3 OUR STORY Going Beyond the Pink began as two separate programs that were both fundamentally educational: Your Breasts: What s Normal, What s Not? and Thrive!. Our founding members came together with a passion to help educate our community about breast health and breast cancer. Together, we envisioned a comprehensive community education and resource center that could literally impact everyone in our community. We realized if we combined our efforts, we could reach community members before cancer is present, teaching them to be their own best breast health advocates AND we could help those who have or have had cancer explore a variety of options that can improve their quality of life. That realization, coupled with well-developed relationships in the community and an abundance of post-diagnosis resources, likes hats, wigs, and prosthetics led to the birth of the comprehensive concept that is Going Beyond the Pink. In June 2017, Going Beyond the Pink became an official nonprofit organization, operating for educational and charitable purposes under Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. 4 MEET OUR STAFF BOARD PRESIDENT & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR: KARA KENAN Kara Kenan is a technical writer, blogger, content writer and editor, and has taught college level writing and literature courses for nearly a decade. Since being diagnosed with stage-iiia Invasive Ductal Carcinoma at the age of 35 and later discovering she was BRCA2 positive, Kara has been actively involved in the local breast cancer community, volunteering and supporting events that raise awareness and funding for financial assistance for local women and men with breast cancer. During treatment, she recognized the difficulties patients face in trying to get reliable information about treatment, side effects, and alternative and supplemental options that could improve quality of life during and after treatment. Recognizing that, although a wealth of resources are available, navigating them can be overwhelming, Kara was determined to help other survivors embrace life, connect, and learn. With the support and thoughtful contributions of friends and fellow survivors, Tricia, Felice, and Christy, Kara developed the Thrive program s educational curriculum. She is so excited to share Thrive with the breast cancer community here in Southeastern NC. Thrive s complete curriculum offers wellness education opportunities for mind, body, and spirit care for breast cancer patients, survivors, their caretakers and loved ones. BOARD TREASURER: DAVID DOUGHERTY David and Tricia Dougherty moved to Wilmington in They came for the beach, but soon found a great lifestyle, community and fantastic food. Six years later, Tricia was diagnosed with breast cancer. After enduring chemotherapy, radiation and surgery as part of her treatment protocol, and recognizing their impact on her well-being, Tricia started searching for more. Is this all there is to help with cancer? she would say. Tricia, with David s support, committed herself to reading and research, finding there was much more to assist people on their journey. She wanted to make her mind body and spirit the best version of herself (thanks, Matt Kelly!); she wanted to Thrive! Over the next 4 years, Tricia was committed to living her best life, and helping others do the same. Today, David honors her memory and her passion by joining her friends to continue her dream to help people with resources and education so that they, too, can Thrive! 2

5 BOARD SECRETARY: KATHIE SEWARD Kathie Seward developed a passion for supporting others affected by breast cancer after her own diagnosis at the age of 34. She understands the challenges a breast cancer patient faces and believes in volunteering to help provide resources and support for people facing those challenges. In addition, Kathie s attention to detail and her expertise with behind the scenes assistance makes her an invaluable member to the Going Beyond the Pink Team. For the past 18 years Kathie has worked as a horticulturist and in her spare time enjoys creating glass art. PROGRAM MANAGER: JOY WADE Joy Wade has called Wilmington home for the past 37 years. She loves being involved with folks in her community in a variety of ways. She taught in the New Hanover County School System for 17 years. Since 2012 Joy has served as the Eastern NC Program Manager for Pretty In Pink Foundation located in Wilmington. During these 5 ½ years she has had the privilege to provide support to local breast cancer patients financially and through a variety of support services as a part of Pretty In Pink Foundation. Most recently, Joy has developed an educational initiative called Your Breasts: What s Normal? What s Not? (WNWN) which has already been shared with more than 350 ladies and men ages high school through senior citizen. As a certified MammaCare Breast Self- Exam Instructor and the Program Manager of WNWN her goal is to share both tactile and visual skills to everyone with breasts so that every person can be their own very best breast health advocate. 3

6 OUR FISCAL PHILOSOPHY Because of our unique and personal connections to the breast health and breast cancer communities, Going Beyond the Pink is a passion project for each of our staff members. Instead of taking salaries at this time, we ve decided to put every dollar donated to us directly into the development of our programs and resources. KEEP IT LOCAL Local funding stays local. Going Beyond the Pink currently serves the following North Carolina counties: New Hanover Pender Brunswick Duplin Onslow Columbus OUR MISSION & GOALS Going Beyond the Pink s mission is to educate women and men in our local community about breast health and to provide support resources before, during, and after a breast cancer diagnosis. We aim to be a comprehensive resource to our community by providing free educational programs, financial assistance for breast cancer related medical treatments, post-diagnosis resources (like bras, hats, wigs, prosthetics, etc), and connections to community resources. Our goal is to move beyond the traditional notions of the pink community and get real about breast health and breast cancer through education and resources. We offer a variety of exciting programs that are having a meaningful impact in our community. 4

7 OUR PROGRAMS WHAT S NORMAL, WHAT S NOT? A local initiative to educate women and men ages high school through senior citizen about normal breast health. Participants learn specific tactile and visual techniques to help them become active and proficient in their own self-breast examinations. The workshop is fast-paced, interactive, and provides potentially lifesaving information in a fun, yet effective way. THRIVE! An educational program that examines traditional, alternative, and supplemental wellness and survivorship knowledge and techniques to provide our breast cancer community with a well-rounded resource for information. Workshops consist of mini-lectures, panel discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on activities. Thrive s complete curriculum offers wellness opportunities for mind, body, and spirit care, empowering breast cancer survivors and their loved ones to embrace life, connect learn, and thrive! FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Thanks to our founding sponsor, Pink Trash, financial grants are now available to those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer to provide assistance with their surgery, chemotherapy administrations, radiation treatments, and office copayments. Grants are dependent upon funding availability. RESOURCE CENTER A variety of post-diagnosis resources are available to include bras, hats, wigs, prosthetics, drain bags, and treatment totes, as well as our resource library. COMING SOON: FINANCIAL EDUCATION A breast cancer diagnosis can be really trying on the patient s financial resources and knowledge. Our financial education program offers help navigating the often complicated language and expectations of health insurance and medical billing, and also offers participants helpful budgeting information and resources. 5
