2 No matter your age, a stay in hospital is never fun for kids like Finn it can be particularly scary

3 Meet Finn, a gorgeous little patient at the Royal Children s Hospital who was diagnosed with meningococcal disease in November last year. Within minutes of his mum noticing some spots on his forehead, Finn s parents rushed him to their local hospital where the medical team started him on fluids and antibiotics. Half an hour later, little Finn was unrecognisable. He was covered from head to toe with black stuff he was puffed up so much. He had blood coming out of his eyes, his ears, his mouth. His parents were full of fear, disbelief they couldn t believe this was happening to their only child. Once he was in hospital, Finn was put in an induced coma for two weeks because of multiple organ failure. Little Finn was fighting for his life...

4 2014 is an extra special year to help sick kids In late 2014, the new Lady Cilento Children s Hospital will open in South Brisbane. The new hospital brings together the Royal Children s Hospital and Mater Children s Hospital and will have over 350 beds that s 25% more than both existing hospitals combined. A bigger hospital means more patients and an even bigger responsibility for the Children s Hospital Foundation.

5 The Coffee Club helping to save sick kids For more than 20 years, The Coffee Club has been committed to helping find a cure for childhood cancer. The Coffee Club charity ball raises hundreds of thousands of dollars to fund vital research into the most devastating childhood cancers, helping to ensure kids have the best possible chance at getting better. In celebration of the new Lady Cilento Children s Hospital, we are breaking from the biennial tradition to give our full support to helping sick kids in this very special year.

6 This year, The Coffee Club Telethon Ball is going to be extra wonderful! To be held on Saturday 11 October 2014 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. Renowned as one of the largest and most vibrant charity balls in Queensland. This year s gala event will be attended by 1,200 of Brisbane s movers and shakers, professional leaders and media identities - creating the ultimate networking opportunity.

This exciting new television event will see Channel Nine broadcast live from The Coffee Club Telethon Ball, and host a suite of favourite TV personalities and popular Australian entertainers.

13 Thanks to the fast action of his parents, doctors and nurses, Finn survived his battle with meningococcal disease. But sadly the infection had already done lifelong damage to his little body and he had to undergo amputation surgery. Just a few weeks after he was diagnosed, Finn lost both his legs below the knee, his right hand and part of his left hand. Finn s next big challenge is learning to walk on his new artificial legs, and starting to climb and play again like any other little boy. Cutting-edge research into meningococcal and infectious diseases played a vital role in helping doctors at the Royal Children's Hospital tailor treatments for Finn. Finn survived his terrible ordeal, but sadly other children may not. That s why our research and treatment programs are so important... and that s why we need you.
