting, nervous tension, mental fatigue, melancholy, migraines and depression. Due to this calming nature its regular use gives mental strength and clarity. Widely used in food, Basil is non-toxic. Geranium is anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-parasitic. It's diuretic and detoxification properties aid the elimination of urea, uric acid, bile salts, pathogens, synthetic chemical substances, and heavy metals. The balancing action of Geranium in the endocrine system is on the adrenal cortex and has a regulating effect in fluctuating hormonal conditions. It is a tonic to the nervous system, reducing stress and lifting the spirits. Geranium is non-toxic and safe for oral ingestion in moderate doses.
Thyme is anti-bacterial, and anti-parasitic but perhaps the most important action is that Thyme stimulates the production of white blood cells and strengthened immunity. Another rare property is that it counteracts adrenalin surges and over reactions to stressful stimuli and calms spasms caused by excessive acetylcholine. This oil is very beneficial for the heart. It keeps its valves functioning properly; being an anti spasmodic, it relaxes the arteries and veins and thereby reduces blood pressure as well as the stress on heart; as well as strengthening the cardiac muscles. Mentally it acts as a memory booster, improves concentration and is antidepressant. Thyme is widely used a a spice in food and is non-toxic. Lemon is a potent anti-bacterial and has some anti-parasitic properties. A dilution of 0.2% can inactivate tuberculosis bacilli completely in 20min. Among its important properties is its ability to stimulate the immune system and increase white blood cell production as well as to aid in countering acidity commonly found in rheumatism; which Lyme is known to cause. Calming in nature, it helps in removing mental fatigue, exhaustion, dizziness, anxiety, nervousness and nervous tension. It has the ability to refresh the mind by creating a positive mind-frame and removing negative emotions. It is also believed that inhaling lemon oil helps in increasing concentration and alertness. Lemon is also helpful in relieving insomnia. A common food and the oil of Lemon is safe for ingestion. Tea tree in the native tradition of this oil it is used to treat ugly, persistent infections. These types of infections are where bio-films and complex cyst walls to protect viral and bacterial infections abound. For this reason, I believe Tea tree breaks down these barriers to get at the hidden infection inside with its own properties as well as making way for other antimicrobials. Its potentially one of the most potent natural cyst busters found in nature and is the primary reason it is included in this formulation. It is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-parasitic, and anti-protozoal including the treatment of malaria, and tropical fevers. This oil also stimulates the production of white blood cells and boosts immune activity. While not commonly taken internally, ancient traditions have chewed the leaves for dental infections and to make poultices for wounds. Teas were also made from the leaves for intestinal infections. While noted as potentially toxic by some authors, no human toxicology studies presently exist to confirm or refute the claim. But as is true with all essential oils, and even most foods, there is a threshold that could be too much. Taking from tradition, low to moderate doses seem to be fine and is well tolerated. On a personal note, I have and continue to take this oil internally on a daily basis without any long term complications. Tangerine is particularly active against staph infections. This action is important in that staph is a common co-infection in Lyme and produces aggressive bio-films that Lyme can complex with and when located in the sinuses can suppress pituitary and MSH function. Tangerine soothes all types of inflammations and hyperactivity in all the systems functioning in our body, namely, the respiratory system, circulatory system, digestive system, nervous system and the excretory system. Neurologically it is a sedative with a specific ability to moderate anger and impulsive responses common in Lyme. It improves circulation of the blood, the movement of phlegm, and boosts digestion. A common food Tangerine oil is safe for oral ingestion. Orange moves the lymph and in con junction with its anti-inflammatory properties is the main action of this oil. It promotes normal secretions from all glands, exocrine or endocrine. As a tonic, Orange is well suited for the young, frail and failing constitutions; gently lifting the whole body and mind. Taken in excess Orange can be toxic causing nausea and vomiting, but is safe in low doses. Clove Bud is most prominently used in dental care where its potent antimicrobial and anti-biofilm
properties have been most studied. Also anti-parasitic and larvicidal clove may prove useful in interfering with the reproductive cycle Lyme and its co-infections. It has a stimulating effect on the mind and removes mental exhaustion and fatigue; leaving refreshed sense of wellness. Clove oil also induces appropriate sleep and is helpful to insomnia patients. Because it is warming and moves blood, it is useful for treating stagnation and mental problems such as loss of memory, depression and anxiety. Five percent solutions and less are non-irritating and are safe for ingestion. Cinnamon is anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal, but its man function is to purify and move the blood. Cinnamon has blood thinning properties and helps relieve pain and stiffness of muscle and joints by promoting circulation. It is also known to aid in lowering blood sugar through improved insulin sensitivity. It also boosts the activity of the brain and hence acts as a good brain tonic. It helps in removing nervous tension and memory loss. Research at the Wheeling Jesuit University in the US has proved that the scent of cinnamon has the ability to boost brain activity. The team of researchers led by Dr. P. Zoladz found that people who were administered with cinnamon improved their scored on cognitive activities such as attentional processes, virtual recognition memory, working memory, and visual-motor response speed. also anti inflammatory. Strong in nature, Cinnamon is well tolerated in low dilutions and is non-toxic. Nutmeg is anti-bacterial, anti-parasitic, and larvicidal. It reduces the swelling of joints is very useful for treating muscular pain. A cardio-stimulant, Nutmeg tones the cardiovascular system and strengthens the heart. An important health benefit of nutmeg oil is its ability to treat liver diseases. The oil is capable of removing toxins from the liver. Toxic in high doses, nutmeg is uniquely most effective in low doses and safe for oral ingestion. Lavender has a profoundly balancing and calming effect on the central nervous system, and an antineurotoxin effect. Lavender essential oil is also an excellent remedy for various types of pains including those caused by sore muscles, tense muscles, muscular aches, rheumatism, sprains, backache and lumbago. In renal disruption, Lavender seems to promote urine production and thus is thought to have an effect on a number of hormones affecting the kidneys. Lavender oil is useful for digestion as it increases the mobility of the intestine, stimulates the production of gastric juices and bile. While not commonly taken internally it is non-toxic and well tolerated. Black Cumin - has detoxifying and chemo-preventive properties and accelerates secretion of detoxifying and anti-carcinogenic enzymes from the glands. Mohammed said that black cumin cures every disease but death itself. The reason might be found in the complex chemical structure of the seeds. These little seeds have over one hundred different chemical constituents, including abundant sources of all the essential fatty acids. Immunomodulatory, Black Cumin is effective in regulating autoimmune conditions that often crop up in Lyme. Black cumin stimulates neutrophil activity. These are the short-lived immune cells that are normally found in bone marrow but mobilized into action when there is a bacterial infection. Extracts of black cumin have also been shown to modulate production of interleukins. In vitro studies performed in Jordan and the United States have determined that the volatile oil is anti-leukemic. A valued food in many countries, Black Cumin is well tolerated internally.
