The Resilience Project: Setting Goals and Finding Purpose in Life By 1 Finding Your Purpose: Taking Life to the Next Level Learning Outcomes: -To be able to identify your sense of purpose -To be able to discuss life goals - What am I going to DO to make my life purposeful? Give Credit Where Credit is Due: Realize Your Resilience 2 3 1
Koko Head Crater Resilience What Skills is Resilience? active coping facing fears positive emotions cognitive reappraisal social support purpose 4 I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can t accept not trying. - Michael Jordan The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising everytime we fall. Nelson Mandela 5 Four Types of Resilience Let s Play! Quest 1: Physical Resilience Quest 2: Mental Resilience Quest 3: Emotional Resilience Quest 4: Social Resilience 6 2
Purpose: Realize Your Resilience 7 Why does this matter? Purpose and Longevity Purpose and Happiness Purpose and Self Efficacy/Sense of Worth Controlling your negative actions will enhance your relationship, and leave more time and energy for being positive. 8 Goal Setting: Goals, Purpose & Values 1) What are you doing or thinking? 2) Is what you are doing or thinking in line with your values? 3) If not, how do you align your activities, thoughts and behaviors with your values? 9 3
Finding My Purpose My gifts, talents or Value to me Value to others attributes Example 1: I am creative I can think outside the box I can engage people with new ideas or information 10 The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well. Ralph Waldo Emerson 11 Activity: My Purpose Wheel Step 1: Make a list of everything you have done over the last week (or month). Include activities you did on your own, like workout, write a paper, checkout your friend s on Facebook, as well as events that took place with other people, like went to a meeting, had dinner, etc. This list can be as exhaustive as you want it to be. Step 2: Label each item in your list as either Life-giving or Life-draining. Life-giving: it made you or someone else more energized, more knowledgeable, more satisfied, more committed, or more grateful. Life-draining: it made you or someone else feeling mundane, ordinary, uninspired, thoughtless, self-seeking, or discontented. 12 4
My Purpose Wheel 13 Goals- What am I going to do? 14 Goals: Do Good, Be Good 1) Example: Join an organization on campus and help them think of new and creative ways to better the campus community (hosting events, raising awareness about an important issue, educating the student body etc.). 2) Example: Volunteer at the Student Learning Center once a week and help tutor other students. 15 5
What s Next? Your Resilience Plan Divide into groups of three to four Discuss one goal you have listed with your group Discuss one way you are going to seek support If you have any questions about how to take action ask the group! 16 Watch your thoughts they become your words Watch your words they become your actions Watch your actions they become your habits Watch your habits they become your character Watch your character it becomes your destiny! Lao Tzu View from the top of Koko Head 17 Thank you! jzarubafounta@css.edu 18 6
