Arigatou! (thank you in Japanese) Wow how time really does fly by. It was a year ago that final preparations for the trip to Japan and the International Convention were being completed. It has been a magical ride since then. Getting to know you and your Clubs better allowed me to share, with Lions from all over the Multiple and beyond, what great people and projects we have here in District 5M-6. It comes as no surprise, that our Lions, Lioness and Leos are extraordinary in their SERVICE! It is a sentiment that has been shared by a number of people including our International President, our visiting International Director and from thankful persons in our communities; for all that you do for them! The hospitality you have shown and the awesome things your Clubs do have been highlights of an incredible year. A year that will never be forgotten! Thank you for allowing me to lead this fantastic District this past year! I am proud of all that WE have done! Genki de (All the Best) DG Lion Pat 2

Events leading up to May 17th have all been good for the 5M6 KidSight program. There have been numerous training sessions. There was a screening that 4 lions from 5M6 attended at the Multiple convention. There was the first ever official 5M6 screening done at Carol Mathey's Center for Children and Families in Oakdale by the North St. Paul Lions. 15 children were screened. There will be another screening done on Friday, May 19 by the North St. Paul Lions at Oakdale Kindercare with about 70 children. There will be a screening in the next two weeks in Burnsville with over 100 children. Things are really popping. Over $11,000 has been donated to the KidSight cause by 21 5M6 Lions clubs. The 501C-3 is in process and we hope to be in effect by the MidWinter so we can collect funds from all clubs at that point. The MD5M constitution and bylaws were amended at the Multiple District Convention in Bemidji MN on Saturday April 22nd 2017 to include MD5M Lions KidSight Foundation as a major committee to align with the other Major Committees, Vision, Hearing and Diabetes. This exciting change means among other things that 5M6 will now be required to have two Directors representing each district. Hooray! KidSight has now been in operation in 5M6 for one year and we currently have 5 PlusOptix machines. Over 40 have been trained at the various training sessions and 29 of the Districts 37 clubs have expressed interest in the program with either contributions or certified trainers. This incredible process has begun and we will be announcing big numbers by the next 5M6 cabinet meeting. Thanks to all involved and a reminder that I am available to talk to your clubs about KidSight. Lion Joe C Juettner, 5M6 KidSight Chair North St. Paul Lions were at MCCA member "Carol Matheys Center for Children and Families." It was the first ever 5M6 KidSight screening. Great work Lions! It's just the beginning. 4

New Park Lions and DCTC Lions Welcome A New Leos Club Lions District 5M-6 has a new Leos Club: School District 917 DCALS Leos. DCALS (Dakota County Area Learning School) Leos were welcomed on June 5, 2017, at Dakota County Technical College (DCTC) into the Lions family. The new DCALS Leos club has 20 new members. They were jointly sponsored by the New Park Lions and DCTC Lions. Their new president is Lion Michael Riley. District Governor Lion Pat Finley, past International Director Lions Mike Molenda, Cheryl Kelly, Dennis Kelly, Eileen Schirer, DCALS Leos club co-advisor Lion Brandy Boyer, DCTC Lions co-advisors Lions Erin McCrorey and Brett Kolles and several other Lion dignitaries welcomed the newest district club. DCALS Leos President Lion Michael Riley spoke of the excitement the club has for the future. Past DCTC Lions Club President Brandy Boyer was instrumental in getting the club organized. He located the right members to get the club off the ground. DG Lion Pat Finley described the new club as a potential model for other clubs, as the transition from high school Leos, to a campus Lions Club, to ultimately another Lions Club following graduation seems to be an ideal scenario. Lion Brandy Boyer will be one of three co-advisors for the club. The other two advisors are DCALS teachers Erin Sanford and Lynn Morris. Lion Brandy Boyer was pleased with the charter event. States Lion Boyer, the ceremony was heartfelt. You could feel the enormous effect it will have on the DCALS students. I feel those that were initially elected for the first executive board now see how big it was to step up and say they will serve their fellow students and community. PDG Lion David Dominick provided his legendary cupcakes for the event. President Lion Brett Kolles - DCTC Lions 5

Lions Year Summer is almost here and our Lions year is almost over. It's been an AMAZING year! We hosted our first Centennial PR Contest with 9 out of 12 districts participating. Everyone had a good time receiving their plaques at convention plus seeing who was the top winner. We are not quite halfway through our second year of this award and our goal is to have all districts participate. When I presented this event to the DGs, it was to be a 2 year activity so this will be our last year. If you think this is something that should be continued, I need to hear from you and why you think it should go on for I would need to present it to the DGs at Council of Governors which will be in St. Cloud at the Kelly Inn. (If you are interested in joining me on Saturday, July 22, let me know so I can keep you posted on details. It usually starts at 7:30 a.m. and is done by 10 a.m. or so.) After our new year begins, I would like you to scan and send me all the applications that you received last year for the DGs had asked me to compile them all to share. Attached is a picture of a cooler that comes on wheels for $24.00 at Wal-Mart. Why did I send this? For anyone who was at MD5M Convention, I had a display table with a PR Kit for Districts to have to share with clubs for their county fairs, Sportsman's shows, pancake breakfasts to show what Lions is all about. I originally put 5M3's in a tote but it wasn't on wheels and got really heavy to move. I have not been able to find a tote on wheels to fit it all. Wal-Mart has these coolers on the market right now and everything fits in it perfectly. If you have a DGE who is interested in you putting together this PR kit, then your district should pay for the cost of this item. I don't put our banner in it for I don't want to fold it. I will be reminding the DGEs, once we return from Chicago, that if your district wants a district banner that we can still order them from Western Printing in Marshall MN for a reasonable charge. I'm not sure how many of you will be staying on in this position for the next year so I want to say that I have enjoyed working with all of you this past year. I liked hearing from all of you, your ideas, suggestions and help. Our mini session at convention with the round table discussion was interesting and I hope everyone who attended achieved the goal of help, ideas and support. I will be holding this position this upcoming year and look forward to working with everyone who is doing PR. I'm here for each and every one of you. Lion Cheri MD5M PR 7

Lions, Lioness and Leos of District 5M6: Thank you all for the hard work you ve done this past year on your vision-related Club projects. Your support has been invaluable in the fight against vision impairment and the promotion of proper eye care. Lions Mary and Jeff encourage you to keep up your efforts in the coming year with your used eyeglass collecting, supporting vision screenings for youth, providing free eye care for those in need and any other projects you happen to do concerning sight. For those clubs in 5M6 that have charitable gaming operations, the Minnesota Lions Vision Foundation (MLVF) has an opportunity for you to make an impact at the end of your fiscal year. The end of June means it is time to clear your books for this fiscal year and prepare for a fresh start on July 1. The MLVF would like to appeal to you by asking for a contribution towards any of our worthwhile projects. Your end-of-year donation can help the MN Lions efforts in sight preservation. Please feel free to contact either Lions Mary or Jeff for assistance in making a contribution prior to June 30. Please make sure to celebrate Helen Keller s Birthday on June 27 by promoting the Lions cause of being knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness. Our fight to prevent blindness and promote good eyesight has been the major project of Lions since 1925! Mark this special day by performing a vision service project or by making a donation towards the MLVF in honor of Helen Keller s birthday. Share your birthday celebration efforts with Lions Mary and Jeff so we can promote your efforts with other Lions and communities. State Far Volunteer Signup. Thanks to those Lions who have volunteered to staff the Minnesota Lions Vision and Hearing Foundation Booth at the State Fair this year. We still need assistance on Monday, September 4, Labor Day, from 12:45 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. If you are spending the holiday in town, please share your time and knowledge about Lionism with those who are attending the State Fair that day by contacting Lion Jeff with your willingness to volunteer for this event. Your assistance is truly appreciated. Proposed Lions Eye Institute. Accompanying this note is an information sheet regarding the proposal Lions Eye Institute to be built at the University of Minnesota along with a letter from the Chair of the MLVF detailing our history with the U of M and describing this potential future project in greater detail. Please review this information and join all Minnesota Lions in their excitement regarding this signature project. Don t forget to invite Lions Mary and/or Jeff to speak at your Club or Zone meetings, dinners and functions. They would be happy to share the news about the latest advances made at the University of Minnesota s Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Neurosciences towards treating macular degeneration, childhood blindness and other vision afflictions, as well as the latest advances taking place at the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank. When your Club or Zone works on their plans for this next year, please include Lions Mary and Jeff and the MLVF into your schedule. Thank you all for continuing to be Knights of the Blind! 12 The Lions Eye PROJECT VISION: The Minnesota Lions and the University of Minnesota have developed a unique partnership that spans six decades. Collectively, the Lions have raised $25,000,000 to advance research in vision, hearing, and diabetes at the University of Minnesota. We, as the Lions of Minnesota, and the Knights of the Blind, are uniquely poised to generate a fundamental shift in the field of ophthalmology and visual neuroscience. The construction of the Lions Eye Institute at the University of Minnesota will create the optimal environment for clinical care, cutting-edge research, and training. For the first time in the University of Minnesota s history, Lions Eye Institute will provide a single, centralized site that conducts groundbreaking vision research, translates discoveries to patients, and trains the next generation of ophthalmologists and physician-scientists. Centralizing the research faculty with the clinicians and eye surgeons in the stand-alone Lions Eye Institute will concentrate the University s intellectual energies and supercharge the pace of discovery of treatments and cures for blinding eye diseases of all kinds. Only the Minnesota Lions are capable of making this happen. The Lions Eye the U of M will be the first major building project on campus to be done entirely with private funds, no tax-payer dollars will be used. PROPOSED INSTITUTE: ADULT EYE CLINIC Separate clinic areas for specialty care will include cornea, glaucoma, retina, oculoplastics and general ophthalmology. Patient care areas will be closely integrated with the clinical research and diagnostic center to support research studies. ADVANCED OCULAR IMAGING FACILITY Our researchers will pair state-of-the-art instrumentation with unique imaging approaches to study ocular disease processes. CLINICAL TRIAL CLINIC A new center for children s eye care will provide a subspecialty referral center for pediatric eye care and provide capacity for clinical research on pediatric eye diseases. 12

EDUCATION SPACE This space will be used for didactics, lectures, grand rounds and other activites involving our residents and fellows. EYE SURGERY SUITES These outpatient surgical suites will allow for both routine and complex procedures. LOW-VISION CLINIC In addition to a designated clinic for low-vision patients, new spaces will be designed to accommodate lowvision patients through improved lighting, reduced visual confusion, and improved safety features. OCULAR BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING LAB This lab would be the home base for experimental vision research projects. OFFICE SPACE All of the University s ophthalmology researchers and faculty will be just steps from one another for easier collaboration. VISUAL NEUROSCIENCES LABORATORIES These laboratories will be dedicated to the increasingly important field of neuroscience research related to the visual system, including molecular, cellular, and systems-level processes. Official Launch for Lions Eye Institute fundraising campaign will be in the fall of 2017! Individual Fundraising Campaign: 1+1=1+1 $1 per MN Lion per week ($50 per year x 20K Lions = $1 Million) for twenty (20) years equals one (1) Lions Eye the U of M and each participating Lion for the duration of the fundraising campaign receives one (1) Helen Keller Sight Award! Anyone interested in making a contribution towards this world-class educational, research & treatment facility can send their donations to: Minnesota Lions Vision Foundation ATTN: Treasurer 1000 Westgate Drive, Suite 260 Saint Paul, MN Please mark Lions Eye Institute in the memo portion of your check. Our goal is to create a space for life-changing research and care that brings together our talent and expertise as a world-class (Lions) Eye Institute. - Erik van Kuijk, Professor and Chair, U of MM Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Neurosciences 13

June 6, 2016 Dear Minnesota Lions and Lioness Club Members, Thank you so much for your support of the Minnesota Lions Vision Foundation (MLVF) and our many sight programs. Since 1960, the Lions have given more than $20 million to the people of Minnesota through the Vision Foundation, and every Lion and Lioness club should feel proud of your generosity. Together, your donations have made possible: Minnesota Lions Eye Bank, a world-class eye bank known and respected by fellow eye banks and medical personnel. Eye bank staff help restore sight to more than 1,000 people each year through corneal transplants. They are the second largest provider of eye research tissue in the nation and firmly believe that research is the key to eradicating blindness worldwide. Lions Children s Eye Clinic, the leading clinic in the upper Midwest for the treatment of children s eye problems. Three dedicated pediatric ophthalmologists from the University of Minnesota s Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Neurosciences (DOVN) treat more than 8,000 patients each year, assisting children as young as a few days old. Lions Research Building, a state-of-the-art facility that the Lions helped build. An entire floor of this building is devoted to ophthalmic research and ophthalmology researchers partnered with neurology, biomedical engineering, and other University of Minnesota departments to work toward new treatments and cures. Lions Macular Degeneration Research and Rehabilitation Center (the MAC), a collaboration of physicians, researchers, representatives from the medical technology industry, and Lions. Physicians at the MAC see patients with all manner of retinal problems, including macular degeneration. MAC researchers study the biology of aging and have already developed medications and techniques that are improving the lives of those suffering from age-related macular degeneration. The Visual Rehabilitation Center helps people with diminished vision remain active and independent as long as possible. Minnesota Lions Eye Surgery Center, a $4 million commitment to establish a dedicated facility on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus where doctors can perform cataract, corneal, retinal, and other eye surgeries. The center will provide better care for patients and firstrate facilities to train future eye physicians. In addition to these wonderful projects, the Minnesota Lions Vision Foundation was proud to commit to a new endeavor at the University of Minnesota. For many years, the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Neurosciences has been scattered across the U of M Twin Cities campus. In order to create some department synergy and cohesiveness, the Lions of Minnesota through the MLVF have embarked upon a multi-year plan to establish an on-campus eye institute Westgate Drive, Suite 260 Saint Paul, Minnesota (866) MnLionsVisionFoundation.org 14

We are hoping that you may consider making a contribution towards this new project utilizing any end-of-fiscal-year funds you may have available. Any contributions made at this time would be credited towards a possible naming right at the eye institute, based upon the donation level achieve during the project s fundraising campaign. As we near the end of our Lions fiscal year, please keep the Vision Foundation in mind and consider sending any undesignated funds our way. Don t forget that for each $1,000 donated your club is eligible to present a Helen Keller Award, a wonderful way to honor a special person in your community or a fellow Lion. 20 GLT Growing Leaders for Tomorrow Lion Dennis W. Kelly III, District 5M6 GLT Chairperson My fellow Lions; We have talked in the past that Service is the Foundation of the Lions House. If Service is the Foundation then strong leadership is the mortar that holds the foundation stones together. The beginning of this mortar is the annual election of club officers. A strong, refreshed, innovative club leadership team helps create a renewed environment of service at the club level. This strong foundation will also create a healthy environment that will be welcoming and challenging for new Lions members. When we look at the office of club president in our district for the last 15 years we have only had 4 Lions clubs that have always had a new club president each year. And that club president has only served for one year. We have 7 clubs in our district where the Club President has served one 2-year term with new club presidents replacing them. And one two-year term is a good thing also. And in the worst case we have 4 clubs where the Club President has served 5 or more years many of these consecutively. So, 26 clubs, that do not have new refreshed leadership in the office of Club President, over the last 15 years. Could this be impacting our ability to attract and keep new members? What message does this send to a potential new Lion? Do these clubs have an environment where new ideas are welcome and there is opportunity for growth? Possibly not. So how do we change this? To begin with a club needs a continuous flow of new members. It is every Lions responsibility to share the message of our great organization with others. Think about why you joined. Wouldn t you want your friends, neighbors, co-workers to also experience the wonderful feeling of giving back and making a difference in our communities. Of course you would because you are proud of your service as a Lion. If your club is not making a difference in your community then maybe you need to reexamine what your club is doing and move in a more service oriented direction. New members coupled with community involvement and service and opportunity to be a leader will create an environment of new leadership and new ideas and increased community service. The challenge is yours and only you can make a difference that will keep your club growing and serving. New leadership is the answer to this challenge. 20

Multiple District 5M Centennial Celebration It is with regret that the June 3, 2017 Multiple District 5M Centennial Celebration will not be happening on that date. The Mall of American (MOA) did not approve our event proposal for June 3 rd as proposed. However, the Centennial Committee is trying to secure another date in October with the MOA. The date that is being looked at right now is October 7 th. The MOA wants us to have a big celebration, which means that we need to bring in a big name singer/band or speaker. This means that we will need to find sponsors in order to be able to do this. I am reaching out to you as Lions to ask for your help. If you know of anyone that the committee can contact for sponsorship, please let me know. Also, if you have any connections to a singer/band or speaker that would be a draw for this event, I would be interested in hearing from you. 22 Every day, Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) works to fulfill our mission: "To support the efforts of Lions clubs and partners in serving communities locally and globally, giving hope and impacting lives through humanitarian service projects and grants." Since our founding in 1968 we have strived to sustain Lions humanitarian service goals throughout the world, awarding over 13,000 grants totaling more than US$1 billion, in the four key areas of sight, youth, disaster relief and other humanitarian efforts. We Give Sight: LCIF is providing vision for those in need all over the world by combating eye diseases, creating infrastructure to improve eye care delivery, increasing the number of trained eye care professionals and making vision care more equitable and sustainable. We Support Youth: All young people deserve to have an education, feel cared for and experience healthy development so they can have the chance to achieve their dreams. Through our, Lions Quest, LCIF is helping children learn to work together, make positive decisions and serve their communities. The Foundation also supports youth through constructing schools, youth centers and vocational training centers. We Provide Disaster Relief: Lions are often some of the first to arrive at a disaster to provide relief, and Foundation support is right there with them. We help devastated communities survive after disasters and bring hope by assisting in long-term efforts of rebuilding of homes and lives. We Address Humanitarian Needs: From working to combat global health issues such as measles and diabetes to empowering those with disabilities to lead more independent and fulfilling lives, LCIF is dedicated to a range of humanitarian service projects. The Foundation continues to develop and expand programs that meet emerging needs worldwide. 22

District Environmental Program District Lions Clubs: I am Steve Knudsen, Chairperson of the District Environmental Program. I thought I'd give a status once again on the progress towards the goal this year in regards to the centennial challenge. Some progress has been made since May 17 th. We have now exceeded 70% compliance. There is still time to complete a project and get it reported. In some cases, catching up on the reporting correcting an activity already reported. I am pleased to report that we are making progress towards all clubs completing and reporting an environmental project. Some clubs have even placed a picture on My LCI. Congratulations to all who have made great strides in improving our environment. We are now in the final lap and need to have a good finish. I am asking that each of you take a look at the attached status reports and do the following: - If you have not entered your club's activities, it would be a good time to catch up. Note in the status report the reporting guidelines. - Do a sanity check on what has been entered. Some projects may not really be environmental, the number of people served may have been fat fingered, try to fill in open fields, and keep in mind recycling of eye glasses and hearing aids can (As I have been told) also be reported as environmental. Additional reporting directions are part of the report. - Consider reviewing your other centennial change activity reporting. Take credit for everything your club does. As always, keep up the good work. Give the reporting side a little attention so we can show the real story of our progress at the cabinet meeting. Accurate and timely reporting puts credibility in these reports viewed around the world. Please contact me if you have any questions. I have also attached the detail going into the report, which can help you determine if something needs to be corrected. Can I ask the eleven clubs that show no activity to give me a status by June 16th? Lion Steve Knudsen District Environmental Chair 23

Zone Chairs, please forward this issue to your clubs in your Zone. Thanks. Lion Gary Gronquist The deadline to send newsletter information to Lion Kathy Dean is by the 25 th of each month. I expect the newsletter to be published on the district s website by the 1 st of each month. A link to this newsletter will then be sent to you. I know this is very short notice for the July s newsletter, but I think we can all work together and get it done. My thought is that the district newsletter should highlight YOU, the clubs and it s members!!! So, if you have any questions, concerns, or even suggestions of what you would like to see in the newsletter, please do not hesitate to contact me. I would love your input!! This is going to also be a work in progress, so please bear with me.
