1 Richard s Reflections 22D Start Your Engines Volume 1, Issue 9 Dedication to Service Hello, Fellow Lions, Lionesses and Leos: Spring is in the air. Before I became District Governor I never realized how fulfilling the job would be until I actually started to travel up and down our First State visiting our Clubs. I have met many Lions, Lionesses and Leos who give their time and other resources building ramps, serving meals on wheels, doing pre-school eye screenings, planning Christmas Parties for those with eye impairments, tutoring and the list goes on and on. We don t look for a pat on the back. We serve because we care. Our Lions Union thanks you for your service. Also, thank you for supporting DLF, LVRF, LD, LYF, and LEBDV. I m sure I missed some of the acronyms that IPDG Ken spoke to us about last year. I just wanted to thank you for your generous support of all our acronyms. This is the time of year when there is something going on almost every night. Many Club Charter Nights have been scheduled. All events are very important and we should try and make as many as we can. Fortunately, for me I only have one more Lions Club visitation to make, which is my club Rehoboth Beach. This will remove some of the constraint on my time. The visits were great. I want to thank all of our clubs for the hospitality they extended to me and my cabinet during our visits. Last month I mentioned my goal for membership this year is a net gain of nineteen members. As of today I am at a net loss of seventeen members. I am still hopeful. Lions tune up your recruiting skills. With the last minute push to recruit Lions for the basic and advance classes at the MD 22, Regional Lions Leadership Institute (RLLI), we recruited fifty three lions for the basic course and twenty three for the advance course.the classes are scheduled May 3 rd to 5 th at Emmitsburg. Gee! Lions we must stop waiting until the last hour before committing ourselves to attend these very important Lion events. We must do better. Our District has been asked to join the other Lions of MD-22 to participate in the annual Lions Parade, which will be at the National Mall, in Washington, D. C. May 27 th, starting at noon. See the advertisement is in this month s bulletin advertisement section, giving details about the parade, along with a registration form. The advertisement is entitled National Memorial Day Parade. This is a big event. I plan to attend, Please sign up early. The Delaware City Lions Club is working hard in strengthening their club. They have the potential to recruit two new members. At the next meeting three Lions from Claymont and two from Clayton plan to visit. This sounds encouraging. They are making progress. My fellow Lions, Lionesses and Leos, check your calendars. There are several important events coming up in the next three months. Attend them all if you can. Leader Dog and the MD-22 Convention should be checked as must attend events. It is time to send in your Convention Registration Forms. Again, Thanks for all of your hard work. Until next month. 2 Clubs News in District 22-D Brookside Lions Club Our club lost one of our dearest members last month. Lion Bob Agnor, a fifty year member of our club, passed away after a long illness. Shirley Agnor thanked everyone for their prayers, visitation and correspondence. Our club had a moment of silence to honor and remember our old friend. Brookside will give $50 donation to Lions Eye Bank of DE in his memory. sitemaker/sites/spicer1/obit.cgi?user=924371agnor. On a much happier note, our club inducted our newest member, Catherine Newman, at our dinner meeting on March 4 th. Welcome Lion Catherine! Chances on two tickets to next year s Super Bowl are available for all Lions Clubs of Delaware to sell at $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00. The winner can take $1,000 in cash in lieu of the tickets. Next year s game will be played at the Meadowlands in NJ. All clubs in 22-D are invited to participate in this fundraiser. Any club that sells tickets can keep half the money. To get your tickets, King Lion Bill Dierks (billyd6540@juno.com) and the ticket order will be filled. The drawing will take place in December at the Governor s Ball, so there is plenty of time to sell tickets. Seat location is not available at this time, but once announced by the NFL, information will be distributed to any club desiring tickets. They should be good seats! Claymont Lions Club The Charter Night Committee of Chair Steve Hallsted, Carol LeCates and Marie Chew are making final preparations for our celebration of 75 years of Service to the Greater Claymont area with our Charter Night dinner and program scheduled for Wednesday, March 27 th at the Waterfall. United States Representative John Carney, a Claymont native, will speak during the program. Several Claymont Lions will be honored with the presentation of Melvin Jones, Ralph Helm, James McCarty and Lion of the Year Awards. Perfect attendance and years of club membership will also be recognized. See our ad on page 20. Our February 16 th Pancake Day was a great success with a total of 442 meals served and about $2,600 earned. This exceeded that raised from the 2012 Winter Pancake Day. Our Spring Pancake Day is scheduled for Saturday, April 6 th at the Claymont Fire Hall. In appreciation of the support of members of the community over the past years, tickets for the Spring event will be just 75 cents each. See our add on page 19. As of Mid-February, the region has completed screenings involving 611 preschool and kindergarten children. Of this number, 132 have been referred for further testing. The nurse at North Georgetown has informed us that the SPOT is working perfectly. She has heard from nine parents of referred children. All nine have needed glasses. The parents and the nurse are overjoyed with our efforts. She would like us to consider doing other grades as well. We have made up a form for parents to give to their eye doctors and then return to the school nurse. We have sold the Zone s Welch-Allen screening device to the Wilmington-Gateway Lions Club. Frederica Spring Creek Lions Club On March 20 th our club will be holding Delaware Lions Day. KL Cathy and Lion Sue Killen will read to the children at 2 daycares in the Felton/Frederica area. Lewes Lions Club Our Lions Club is managing the Spring Fling (formerly called the Mid-Winter Social) this year on April 27 th. Lions Randy and George are working on the entertainment. There will be the usual good food served in a family style manner. Please come out and join us for an evening of good food, Lions fellowship, entertainment and dancing. Vision Screening Our Zone is investigating the purchase of a new Vision Screening Device to use to test our local children. We saw a demonstration at the Zone meeting this past month. The device we saw was a portable reader requiring a short time to focus and take a reading. The information could then be printed out for the client s family to read and take action if needed. Middletown Lions Club Our Club is doing Preschool Eye Screening during the month of March at Spring Meadow Early Care, Tender Loving Kare & Learning Center, and Beach Babies Child Care. One of our club projects is recycling hard eyeglass case holders and returning them into something useful. We are filling the cases with small travel sized toothbrushes, toothpaste, hand lotion, shampoo, band aids and etc. Homeless shelters such as the Sunday Breakfast Mission and Sojourners House in Wilmington appreciate our hygiene kits. Lion Dennis collected 80 pairs of eyeglasses in February. Midway Lions Club of the meeting KL Sandy and Secretary Mitch led the group in an adjournment song that is used at the Millsboro Lions to end their Club meetings. Membership Chairman Karl Gude (right) inducts newest club member Christine DeBruyn (center) during Charter Night activities. Christine was sponsored by Lion Jackie Tinebra (left). See picture below. Milford Lions Club Our 14 th Leonard B. Donohoe Memorial Golf Tournament begins at 8AM on July 15 th. Contact Lion Gail Wadkins-Berry at or at Golf@milfordlions22d.com for more information. We are gearing up for this year s Car Raffle. The Car has been ordered and tickets are being printed. Further details will be forthcoming. Please help us welcome our newest members Vernon Walch, Donald McDonough, Ed Niblett and Jim Weston. On March 2 nd we had our Annual Spaghetti Dinner. It was great success. Thank you to all of our fellow Lions who came out to enjoy a delicious meal with us. See pictures be low. Lion Mary Jo, our Membership Chairman, is creating a guest book. These guests will receive a brochure of the club along with a letter thanking them for visiting and hoping they will come back and perhaps join our happy group. Lord Baltimore Lions Club On Wednesday, February 6 th at Magnolia s Restaurant, our club celebrated its 67th year as a Lions Club. Attending were 36 Lions and guests for what was a very enjoyable evening. King Lion Bob Davis opened the evening with introductions. Joining us from the Millsboro Lions, our sponsor club, were King Lion Sandy Wilson and their secretary Lion Mitchell Rogers. King Lion Sandy said a few words about our much appreciated cooperation with their club and our history. PDG Bill Scott provided a short program on how the club functioned many years ago. This was followed by PDG Karl Gude installing our newest Lion Christine DeBruyn. KL Bob Davis and Secretary Lion Janet Bauer then awarded 15 perfect attendance pins. At the end Millsboro Lions Club We had a winner of our joker jackpot of $250 at our first meeting in February. The new Joker Jackpot is $28. In February, Rich Garrett from the Children's Beach House shared their mission and purpose. Our second meeting in February, we had as guests 3 of the troop leaders and 3

4 three scouts from Troop 89 of the Millsboro Boy Scouts. We have supported (as well as hold the charter) this group for seventy years! Our club is also recycling the hard eyeglass cases - at the request of the school nurses in our district - to use for the students glasses - which break in the soft cases when put in their backpacks. We made the Cape Gazette online edition with our pictures from pre-school testing. FVDG Mary Lee and Lion Mitch will be finishing up the final round at Long Neck the first week of March. Special Olympics for 18 years. He began in sports in the early, taking up basketball and bowling. Now he has many leadership roles, and enjoys helping others. He also has been married for 20 years, an accomplishment in itself. Many thanks for bringing these Special athletes to our meeting. See picture below. Milton Lions Club Wonderful News -- We had the privilege of having the teacher from Georgetown's Charter School, Steve Oscar at our March 11 th meeting. Steve gave us the good news regarding the interest of the students to start a Leo Club. Milton Lions will be their sponsor. KL Ed Springer had the opportunity of attending a State of Delaware Focus Meeting in Georgetown. See his article on page 5. Lion Delores Springer once again had the opportunity to attend the Kamehameha Lions Club in Honolulu. Lion Delores reports, this made my third visit with them and as usual their warm and welcoming hello made you feel like a member. On February 18 th they were to take part in the Great Aloha Run for various charities. So since my Niece was not volunteering this year as she was doing the run, I filled her spot. Their job was to give out tee shirts to over the 24,000 runners and walkers. This was a zone project so several Lion Clubs were present. We needed to be there between 4:00AM and 5:00AM. Some Lions prepared breakfast and after we had eaten we began getting the tee shirts ready for distribution. It was so much fun when you begin to see the runners start coming. They also had at least three Leo Clubs helping as well. The five hours went by lightning fast. The Kamehameha Lions Club has 142 members and they are a very active club with many projects. Their turnout of volunteers is rewarding to see. They live up to the Lion Moto WE SERVE. Our club will have a Highway Cleanup day in April where our members can get out and get some exercise walking and bending. Some of our Lions performed a Vision Screening of 12 children at Sell s Recreation Center with four being referred for further testing. Lion Delores Springer collected 14 pairs of glasses. From L-R: KL Stephen, Lion Barbara Spence, Dan Fields Lion Winnie Spence and David Hill. Pike Creek Lions Club Our outreach program so far this year has consisted of our usual ongoing events Bingo at Manor Care on the first Saturday of every month, Meals on Wheels every 6 weeks, and preschool eye screening whenever we have children available. This last program is run by Lion Mark and he and his team have already done two screenings and have at least 3 more planned. Our experience, to date, has been that about 10% of the children screened need to see an eye doctor. Rehoboth Beach Lions Club On March 6 th, 7 th and 8 th our Lions were out doing Preschool Vision Screening in our community. DG Richard and his Cabinet visited our club on March 13 th. Our club had a Pancake Breakfast on March 16 th at Applebee s Restaurant in Rehoboth Beach, DE. New Castle Hundred Lions Club Lions Winnie and Barbara Spence visited our club in February and brought with them two young men who spoke about their experiences with Special Olympics. David Hill told us how he couldn t speak to anyone when he was nine, spent 11 minutes talking about his past years in the organization. He is a strong athlete. David lifts over 500 pounds and has won many metals. He also said he has many friends and participates in lots of events. David thanks Special Olympics for keeping his body strong and his mind sharp. Their second guest was Dan Fields. Dan has been in 4

5 Lions Eye Bank of Delaware Valley Eye Bank President/COO Jim Quirk was appointed by Delaware Governor Jack Markell to serve on the state s Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Board. This is Jim s third term on the board and the appointment will last until Representatives from Organ, Eye and Tissue banks worth with representatives from various state departments, including the Department of Health and Social Services, Department of Education and Division of Motor Vehicles. A physician, transplant recipient and family member of a donor are also invited to sit on the board. The Board works together to raise donor awareness in Delaware and increase the number of registered donors in the state. In addition, the Board is tasked with awarding grants from the Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Trust Fund to support programs aimed to increase organ, cornea and tissue donor awareness in the region. Jim Quirk receives his Commission after subscribing to the Oath of Office at the Recorder of Deed's office. Patricia Orona works in the Kent County Recorder of Deeds office. Reported by Kacey O Connor. See picture below. From L-R: Patricia Orona & President Jim Quirk State of Delaware Focus Meeting I was invited to a focus group meeting being held by the State of Delaware Health and Social Services to discuss what the community needs are in the Georgetown area. Others in attendance were representatives from area Churches, Delaware Tech, Wilmington College, Sussex Tech High School and County Social Service representatives. During the round table discussions the State Representative stated they did not know we (Lions) have a Med Shack and loan out supplies at no charge. They were also impressed by the fact we do eye screening and provide glasses and hearing aids to children in need and some adults. They did not know that we build handicap ramps (55 to date) at no charge to those who qualify. I explained how it is a zone project. When the State completes all of the focus group meetings there will be a follow up to proceed with a plan of action where the most help and good can be done. What this meeting highlighted to me, is that as Lions we are not getting the word out of all that we do as Lions. I am pleased to have been included as the only non-profit and hope this will help spread the word within the State Offices in Sussex County. Submitted by: KL Ed Springer Milton Lions Club 5

9 Diabetes Corner: I have type 2 diabetes and I worry about other family members getting it. Is there any way it can be prevented? A recent study was conducted using people who were overweight and had a condition called Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT), sometimes called pre-diabetes. People with IGT have high blood glucose levels but not high enough to be called diabetes. About half of all people with IGT eventually develop type 2 diabetes. There were 3 groups. One group received coaching in a healthy lifestyle designed to help them lose weight. Their goal was to be active (for most, this meant walking) 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, and to lose 7% of their weight and keep it off. The 2 other groups took pills. One group took a medication called metformin (Glucophage) and the other group took placebo pills that looked just like the metformin but had no active medication. The results of the study were impressive. People in the group who made lifestyle changes were 58% less likely to develop diabetes during the study than the people in the placebo medication group. Metformin also helped prevent diabetes during this study, but it was only half as effective as lifestyle changes. So, yes, it is possible to prevent diabetes, though we don't know for how long.
