Richard s Reflections 22D Start Your Engines Volume 1, Issue 2 Dedication to Service Fellow Lions, Lionesses, and Leos I like my job as District Governor. It does present many challenges, but with your help, all will go well. Not a day passes when I am not thinking of how to move our District and our entire Lions Association forward. The Banner Transfer was a great way to start. We had 201 Lions and guests present. Our success this year, as in other years, will depend greatly on our leadership and membership. I think we have had a break through on leadership. Council Chair Ralph Schieferstein, the District GLT Coordinator has identified several emerging leaders. Some of these potential leaders are members of my cabinet and I am grateful. I hope the Lions who are interested in becoming leaders continue to step up because we need you. Our membership continues to be a challenge especially for clubs in the United States. We lost the Holloway Campus Club last year, causing us to fall one below the Lions Club International requirement of having 35 clubs to be a viable District. If you have any ideas of how to gain a club let us know. We may have to act soon. I have set a net gain of 19 Lions this year. For every Club that has a net gain of 3 Lions I will give an award. Also, I ask Club officers and District Governor Teams to identify Clubs for the Club Excellence Process (CEP) and the District Governor Team Excellence Award. International President Wayne Madden s theme In a World of Service covers all of Lionism. As I have said before it is all inclusive, it covers the universe. This includes membership, leadership, Reading Action Program (RAP), Lions, Leos etc.. Of course, you will make periodic pit stops to make necessary adjustments to win the race. RAP is a program which helps our citizens to improve their reading and at the same time decrease the illiteracy rate in the United States which is currently around 21 million. I plan to have this program implemented in 50 percent of our schools by June 30, 2013 and our District can earn The President s RAP Award. We must start our engines. The Leos are having a Leadership Bash at the Beach, October 6, 2012 at Henlopen State Park in Lewes, 11AM-5PM. This event is being sponsored by our District for the Leo Club Leaders in 22D. This is the first leadership training session and we hope to make this an annual occurrence. The purpose is to give our Leos an opportunity to interact with other Leos in the state and enhance their leadership skills. We will give a full report on the Leadership Bash in the October News Bulletin. I had the opportunity to take a tour of the Lions Eye Bank of Delaware Valley which processes the donor corneas for the subsequent implant into a patient s eye. The cornea is the most frequently transplanted part of the human body. More than 95 percent of cornea transplants in the United States are successful. There were several interesting presentations given, capped off by a fantastic dinner. I will start the Club Visitations in September. I will see you on my visits. Our 1 st VP Lion Steve Hallsted carried our club banner. 18 Lions were in attendance for the occasion. The highlight of the evening occurred when our KL Tom McDonough handed the District Governor s Banner to IPDG Ken Chew, who then handed it to DG Richard Merriwether, who passed it to KL Ginny Dugge of his Rehoboth Beach club. IPDG Ken Chew expressed thanks for all District Lions who helped make a great Lion Year. 3 Frederica Spring Creek Lions Club Our Club has done Preschool Vision Screening at LF East School recently for some of the ECAP students --25 children were screened and 5 were referred. KL Cathy has received permission from the principal at East for us to help the Kindergarten teachers by reading or doing flash cards of colors and numbers, and etc. with some of the students. This activity promotes Int. President Madden s theme for the year. Laurel Lions Club The heat on July 4 th never got the Laurel Lions Club down. We had 25 Lions that helped set up tents, tables, chairs, and other items. Lion Ed Kelley and his cooking crew turned out some delicious scrapple sandwiches. A big thank you goes out to Lion Ed and his committee for the great effort on the 4th of July event in the town of Laurel. We had ten members from our club attend the District 22-D Banner Transfer. We also had two foursomes and two volunteers attended the Lions Eye Bank of Delaware Valley golf tournament. Our Lions provided a handicap ramp for a Laurel resident. See picture below. Lord Baltimore Lions Club On July 18th, six Lions from our club had the opportunity to go to Camp Barnes and cook hamburgers and hot dogs for 40 Special Olympic campers. Also, included at the dinner were more than 20 counselors and junior counselors. The second 3 day summer camp for Special Olympic athletes was held at Camp Barnes from Aug 11 th thru August 13 th. Lions Janet Parham, Anne Gude, Janet Bauer, PDG Karl Gude, Pat Murray and Jack Bauer cooked and wrapped 120 hamburgers and 24 hot dogs, also assisting with cooking and wrapping the burgers and dogs were IPDG Ken and Lion Marie Chew, who joined the cook-out after attending the District Cabinet meeting held in Dewey Beach on Sunday. Two first time participants were Lion Tom Roth and his wife Kathy. Two other Lions, Barbara and Winnie Spence, who co-chair the Special Olympics committee for District 22-D attended the summer camp as counselors. The remainder of the meal was prepared by the dedicated counselors who run the three-day summer camp for the athletes. See pictures below. Six members from our club provided Preschool Vision Screening at a health fair in Seaford. See picture of Lion Jim Littleton taking pictures of student eyes below. On July 24 th, our club had seven Lions attending the Banner Transfer in Dover at the Sheraton Hotel. Middletown Lions Club Our club has collected 124 pairs of eyeglasses in June, and in July 118 pairs were collected by Lion Dennis. Lions Lois, John, Dennis and Carolyn enjoyed a delicious dinner and dessert; speeches were great and interesting at the banner transfer on July 24 th in Dover. Our annual club picnic will be on September 8 th at Lion Ginny and Lion Rick Hastings backyard. 3

Millsboro Lions Club PDG Lion Richard Cordrey thanked the Lions for helping cleanup the Lions Park on Route 24 East in Millsboro where the Town of Millsboro, Boy Scouts and RSC planted trees, flowers and etc. See picture below. Milton Lions Club Our club had eleven members attending the Banner Transfer on July 24 th at Dover Sheraton Hotel. See picture of KL Ed carrying our club banner in picture below. Our club will be having another BBQ on August 25 th in Millsboro near the Dairy Queen. Lion Jan McCarty, Sight Chair, reported July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2012 we served 60 people. We received two grants from DLF for $2,550 to offset our expenses. We received discounts for our clients from Delaware Eye Institute, the Vision Center Optical, Sussex Eye Center, and Delaware Eye Clinics. If you are a patient at any of these tell them we appreciate their generous support! Five Lions from our club attended the Banner Transfer on July 24 th. See picture below of our KL Sandy Wilson holding our club banner. Our Lions have been working on the Train Station Platform during the hot days in June and July. The train platform was completed in time for train rides on the 4th of July. This was the first time the platform was used and there were lots of compliments for the job done. We will be hosting a series of Bingo Games for Luther Tower residents starting on or about September 18 th. This should be a fun community outreach project. Rehoboth Beach Lions Club Our telephone directories were ready for delivery on July 13 th and Lions Ken and Moe, Bertha, Richard, Doris, Sally, Wes, and Tom have picked up the books. The Boy Scouts have taken over a thousand books and will deliver them and will be ready to fill in where ever they are needed. Lion Kim LeVert came from Atlanta to stuff, bag and deliver books. The Brinckmeyers are beginning delivery of the books to the businesses. BANNER TRANSFER -- What a proud night for our Rehoboth Beach Lions Club!! Our own District Governor Richard Merriwether was on hand as was our own King Lion Ginny Dugge to accept the banner from the Claymont club. KL Ginny did a great job as emcee. The club had 16 members present. See picture below. New Castle Hundred Lions Club Our club had 10 Lions attending the Banner Transfer on July 24 th. Lions Marie Chew and Shirley Pennypacker demonstrated the Eye Screening machine at last month s meeting at Goodwill Fire Co. The hardest thing is setting the machine up. Once we have that done, it will take less than a minute to screen each child. It s the goal of King Lion Steve that our club learns and presents eye screenings to the children in New Castle and surrounding areas. Our club will be doing its Art on the Green on September 22 nd. See our ad on page 15 Our club will have another pancake breakfast fundraiser on Saturday, September 8 th at Applebee s. See our ad on page 15. 4

Dear Lions, Lioness and Leos of 22D FVDG Message I cannot believe the summer is almost over! Soon some of us will be heading to Florida (not because of snowbirds - but for USA/Canada Forum!). I am looking forward to that, to meeting VP Palmer who will be the President of LCI next year, and to seeing some old friends. Heartfelt sympathies are sent to PCT Janet Brown on the loss of her daughter Kim. I was proud to see so many Lions pay their respects last Monday evening. We truly are a family! At the cabinet meeting there was mention of the website for 22D. Have you looked at it yet? And there are some upcoming events in the District and in the Multiple. The P/S/T/M dinner is the end of August, the Leo's are having their Blast the first week of October, LVRF Skeet Shoot is Oct. 20 th, and the DLF auction the next day - what a full fall we have lined up! 1VP Palmer has notified the 1VP that he is writing a book on following your dreams! This should be interesting. A quote from him recently was "The meaning of life is to find your gift; the purpose of life is to give it away". It seems he is saying something meaningful each day on Facebook. You can friend him (and me) if you are a Facebook fan. SVDG Cheryl and I will be traveling to Zone meetings whenever we know they are happening. Zone Chairs - please give us your schedule! Another part of our responsibility is to get the Reading Action Program going in our district. Many of you already have members who are tutoring people on how to read. BE SURE THOSE MEMBERS GIVE YOUR SECRETARY THEIR HOURS so it can be reported correctly to International! Also - Secretaries - get pictures of people tutoring. Food for thought - there was a Lions Club today on Facebook that said they were giving books to families of newborns at the local hospital, so families would begin reading to the child from birth. What a great idea. There are probably lots of other ideas of how we can make a difference in this world of Service through helping people become better readers. (My mother would say that is not a problem for me - she always sees me with a book wherever I go - I LOVE to read - always did even as a very young child). I leave on Thursday (as this goes to press) for Michigan and Leader Dog. So that will be the report next month. Till Then - Keep in Service! Lion Mary Lee Phillips, FVDG 22 D SVDG Message 6

Annual District 22 D Banner Transfer th On July 24 the Rehoboth Beach Lions Club hosted the District 22-D Banner Transfer dinner at the Dover Sheraton Hotel. Two hundred and three Lions and guests representing twenty-four clubs attended in honor of our new DG Richard Merriwether. After a very nice meal, a parade of club banners took place followed by the exchange of the district banner from IPDG Ken Chew to our current DG Richard Merriwether. IPDG Ken thanked everyone for their support during his year and in return was applauded for the great job he did for the District. DG Richard then took the podium and thanked IPDG Ken and his cabinet; he then spoke briefly about his goals for the coming year. Next, we had the 50/50 drawing with the District share of $263 going to help LVRF, the Governor s choice of charities. After benediction the meeting was adjourned by KL Ginny Dugge of Rehoboth Lions. See pictures below taken by Lion Bob Daniels and also watch pictures from Lion Bob Pierson s Photoshow. 7

DBE Jay Wheeler District 22-D Tuscany Drive Millsboro, DE Diabetes Corner: With dozens of blood glucose monitors on the market, how do I choose the one that's right for me? Picking the right monitor is a little like choosing a car you have to think of the features that matter most to you. And there are lots of features to choose from. Are you looking for the fastest monitor? There are some that complete the check in 5 seconds. Other monitors have larger screens that are easier to see if your vision is not good. Some use strips that are easier to handle if you have arthritis or nerve damage. Looking to get organized? There are monitors that have lots of data management capabilities, which can help you track your results more precisely and communicate these results to your health care provider. There are monitors that use very small drops of blood and others that let you test on your hand, arm, or leg, as well as your finger. So you see, there are lots of options. To choose the monitor that's best for you, talk to your health care provider. Or better yet, talk to a diabetes educator; he or she will probably be up to date on all the latest models and have some available for you to see. Wanted Your Club News Fund Raisers & Pictures From The Desk of the Editor & Publisher Please send me your news letters, pictures, announcements, and articles for publication in the District News Bulletin. Again I will need your input by the 15th, 5pm each month. Late submissions will be carried forward to the next month District News Bulletin. Yours In Lionism!!
