Richard s Reflections 22D Start Your Engines Volume 1, Issue 11 Dedication to Service My Fellow Lions, Lionesses and Leos although my tenure will soon be ending I still have a lot to say. We are certainly having beautiful weather. Praise the Lord! Recently I have been on the road traveling to Charter Night Celebrations and enjoying them immensely. These are joyous events, which gives our Clubs the opportunity to relax, reflect on their accomplishments for the year, enjoy a delicious dinner and pass out awards for a job well done. It is a great way to celebrate. The Clubs that have held Charter nights this year have been Delmar, Claymont, Wilmington Manor, Brookside, Newcastle and Laurel. Dewey is celebrating On June 6 th. For the Clubs who have not had a Charter Celebration in the last two years, please consider scheduling one for next year. The Celebrations are great! Fellow Lions, our membership is moving in a positive direction. As of April 30 th we are showing a negative 2. For this lion s year we have lost 95 lions and gained 93. Not bad, but not where we want to be. We want to have a positive membership. Our total membership for the District is 1,297. I want to thank you all for helping to strengthen our membership. If you have any potential members to install, please call on me and I will come a running to install them. As you know, our Lion s year does not end until June 30 th. The National Memorial Day parade, which is sponsored by the America Veterans Center, will be held in Washington D.C., Monday May 27 th. Multiple District 22 has been invited to participate. This is the eighth year for the parade in which we lions have taken part. Please contact DG Richard for a parade registration form. We plan to establish a carpool to join the parade in Washington D.C. Please come and join us. Kudos to Lions Randall and Joann Friend for doing a great job hosting The Spring Fling aka The Winter Social. As always the dinner was great and the entertainment was very entertaining. The Dummy Act was hilarious and the young guitarist and singer did a great job. The greatest thing was we made money on the dinners. We were able to pay our bills without a silent auction. Now that was great. Thank you Lions Joann and Randy! My fellow Lions, Lionesses and Leos my tenure as District Governor will end in less than two months. I want you to know how much I enjoyed the year. Yes I worked hard, made some mistakes and I learned so much. The knowledge and experience gained are invaluable. None of this could have happened without you my fellow Lions. I thank you for your hard work and the friendliness you extended to me and my cabinet. A very wise and highly respected Past District Governor (PDG) told me recently Richard you are District Governor only once but you will be a PDG forever. I will also work hard as a PDG. My fellow Lions, Lionesses and Leos stay safe. 2 Clubs News in District 22-D Brookside Lions Club A proclamation from the State of Delaware was presented by State Representative Ed Osienski to Lion Don Godfrey marking Lion Don's 55 years as a member of the Brookside Lions Club and for his many contributions to both the club and community. District 22-D Governor Richard Merriwether, a member of the Rehoboth Lions attended the presentations. See picture below. Submitted by Lion Bill Dierks Lion Don Godfrey of the Brookside Lions Club holds a plaque he received from KL Bill Dierks (standing in back) at the clubs Charter Party on April 29 th. Capitol City Lions Club We are still collecting food stuff. We received over 18 pounds during March. I have a lot more space in my trunk. We also collected 163 pairs of used eyeglasses for recycling during March. Also during the month, our Lions helped 5 individual with examination/glasses which totaled $685. Claymont Lions Club April was one of the busiest months of our year. We had two interesting programs at dinner meetings. At the first, we presented Rob Coupe, Retired Delaware State Police Superintendent, with our 17 th Annual Humanitarian Award. Congratulations to Colonel Coupe. During the second meeting, we honored six students from our service area for outstanding academic and activity achievements during their high school years. Congratulations are extended to Kody Hogue and Aliyah Hodge of Delcastle Technical High School; and Sara Bristol (St. Elizabeth H.S.), Nicholas Gutsche and Nicole Morten (Charter), and Emily Spor (Concord H.S.). They are most deserving of our recognition. Lion Harry Grandel is contributing bar soap, shampoo, hand cream, toothpaste, tooth brushes and shaving cream for needy families to the Claymont Community Center. He asks that other Lions making similar contributions bring the items to a Lions dinner meeting. He will see that they get to the Community center. Our Spring Pancake Day on Saturday, April 6 th was another club success. Our Pancake Day Committee Chair Lion Fred Powell extends special thanks to President Tom DiCristofaro, Mike Elder and other Claymont Fire Company members for their assistance and support of the event. The club recognized its founding in 1938 by setting ticket prices at 75 cents per meal (usually $6 per adult). A total of 868 meals were served. While club members anticipated a negative financial settlement once all expenses were met, Treasurer Lion Dick Gackenbach reports the breakfast and related activity actually turned a profit of $1,012. The 50/50 Raffle brought in $479, the Bake Sale $309, and the Birthday Books donated by Lion Al Vitiello brought $260. A Billboard giving recognition to the 75th anniversary of the Claymont Lions Club has been posted on Philadelphia Pike just north of Harvey and Grubbs Landing Roads, across from Arby's Restaurant. The sign recognizes community support of Claymont Lions Club activities over the years. It is sponsored by Eagle One Federal Credit Union of Claymont (new facilities are being built adjacent to the Claymont Fire Station). The club thanks Branch Manager Terri Kelly for providing this form of recognition. See picture on page 10. Our Spring White Cane Days, Chair Frazier Van Velsor reported income of $3,011 for the four-day activity. We had 40 Lions and one non-lion who provided coverage for 59 assignments, during 35 shifts, at 4 locations, over the 4 days. The club extends appreciation to proprietors at Dunkin Donuts/ Naaman's Road, Dunkin Donuts/ Phila. Pike, Super fresh Claymont and the Dollar Store Claymont. Dover Lions Club Our club raised $307 at our White Cane day at ACME. Our last White Cane Days for this Lions Year was on May 17 th and 18 th at the Safeway. As for Dover Days our club had a very successful day all items sold out and our club made almost $1,400. Fenwick Island Lions Club This year our club will be awarding a total of seven scholarships. We will be giving the traditional $4,000 scholarship named in honor of the long serving chairman of the Scholarship Committee Lion John Furlow, a $1,000 scholarship in the name of the Club s founder PDG Noble Simpson, and five additional scholarships each for $1,000. The decision to award this many was in recognition of the club s sound financial footing, as well as the board s desire to help as many young folks as possible. It should be noted that this year we have received donations of over $1,200, earmarked for scholarships to honor, or in memory of, different individuals. Lion Fran Pretty has once again organized our scholarship efforts with the school. This year we received thirteen applications from Indian River High School seniors vying for the scholarships. The committee uses criteria that consider academic standing, financial need, community service involvement, extracurricular activities and ability to communicate. LEO Club membership and active participation definitely weigh heavily in the applicants favor. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at the high school, which is scheduled for the evening of May 20 th. 2

Frederica Spring Creek Lions Club Our Beef and Dumpling Dinner on April 13 th chaired by Lion Donna Salerno was very well attended. We sold 54 Take outs and 102 Dining Room meals plus 2 children. Many Lions from 22-D came after they finished Leadership Training at Polytech as well as many people from the community. Our Club celebrated turning 21 on April 15 th at our Dinner Meeting. We had a great meal and fun that night. The highlight of the evening was when Lion Sheila announced our Lion of the Year Lion Janet Brown! She was truly surprised see picture below. From L-R: ;LOY Janet K. Brown & Lion Sheila Our last day for RAP at LF East was April 26 th. A HUGE thank you to all that have helped with this project and we start up again in the fall. Glasgow Lions Club Lion Nelson Freidly was honored at our April 2 nd club meeting for his 50 years of Lions service commemorated on April 1 st (and that s no April fool joke). DG Richard had previously presented Lion Nelson with his 50 year pin from Lions International. We had a cake and his Lion sponsor of 50 years ago, Lion Bob McAlpine, attended the celebration. See picture below. L-R: Lion Bob McAlpine, Mrs. McAlpine, 50 years Lion Nelson Freidly, King Lion Mark Freidly Harrington Lions Club Our club had another Harrington Lions Quarter Auction on May 18 th at the Farmington Fire House in Harrington. Greenwood Chicken Bar B Q will be on Friday, July 12 th See one of our Lions for details. Delaware State Fair is coming on July 18-27!!! Our Lions will be driving the shuttle again this year. Fair opens on Thursday (July 18 th ) at noon. Hockessin Lions Club Medical equipment - A donation of a wide wheelchair was received during April and 1 wheelchair was loaned out. Eye screenings - On April 16 th Lions Al Pellegrini, John Farr, and Ed Rohrbaugh screened at Ebeneezer Preschool and All My Children in Newport. On April 29 th, Lions Bob Straub, Al Pellegrini, John Farr and Mark Oliver screened at Kinder Care on Cash Mill Road. A new wireless system has been purchased by Wilmington Manor and by Brookside. We will receive training on this and resume screenings later in the year. Laurel Lions Club Our Lions have been very active lately. First, was the show, "Seasonal Greetings from the Laurel Lions" with show director, 1stVP Lion Galen Queen. Big thanks go to him for a job well done. It was well attended, and we heard many good comments about the show. We had fun and enjoyed presenting this to the community. Thanks to Lion Galen and all of those that helped in any way to make the show a success. We had our after show party at the Laurel Pizzeria. It was well attended and the food was delicious. We also joined in celebrating Lioness President Edna Millman's birthday with a cake. The Laurel Lioness did a great job with the concession stand for the three nights of the show. The Leader Dog Banquet at the Cheer Center in Georgetown was attended by nine Lions. The speaker, Linda McLane, accompanied by her dog, Disney, gave a very interesting speech on Growing the Dream. The program was very good, and the food was good. Second VP Lion Barry Munoz did a great job with My Turn to Cook dinners. We sold about 110 dinners. We could have done better if more Lions had participated. We had about 20 Lions that sold tickets. Our Charter and Awards Night was on May 11 th at the Laurel Fire Hall. This is the event in which to honor charter members for starting the Laurel Lions Club, and to honor those Lions who have been selected to receive awards. Finally, a large group of Lions attended the Lions Convention in Ocean City May 13-16, Where we met new Lions, learned more about Lionism, and enjoyed good food and fellowship. We were also there to support our great Lion 2VDG Cheryl Jones. Delegates at the convention were: KL Ron Scott, 1stVP Barry Munoz, 2ndVP Pat Disharoon, 3rdVP Shirley Scott, Membership Chairperson Susan Munoz, SVDG Cheryl Jones, and alternate PDG Bob Jones. Our next great event will be "Fishing for Sight" on June 8 th. Lion Fred and Lion Pat Disharoon have worked hard on this, and we hope it will be a big success. Continue on page 4 3

Lewes Lions Club Lewes Lions Community Improvement Project committee members met on Thursday, March 23 rd to stuff, address and mail 100 envelopes to solicit funds to refurbish our local parks with benches, picnic tables, trash cans and grills. We hope to eventually refurbish all our parks. We presently have made a good start with George H.P. Smith Park at Blockhouse Pond which is at the intersection of Johnson, Park and DuPont Avenues. Lord Baltimore Lions Club We are coming into a busy time of the year, not only for the entire community as they prepare for the summer tourist season, but also for our club as we get ready for our biggest fund raising activity the car raffle. While all the vacationers may crowd our streets and take up the parking spaces, they certainly can help us by increasing the number of potential purchasers for our raffle tickets. Of course, the other key to having a successful car raffle is having full participation by all our members, not just a few. This is not a difficult activity. It mostly involves sitting, talking, and collecting money. And if we have many of our members helping out, then no one will have to spend successive weekends selling chances. I don t need to stress that the money we raise from this one event goes a long way in supporting our club activities. We came a little too close this year to possibly losing this activity as a funding source. Now that we have had it restored, we need to really work to show how much we value this event for our club s finances. Actually, I think there are some summer folks who consider the car raffle part of their annual vacation tradition. I know in selling tickets last summer, I had a number of people comment that they were glad to see us again. Our Annual Yard & Bake Sale - will take place on Saturday, June 8 th at Hocker s Supercenter parking lot. Our Annual Chicken Dinner will be on Saturday, August 10 th at the Millville Fire Hall in Millville off highway 26. Middletown Lions Club Our club fundraisers are approaching fast; our first event will be on July 7 th Rod Run, followed by the Peach Festival in August. Our club will be making about 100 crab cakes for the Rod Run and selling Soda and water. We were able to take the eyeglass cases that were filled with toiletries to the Sunday Breakfast Mission last month to be given out to the large homeless population in Wilmington. Lion John and our KL Lois gave about 75 T-Shirts to the shelter too. Lion Dennis collected 129 pairs of eyeglasses from our various collection boxes in May. Our eye screening equipment has been repaired and calibrated at a cost of $355, and we scheduled to prescreen the children from May 13 th to May 16 th at Green Acres Preschool in Odessa. Millsboro Lions Club Our Charter night was held on April 23 rd at Irish Eyes in Lewes with 26 Lions and their guests in attendance. Laurel (our sponsoring club) was there - with KL Ron Scott and Lion Shirley Scott. Our guest speaker was PDG Charles (the Rev) Covington for the night. Also in attendance were our good friends IPDG Ken Chew and his wife, Lion Marie. The Rev gave us some pointers on how to be a good club. We are doing many of them - but we can always do more! One of the items we do so well is to have speakers - including some from our own club - at our meetings. At our April 9 th Lions dinner meeting, Lion Don Ward shared some of his 'finds' with us - including items from his trips abroad, and items from around Millsboro! Milton Lions Club Our club made a donation of $500 to Florence Mason Cheer Nutrition Program Director. This donation was an earmarked for Milton Meals on Wheels. KL Ed and Lion Delores Springer know firsthand the need for funding as they have been volunteers for Meals on Wheels in Milton for over five years. In that short span of time their route has doubled. See picture below. From L-R: Florence Mason, KL Ed and Lion Delores Springer Our club is having a Pancake Breakfast fundraiser on Saturday, May 25 th. See our ad on page 12. New Castle Hundred Lions Club On a cloudy, cold and threatening Easter Sunday afternoon our club held its annual Easter Parade on the Green. Lion William Bull Hinton served as the Master of Ceremonies. Lions Patti K Fuller and Dave Jones served as co-chairpersons for this year s parade. Judges were Lion Mary Nash and Joanne Patchak. Parade contestants were led by the Easter Bunny, aka Jamie Lee Jaquette. Cash prizes were awarded to several categories and different age groups. Our Annual Charter Party was held on Tuesday, May 7 th at the Christiana Hilton. Rehoboth Beach Lions Club PRESCHOOL VISION SCREENING - Only five children were screened at the Healthy Kids Day at the YMCA on April 27 th. Of these five children one was found to have a vision problem. Lions Moe and Ken Pyle, PDG Jack and PCS Guyla Brinckmeyer worked the shift. All tolled we have screened 112 children. 4

THE WALK - There were around 75 walkers at the DLF Walk for Sight held at Grove Park in Rehoboth Beach on Sunday, April 28 th. Lions Jack and Guyla Brinckmeyer helped with the registration and T-shirt distribution. Lion DG Richard did the walk. It looked nice seeing those blue T-shirts all walking down Rehoboth Avenue toward the ocean. MEMBERSHIP - It was voted at our Board Meeting on March 27 th to try having noon meetings for one year. A committee consisting of Lion Joyce Koeneman and Lion Doris Taylor was appointed to search for noon meeting places. The committee reported that they visited several places but the best one is Irish Eyes in Lewes. Milford Lions Club We held our 67 th Charter Night on April 20 th. Approximately 90 Lions and guests attended the affair. A new Lions throne was presented to our KL Robert Craig, see picture below. Car raffle sales have begun. Our Club is raffling off a new 2013 Chevy Equinox 1LT or $20,000 in cash. There will also be 10 additional $500 cash prizes. The 14 th Annual Leonard B. Donohoe Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, July 15 th. See flyer on page 9 for more information. The Mid/Winter Spring Fling! I heard that those who attended had a good time. The Chip and Dales were there and provided the attendees with great entertainment. As for the Co-Chair, Lion Joanne had to adapt because Lion Randy had to leave due to an emergency call. Lion Randy's replacement, had a great time and is still receiving word about a woo-die and behind every dummy is a great woman. We had great singing entertainment provided by Sarah Garrison and guitar player Landon Jones. Landon Jones is Lions Wayne and Maxine Power's grandson. We would like to thank everyone for attending and assisting with making this event a success. A special thank you to Lewes Lions Club, and members of the Felton Fire Hall for their support and help. Also, we did a Who's Who in District 22-D. The most unique person in 22-D was Mrs. Pierson at 99 1/2 years old. The group sang Happy Birthday. Lions learned a little about their fellow Lions and all had a good time. See Photo-Show which was created by Lion Bob Pierson below. Reported by Chairman Lion Randy Friend 5

Hello all! By the time you read this - Ocean City will be history - for those who attended - we hope it was a fun experience for you. As I am writing this, I have just arrived home from an information packed weekend in Emmitsburg, MD for the Regional Lions Leadership Institute. I am proud to say - I am now a graduate of the Advanced level! Yippee! Such fun too! PCC John Lawrence managed to obtain my name bag - and it cost me $$$ to get it back - all for good cause though - LVRF! Then on Sunday - PDG Robert Jones - who I thought was my friend - was convinced to call my name not once for my speech - but FOUR times. See what things you miss by not attending RLLI - in addition to classes that can benefit you in life - as well as Lions - there is so much fun and camaraderie! We had some new faces in the basic group from 22-D Dewey, Milton and Lord Baltimore were all represented! We are all so busy this time of year - with family functions, Lions functions, and summer beginning. Don't forget those who are less fortunate. Don't forget to thank Mom on Mother's Day - and a prayer of thanks on Memorial Day for those who served. Save some dates for me please - I am doing things a bit different from how they have happen in the past - so want the clubs to have this information now - so they can save the dates, get the names for attendees, etc! First - in June you will be getting a letter from Lion Jay Wheeler who has agreed to be my Cabinet Secretary. This will be to announce the President, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership dinner on July 30 th at the Sheraton in Dover. Details will be in the letter - but mark that on your calendar! Next you will be getting a letter from Millsboro Club - inviting you to the banner transfer. This also will be at the Sheraton, on August 14 th. Be sure to plan to attend - since this is totally going to be different from before - we are planning for some fun that night - in addition to the traditional transfer of banner for the District Governor. Finally - all are invited to INDEPENDENCE HALL on August 10 th at noon - covered dish - for the first cabinet meeting. This is an open meeting - not just for cabinet members. If you want to meet your cabinet officers and committee members - this is a perfect opportunity. I hope all the PU101's have been submitted. This is how we get the information for the roster book for next year. Until June - I remain In Service because WE SERVE! FVDG Lion Mary Lee Phillips 7

Delaware Lions Foundation Walk for Sight The Delaware Lions Foundation Walk for Sight was held on April 28 th at Grove Park in Rehoboth. It was a beautiful day for a Walk. There were approximately 80 participants that enjoyed walking into Rehoboth and stopping for lunch a Grottos or wherever they wanted. There were 17 Lions Club represented and we were pleased to again have 16 members of the youth group Justified from Harrington, DE and they raised $2,511. The club with the most walkers was the Claymont Lions Club and the club that brought in the most money was the Frederica Spring Creek Lions Club. Lion Donna Salerno from the Frederica Spring Creek Lions brought in a whopping $1,050 in pledges. As of this date it is estimated that we will make approximately $8,000 on this event. DLF thanks all those that participated in this event and wants the clubs to know that we are there to help them with projects in their areas. If you need to contact us, the officers are listed in the District Roster book. 8

This bill board is on Philadelphia Pike just north of Harvey Rd in Claymont, DE. Picture was taken by Lion Bob Pierson Diabetes Corner: Why do I have leg pains when I walk? Sore muscles can hurt when you walk, but pain can also be a symptom of poor circulation. If you have diabetes or other cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure, your doctor should evaluate the pain. You may have intermittent claudication or poor blood flow. Intermittent claudication feels like cramping or aching. The pain occurs because blood vessels leading to the lower leg have narrowed, and the muscles cannot get enough blood. The pain usually occurs after you walk a short distance. Your physician may recommend that you walk until you begin to feel pain, stop to rest, and walk more. You gradually increase the distance walked and improve circulation to your leg, relieving the pain. Leg pain can also be due to sore muscles. If you are out of condition and try to walk quickly, you may feel discomfort in your legs. You may be stretching muscles that are not used to stretching. If you run or exercise vigorously, you can get shin splints, or tendonitis on the front of the lower leg. Walk more slowly or do a different activity for a few days until the soreness goes away. 10
