GIRFEC 3 rd Sector Event 7 th July 2014 Pathways Variable Short Breaks Bureaus Variable Social Services Housing Support Services GPs No 3 rd Sector Representation (Executive Group) TURNING POINT SCOTLAND Developing Services, 11-16yr old Schools / Colleges Landlords Advocacy Variable Housing Officers Parent Council Meetings Presentations Workshops
Family & Participation Officer, NDCS What I do empower families to reach their full potential, reduce isolation How I do it Provide information, advice and support, unbiased TEA + TEARS Facilitate peer support networks VI Services Difficulty understanding my role Not willing to refer, share names Reliant on education to maintain links joined up working Social Work HI Services Communication poor, phone calls not returned What can you give us, not how can we work together Hostile HI Hearing Impairment VI Visual Impairment Parents / Families HI Services We are isolated One person controls the service my child receives We want information to make the right decisions for my child VI Services My child is isolated from his VI peers No mobility training for a long time No confidence in services from SW Information unbiased support NATIONAL DEAF CHILDREN S SOCIETY Opthamology / Orthoptics (SEE HEAR PROJECT D&G) No referrals No engagement SC VI clinic closed shop Council Health Speech & Language The local group does that We have it covered Don t need you Hostile Education HI Services Yes we need you What a great service Can t / won t refer Won t engage with peer support groups VI Services Much more engagement Parents/families receive a better service Audiology But that is so and so s job Once they leave our service we have no contact ignoring mild/moderate deafness We don t need you
Brokerage Shocking lack of information and seem uninterested in trying to improve the service No referrals going through where are children? (Many services do not like GIRFEC referral forms as not enough info) Completely review process of placing children Health Visitors Poor communication never return calls. Only in contact when they need information. Health visitors to contact nursery once a term? Should appreciate that phone calls we make are important Council re school placements No communication with families/nurseries. Treat families very poorly. Disrespectful. GIRFEC plays no part! Completely review process (wish someone from education had been here to discuss this with) JAYBEES NURSERY Education e.g. EV s / Early Years / Schools Communication is good no problems Social Work Always helpful. On occasions when unable to contact health visitors as NP we contact Social Work who are happy to help and advise Hearing Specialists Now have good communication and children are supported well having raised problems in the past S&L Support Great Communication. Very supportive for staff and children. (First meetings difficult as don t always GIRFEC but worked together to resolve)
Springboard gets referrals from all different sources only a small percentage are under 16 who come through agencies listed below. If challenges arise with clients first action would be to contact the referral agency for advice/support/to take over. Springboard only provides access to training for hospitality, leisure, tourism sector no expertise in other areas so rely on good support networks. Apex SPRINGBOARD DGC Employability & Skills Dept Excellent Experience They know their clients Communicate well Have systems and processes to support Client centred approach Support Worker Mixed Experiences ACAD Support Workers Schools Directly Head Teacher Experience They know their clients Client centred approach Excellent Experience Reasons things have worked: Clear communication channels established at the outset Excellent leadership in referral organisations Genuine client centred approaches by referral organisations BLOCKAGES: Genuine respect for views and experience of 3 rd Sector Genuine engagement with the 3 rd Sector They know their clients Communicate well Go above and beyond for clients
WORKING WITH YOUNG PEOPLE THROUGH SCHOOLS & YOUTH GROUPS (12-25) AS VOLUNTEERS AND VIA SALTIRE AWARDS 16 x High Schools Dalbeattie ***** Stranraer Academy * Castle Douglas *** Douglas Ewart * Kirkcudbright * Langholm Academy *** Dalry Lockerbie Moffat ** Annan St Joseph s *** Dumfries Academy * Sanquhar * Dumfries High School Max High Wallace Hall Academy * THIRD SECTOR DUMFRIES & GALLOWAY Various Third Sector Youth Groups Varies depending on contacts / relationships / capacity GIRFEC Awareness raising for some groups i.e. uniformed groups Presentation to Head Teachers Dec 2013 Action to follow up with individual schools already taking place some better received than others Indirectly with children via work with Third Sector groups delivery serviced with/for/to children and young people CLD Teams Youth Work Dumfries / Oasis Centre ***** Langholm *** (linking to High School) Wigtownshire Peer Education Groups ***** Other teams very limited, dependent on individual contact or team capacity/will Some positive, some negative No partnership working, no responses
SOCIAL SERVICES At times good partnerships. However, at times not seen as equal partner e.g. not always included in child plan at meetings, despite being consistent person in life of family. Mainly Positive. HEALTH Positive Experience. EDUCATION Fairly Positive. However, due to resources cannot always meet unrealistic expectations e.g. more frequent visits etc. Recognition of limited resources e.g. Staff numbers, Staff multi-tasking do not have a huge organisation behind us, we do it all e.g. Staff management, funding, coalface working, admin etc. W e are busy! Presentation to parents e.g. Dental Health Advice / Guidance Liaise re families Child Planning Referrers Referral Teacher HEALTH HOME-START WIGTOWNSHIRE SUPPORTING FAMILIES WITH AT LEAST ONE CHILD UNDER 5 EDUCATION Health Visitors Midwife School Nurse Smile Project Lets Cook Social Work Student SOCIAL SERVICES Social Worker Family Support Worker Educ. 7 Relationships good with Health, School s and Children s reporter across the Region. SW / (practice level) poor communication, if any at times. Do not respond in a timely manner. Meetings cancelled and re-arranged at very short notice. Families and organisations at times do not know who holds cases. Dumfries is more of an issue than Annan. ARG Education Steering Group Education Department Schools Children FUTURES Annan Dumfries Stranraer ABERLOUR EU G2G Nursery Health Visitors Steering Group rep. Health. SW. 8 The main purpose for all of the above is to get it right for every child / young person we are involved with and in order to do this we need to communicate and share the correct / relevant information to get it right. Positive and suitable referrals are made Inform school who young carers are but not allows share of with appropriate staff Established drop-in some secondary schools (works well for pupils/young carers and staff) Positive links with all schools across regional area EDUCATION Ask about suitability of involvement Very welcoming of our service Make referrals Discuss cases / concerns 3 rd Sector need - Recognition - Inclusion - Specialism in what they deliver put to use - Information sharing Joint visits have taken place Information sharing can be very good to allow joint working SOCIAL WORK Short notice to meetings YOUNG CARERS PROJECT D&G CARERS CENTRE NHS COUNCIL Youth Work services Not included at all levels Not everything is negative need to remember this Individual workers all work differently and sometimes consistency is what s required. Not precious about our own organisations, sign post and work together. Involved across the board with NHS services e.g. school nurses, CAMHS, GPs/Drs, hospital etc. Information sharing can be restricted Referrals come in from some areas Limited referrals from adult services but children in family
