Encouraging your young people to join in is easy - it can be as simple as asking them to collect old round pounds, or taking things to the next level with a sponsored spot challenge. You ll find all the inspiration and tools you ll need in this pack and online. 3 me to Changing lives across the UK Get ready for a spot explosion as schools across the UK take part in The Big Spotacular. Selling, wearing, and round pound collecting their way to a truly amazing total. The more schools going spotty the better. Because every penny raised will have an enormous impact on over 2,500* projects throughout the UK. *As at end June On your marks... Jigsaw, South East Grinstead Jake is 14 years old, and finds the responsibility of being the eldest sibling quite tough. One of Jake s younger brothers, Noah, had cerebral palsy whilst the youngest, Thomas, has severe learning difficulties. Jake had always supported his brothers and been very involved in their lives so, when Noah died two years ago from pneumonia, it hit Jake hard. Jake received help to come to terms with his brother s death from Jigsaw, South East Grinstead, giving him time and space to grieve and find a way forward.

4 The hunt for Pudsey s Round Pounds is on! Time is running out to use up those round pounds, and there are still millions to be found. So as a really easy way to get involved, why not get your young people to collect any old pound coins and donate them to BBC Children in Need? You could even pit classes against each other to see who can find the most. Parents are bound to have a few lying around, and after the 15 October, they will be out of circulation. You can find a letter template online at bbcchildreninneed.co.uk/schools/scotland/resources get creative Ask your young people or parents to create their own personalised collection tins to round up those much needed pounds. spread the word Help spread the word by putting up a free round pound poster at your school. 5 helping children help children Why take part? Join The Big Spotacular and you ll help change the lives of disadvantaged children and young people living throughout the UK. Last year alone we helped 490,000 children. * Donations from schools help over 2500 * projects all of which have an enormous impact on children and their families. And the good news doesn t stop there. Your young people can take so much from Spotacular. By planning the event and taking part, they ll develop their ability to work as a team, communicate and self-motivate. It s a chance for them to be creative, make decisions and feel proud about what they ve achieved. And our online educational resources can help link your fundraiser to the curriculum too. What s more, it s a chance for the whole school to share in something memorable. *As at end of June 2017 SUPPORTED BY CHANGING CHILDREN S LIVES ACROSS THE UK Changing ELLA s life Finding out that your mum has cancer is hard for any child to cope with. But when this comes at a time when you are preparing for exams, it is doubly hard. For 16-year-old Ella, receiving support from Hope Support Services online team was a lifesaver. Through regular s with one of Hope s online support facilitators, Ella could talk about her feelings and experiences. Although Ella s mum is now much better, Ella is still receiving support from Hope s Facebook support community and says that she feels calmer as a result. It is through your generous support that these services are made possible.

6 Spot Challenge SUPPORTED BY Get your young people to don their swimming caps, pop on their trainers and take on a challenge that ll rally those sponsors. Whether your young people are better at baking cakes or eating them; playing sports or cheering others on, encourage them to turn a favourite activity into a challenge. Any budding interior designers can ensure that surroundings are suitably spotty so no-one forgets who you re fundraising for! Battle of the bakes To add a dash of spice to a bake sale, why not split your young people into different teams and see which one sells the most? The team that raises the most wins. Winchester Young Carers Saskia (16) has been caring for her mum since the age of 11. She helps to cook the dinner, do the laundry and clean, as well as accompanying her mum to hospital appointments and providing emotional support. All of this responsibility gives Saskia little time to herself. Thankfully, Winchester Young Carers run weekly nights where young carers can get together and have fun, and this has helped Saskia grow in confidence, build friendships and share her experiences with others in similar positions.

7 Take on a swap Get young people to give up something that s bad for them like chips, and swap it with something good like carrots. Or swap being stuck inside watching the TV for getting outside with trainers. They could even swap hobbies. Whatever they swap, this is a great excuse for young people to try something they may have never done before, and raise money for a great cause. footie match Got the skills? Then challenge another class or school to a charity football match, or any other sport you love. A teacher versus young people friendly would draw in support. To raise even more funds, why not sell tickets for the match, or run a guess the final score competition? Get your own back Wouldn t it be nice to involve the teachers? Switch the wet sponge for a challenge of your choice and get students and staff donating to nominate their favourite to face it. You could even nominate teachers to face off against each other. Better still, sponsor them all to get involved with a staff talent show or teacher fancy dress day.

8 Team offs Whether it s the rugby, chess or netball team, it s time to settle the score and find out which school team will reign supreme. Get your young people to rally together, nominate other teams and pick a game to find out who the real champs are. And you don t need to just limit it to sports - what about bakers swapping places with the debating team or the school choir swapping places with photography club, all for a small donation? Personal bests Whatever your young people excel at - be it running, swimming, dancing or anything else, why not challenge them to set themselves a new personal best? It s a sure way to get more sponsors lined up. That way, you can have several Spot Challenges going on at once. What s more, organising their own fundraiser will be great experience - something to go on UCAS forms and CVs. That s why we ve introduced a new Student Zone so the young people can really take charge. Here s a few things to help them out. Line up your sponsors Remind young people to spread the word about these fun challenges to their family, other young people and people from their local community. Then share, tweet and post to your heart s content. Cardiff City FC, Cardiff, Wales Lucy was diagnosed with Mitochondrial Disease when she was 5 years old. This rare condition affects how the muscles in her body work, including her movement and her speech. Lucy loves sport but because of her condition she is unable to join in with sport activities at school. But at Cardiff FC Foundation she has a chance to play wheelchair football each week. Not only does this mean she is included and can make new friends but she s doing an activity she loves. By supporting BBC Children in Need, you are helping children like Lucy to enjoy life.

11 go PUBLIC Host a launch event in assembly to announce your Spotacular fundraiser. Then get photocopying those event posters. open your own mini bank Rally some aspiring bankers to open their own donations bank during lunch break. Classes or groups of young people can come and deposit the money they have raised and the rolling total can be recorded on the Spotacular-o-meter. Lucky duck pin up your spotacular-o-meter Let everyone know how much you re raising, by adding class or group totals onto the meter for everyone to admire.
