3 Brigadier General John S. Tuck Memorial Scholarship Awards The Association is pleased to announce the award of the first Brigadier General John S. Tuck Memorial Scholarships. BG Tuck served as the 10 th Commander of the White House Communications Agency from June 1982 until January This scholarship was established by Mrs. Eleanor Tuck, his widow, in his memory. BG Tuck and Mrs. Tuck have been strong supporters of the 1600 Communications Association Scholarship Program over the years. After his passing in August of 2015, Mrs. Tuck decided to endow this scholarship as a lasting remembrance of his service and commitment to education. The initial announcement of the award was made on August 15 th, the anniversary of his death. The awardees of the first scholarships are Lindsey Dickerson and Nicholas Johnson. Each received a $1,000 scholarship. Both awardees come from strong military families and reflect a commitment to education with goals of careers of service in medicine and energy management respectively. The Association extends its congratulations to the awardees and our sincere thanks to Mrs. Tuck for establishing this scholarship. News You Can Use The Veterans Affairs (VA) Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers is a clinical program that focuses on the needs of both the eligible Veteran/Service member and the eligible Primary and Secondary Family Caregivers. Family Caregivers provide crucial support in caring for our Nation s Veterans by allowing them to stay in the homes and communities they defended, surrounded by the loved ones they fought for. Caregivers in a home environment can enhance the health and well-being of Veterans under VA care. The Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers, helps the families and veterans injured post To get started with VA call the Caregiver Support Line at This is a great first step to learn more about the support that s available to veterans. The support caregivers provide can be especially wearing on a family. Fortunately, the VA recognizes this. Benefits available to family caregivers include: a monthly stipend; travel expenses (including lodging and per diem while accompanying Veterans undergoing care); access to health care insurance (if the Caregiver is not already entitled to care or services under a health care plan); mental health services and counseling and comprehensive VA Caregiver training provided by the Easter Seals. To find our more details on the VA Family Caregiver benefit go to: homepage and select VA Caregiver Support in federal benefits under the benefits library tab. Last Wheels Up The Association regrets to inform our members of the passing of Jozef L. Hennigan on September 11, His full obituary will be available on our site, under the Members restricted area, Last Wheels Up section. Our deepest condolences to the Hennigan family Communications Association Fall 2017 Newsletter Page 3
4 Event at The George H. W. Bush Library and Museum On Friday, October 6, 2017, The George H. W. Bush Library and Museum in College Station, Texas hosted a symposium for former White House support personnel, with David Valdez, Personal Photographer and Chief White House Photographer for President George H. W. Bush, as the principal presenter. Several 1600 Association members were present. Jon Rowader (WHCA Photo Lab from July 1974 to September 1982), was the liaison and primary force behind arranging the event. The 1600 Communications Association thanks Jon for permitting use of his post and photo of the event. Jon Rowader (via his Facebook post) I want to thank everyone who made it to The WHCA Reunion at The George H.W. Bush Library and Museum in College Station TX today. It looks like everyone had a wonderful time not only with the video and photo presentation by David Valdez but the tour and fabulous buffet provided afterwards! I will make sure the original letter that President Bush sent us gets put into WHCA archives back in DC. There are so many that support the President and it needs to be preserved for all WHCA members. Thanks once again everyone for attending!!!
