I would like to take this opportunity to thank the students for their behaviour and engagement in our fourth term specialty activities and hope that the experiences resonate with them throughout their lives. To our larger community thank you for your support of our Program in 2015, whether it was by dining in the restaurant or for the supportive s we appreciate your feedback. For many of you, your relationship with the Institute will continue either as a Senior student or as a tertiary student. For others it is the end of a two year partnership with the program and we wish you well for the future. Thank you to the Senior cohort for instigating the last day celebration and a special thank you to Darcy for a wonderful speech honouring the staff. Most importantly I would like to acknowledge the work of the teachers and support staff for being generous with both their time and the energy that they put into caring for the students. Thank you; your efforts are most appreciated and your influence extends beyond the classroom.

2 Special Group Events Salvo s Tour On the 13 th of October, 25 students attended an information session hosted by the Salvation Army focusing on the topic homelessness. day started off at the Salvo s main reception in Bourke St where students took part in activities highlighting the staggering statistics that 100,000 people in Australia are homeless each night and of that number, half are under the age of 24! Hard to imagine but the reality is, the number of homeless people in Australia on any given night could reach the capacity of the MCG. We also explored: what the term homeless means, events that led to homelessness, the issues faced by people that found themselves without a place to call home and how the Salvos assist people to regain control of their life. We were then taken on a tour around the streets of Melbourne to identify locations where some people find themselves sleeping rough. It was truly an eye opening experience and one that taught the students never to take anything for granted in life because things can sometimes change in an instant. Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) re are many signs and symptoms relating to drinking problems. Alcoholism is considered a progressive disease, meaning that the symptoms and effects of drinking alcohol become increasingly more severe over time but quite often begins with binge drinking. AA is a fellowship of men and women who share their experiences, hopes and strengths to help solve their common problem of alcohol dependence. students were visited by two members of AA, Maddy and Melissa who bravely shared their stories and life experiences in relation to their addiction and their journey to gain control of their lives with the help and support from the AA community. Reflecting on the visit the students were able to empathise with Maddy and Melissa s journeys but also appreciate the resilience that they were now displaying. 2 P a g e

3 Prevent Alcohol Related Trauma in Youth Program On the 22 nd of October 22 students had the privilege of attending the P.A.R.T.Y Program run by the Royal Melbourne Hospital. aim of the program is to raise awareness of risks and to hopefully prevent trauma in youth. Throughout the day students listened to presentations from health professionals and had the opportunity to participate in practical sessions where they undertook activities with a range of trauma therapists such as physios and occupational and speech therapists. y also had the opportunity for patient contact with a visit to the ward to talk to a recent trauma patient, as well a really informative discussion with a person who had sustained a spinal injury. Although at times it was a challenging experience for the students they behaved respectfully and were mindful of the sensitive nature of the environment. y came away with an awareness of how valuable and fragile life is and how quickly life can change, as well as a deep appreciation of the service that health care workers provide. I learnt a lot from the P.A.R.T.Y. Program, it made me realise how the choices I make will affect my life. - Melissa Daniels, Intermediate. 4 Trade Feature Cookery 1st year (Units 1+2) Teacher Trevor Wilden On Thursday the 15 th of October, Trevor s 1&2 Cookery class ventured out to Lygon St in Carlton to experience Toto s Pizza House: Australia s first ever pizzeria! students had been learning about the history of Italian cuisine and ingredients and how pizza had changed to our Australian style! class enjoyed a lovely pizza lunch followed by a much needed gelato on an extremely hot spring day! Food and Bev 1st year (Units 1+2) Teacher Ross Baker Hospitality Food and Beverage Class went to the Langham for a buffet lunch. class were treated to an array of foods prepared by Japanese, Indian and Italian chefs. After eating as much as they possibly could, the class was taken on a tour of the hotel by Mehul, the Club Lounge Manager, an employee of 10 years. y visited the 23 rd floor Club Lounge and were able to see the beautiful views over the Yarra River and Melbourne CBD. students were very impressed by the spa suite which had its own separate lounge room and spa bathroom with deluxe toiletries and 8 face washers! tour was extremely beneficial for students to gain an insight into the operations of a five star hotel! 4 P a g e

5 Intermediate Walking Tours Intermediate Class walking tours continued through term 4, starting with Tani and Danika s tour through China Town. Commencing at Parliament Station and concluding at Melbourne Central, the tour gave an insight into Melbourne s wealthy history during the gold rush which led to an influx of Chinese migrants and Melbourne being fortunate to have one of the largest China Towns in the world! students also had a chance to see some of Melbourne s best Asian restaurants including Flower Drum, China Bar and Shanghai Dumplings. Another great walking tour was organised by Lucas and Wilder. On the 23 rd of October the class got to go behind the scenes of one of Melbourne s biggest tourist attractions, MCG! class learnt about historical facts and significant events held at the MCG such as the 1956 Olympic Games, 2006 Commonwealth Games and of course, the annual Toyota AFL Grand Final and Boxing Day Test. Senior Although only a short term its still been very busy for the Senior students who have been working hard to complete and submit all of their final pieces of work. term has also consisted of some great team events such as Stephanie s Sports Day, Alex and Elena s pizza fundraising day to raise money for Beyond Blue and Laura and Racquel s dress up day to celebrate the Senior s last day of school! This involved students dressing up in their old school uniform followed by lunch in Angliss Restaurant and a group presentation where both students and staff were acknowledged for their efforts in day was an excellent way to farewell the 2015 Senior Students. 5 P a g e

6 Appreciation Award This term s appreciation award goes to: Stephanie for her leadership and organisational skills in facilitating a Sports Day for primary school children as part of the community topic. We receive your results from the VCAA in mid-december and they will be mailed to the contact details you have provided. For students returning to complete their Senior in 2016 please note that: Enrolment Day is 27 th January If you are under 18 years of age you will need to be accompanied by a parent/guardian who is responsible for signing forms and paying fees on your behalf. Letters of acceptance with trade allocation will be ed at the start of December. Please ensure that you RSVP prior to 10/12 to secure your place for You will also be able to order a Senior polo on Enrolment Day, full cash payment preferred, so watch out for next year s design coming to your inbox soon.
