3 Special Needs Prom 2018 On Friday, August 24, Crossroads Community Church hosted their 2018 Special Needs Prom. Crossroads Community Church is located in Kokomo, Indiana. Our Kokomo staff from Meaningful Day Services volunteered at the prom, assisting where needed. The event consisted of a Hawaiian Luau theme, in which family and friends joined for an evening of fun! The church offered refreshments and games, such as mini-bowling, bean bag toss, and checkers. Other activities for the participants included pictures with an ocean backdrop and singing on stage. Participants enjoyed listening to music, dancing, and taking photos while at the prom. MDS Newsletter 3 September 2018 Kokomo staff volunteer at the Crossroads Community Church Special Needs Prom. 4 [ CLIENT CORNER Meet Drew! Drew has been a Recreational Therapy client with MDS since April Among Drew s multiple diagnoses, she has been partially blind since birth. For many years, Drew has only been able to see a couple feet away, at best. Drew is full of life, loves everything bright, and loves to try new leisure activities with friends. Her vision has not limited what she can do, but has forced her to adapt her life around her vision. In 2018, her mother was watching CNN and saw esight glasses and decided to give the company a call. After purchasing the glasses, Drew was able to start wearing them for a little bit at a time to allow her eyes, body, and brain a chance to get used to them. Drew participates in a girl s Recreational Therapy group and decided to try them out in Recreational Therapy for the first time. When Drew s therapist arrived to get her, the therapist was struck with emotion watching Drew really see her and her peers for the first time. Drew was able to see everyone s face clearly for the first time, even commenting on eye color and her peers hair. During this specific group, the girls were bowling. Drew was able to throw a ball down the alley without a ramp for the first time. The glasses allowed her to see the lane and know where to throw. She was even able to identify how many pins she knocked down. The smile that stayed on Drew s face was a day the therapist will never forget. For more information on esight glasses, visit the website MDS Newsletter 4 September 2018
5 E M P L O Y E E C O R N E R ] Pam Thompson We would like to recognize our Assistant Director of Recreational Therapy, Pam Thompson. Pam s role extends far beyond Assistant Director. Pam has been a recreational therapist with Meaningful Day Services since July 2013 and still serves a small caseload of clients, when she s not supporting student interns and other therapists within the Recreational Therapy Department. Pam also serves as one of the company s First Aid/CPR instructors, where she uses some of her personal experiences and stories to make the training more interesting and fun for the participants. Additionally, Pam serves on the MDS Culture Committee and actively participates in both employee and client community activities and events. Pam is a well-respected, approachable, genuine, and compassionate therapist and supervisor. She is attentive to detail and strives for excellence in everything she does. We appreciate all you do, Pam! Ashley Heil This month, we would like to recognize Insurance Specialist, Ashley Heil. Ashley has been with MDS for seven years and demonstrates dependability and dedication to our organization. Also, her positive attitude is an inspiration to her fellow coworkers. Ashley has proven that she is flexible with all the changes that have occurred in the Insurance Department over the last few years. With the growth of MDS, Ashley has taken additional responsibilities and continues to follow through on all assignments, completing them in a timely and reliable manner. In addition, she follows-up with customers to ensure satisfaction. We appreciate and are thankful for all the hard work and commitment Ashley brings to MDS on a daily basis.
