1 What s Happening in the O Zone January 2016 Lions District O WORDS FROM DISTRICT GOVERNOR RANDAL Happy New Year to all of the Lions across District O! The holiday season is filled with various opportunities for family, friends and neighbors coming together to enjoy food, fun, fellowship and share times of celebration and service to others in need. As we look over the past six months, the District Governor Team including our Zone and Region Chairs visited many clubs throughout the district. As your Governor, I could see the wonderful expressions of community involvement and a spirit of helping others. You do that in various forms. We look forward to 2016 with much anticipation and excitement for the great things that are happening across District O. Two of our major programs in North Carolina are our commitments to the Brighter Visions Fund Drive and Camp Dogwood. As we start the new calendar year, please remember both of these as we serve others. District O Brighter Visions Chairperson Gene Hassell and District O Camp Dogwood Chairperson Terrie Grooms are available to come and present a program. Congratulations and many thanks go to the Vass Lions Club for meeting and exceeding the district goal of three raffle ticket books per member sold (based on the July 1 membership). Please remember that we will be having two drawings at the Mid Winter Convention for a $200 gift certificate from those Camp Dogwood Tickets that have been turned in. The Mid Winter Convention for District O is rapidly approaching. It will be January rd at the Greensboro Airport Marriott. First Vice District Governor and the entire Planning Committee have been very busy working toward the event with a schedule that includes Friday Fun Night with youth participating. We are encouraging Lions to wear their favorite sports/high school/college team apparel. Saturday morning s Tail Twister Breakfast will feature magician Jeff Case. Jeff provides a wonderful enthusiastic program! We really need Club Tail Twisters to show your support and attend this event. International Director Jerome Thompson will be our guest for the weekend and will bring the Ready, Set. Grow program. He will also be conducting a Town Hall type of meeting on Saturday morning and then meeting with Club Presidents on Saturday afternoon. The District will also be conducting its Third Cabinet Meeting of the year on Saturday afternoon. Seminars include New Member and a Technology/My LCI seminar. There is also time for those interested in a corn-hole competition. Saturday night s District Governor s Banquet will have a memorial tribute for our fallen Lions, a Parade of Club Banners including the Leo Clubs, our recognition of the District Peace Poster Winner and our keynote address by Director Thompson. The entire weekend is an Opportunity for each Lion in the district to come, meet others for the very first time and share good fellowship. We encourage each of you to share in the very first Mid-Winter Convention for District O. A reservation form is included in this newsletter (pg.3) for you to complete and mail to Lion Terrie Grooms. 2 Page 2 JEROME THOMPSON INTERNATIONAL DIRECTOR Jerome Thompson, from Moulton, Alabama, USA, was elected to serve a two-year term as a director of Lions Clubs International at the association s 98th International Convention held in Honolulu, Hawaii, June 26 through 30, Director Thompson is an attorney. A member of the Moulton Lions Club since 1989, he has held many offices within the association, including club secretary, club treasurer, club membership chairperson, district governor, district public relations & Lions information chairperson, district GMT coordinator and multiple district GMT coordinator. In recognition of his service to the association, Director Thompson has received numerous awards, including the Membership Key Award, three Leadership Awards, two Extension Awards and four International President s Awards. He is also a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow. In addition to his Lions activities, Director Thompson is active in numerous professional and community organizations, including President of the Lawrence County Alabama Bar Association and member of the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce. Director Thompson has two sons. We look forward to his visit to North Carolina and District O s convention.

4 Zone Raffle Baskets for District 'O' Convention This year for the Tail Twisters Breakfast we have decided to forego the live auction and do zone raffle baskets in its place. We are asking each zone to put together a basket valued at $100 for the breakfast. Some clubs are choosing themes for their baskets, such as Zone 8's "Snowed in Survival Kit." In addition, we are asking each club in the district to provide an item or gift card valued at $20. These gift cards will be divided into 2 large baskets to be given away at the Governor's Banquet on Saturday night. 10 Page International President Pictures Capture the Joyful Spirit of Service We live in the age of video. YouTube uploads 300 hours of video every minute. You, I and everyone else are watching them. Yet photography remains an incredibly powerful medium for capturing our modern lives. As U.S. photographer Alfred Stieglitz once said, In photography there is a reality so subtle that it becomes more real than reality. In this month s special LION Magazine photo issue, we spotlight the profound reality of our service through the brilliant gaze of a camera lens. These photos illuminate the grace and beauty of our service. In a typical issue of the LION we tell stories of those we ve helped and the Lions who serve. Here we convey our remarkable, timeless impact on the world through the power of images fixed in particular times and places worldwide. Service is beautiful. It s love. It s kindness. It s charity in action. It s spirit taking flesh. It s dignity, harmony, humanity (my presidential theme) not only for those we serve but also for Lions. Our service is not in any way rote or routine or mechanical. Our service is joyful, peaceful and full of good cheer. It s quite in line with the buoyant mood of this time of year the holiday season. 11 Page 11 LIONS 2 BABIES I hope everyone had a wonderful Blessed Christmas. Congratulations are in order as one of the older babies and her mother has started a new life on their own. Please keep them in your prayers that with the training received, they will have a successful life outside of the Boys and Girls Homes. Lakehouse 1 is in the process of having another mother and baby move in. The final touches are being put on Lakehouse 2 and it should be up and operating soon. Please remember to collect and donate items for these babies. DISTRICT O CANATHON As of December, District O has collected 46 cans of food. Please help give these children a variety of food by donating food in number 10 cans and help reach our District goal of 400 cans of food by July. Your club can bring baby items and number 10 cans of food to the Mid-Winter Convention in January. I am also available to pick up these items if need be. 13 Page 13 CELEBRATE LIBERTY CONTEST North Carolina Lions are sponsoring the Celebrate Liberty Essay Contest. The purpose is to introduce high school juniors to the importance of the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and American government. Clubs are encouraged to host an essay contest and select a winner for submission to the district level. The deadline for submission to the district is January 31. The district will select a winner to send to the state for judging. The Grand Prize winner for the state will receive $250 and an expensepaid trip to the NC Lions State Convention in Raleigh in April. The contest is open to all NC high school juniors. The essay must be no longer than 750 words and must be submitted in English, type-written in black ink, and double-spaced. The theme of this year's contest is the following Thomas Jefferson quote, "I know no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education. This is the true corrective of abuses of constitutional power." 14 ENVIRONMENTAL PHOTO CONTEST The Lions Environmental Photo Contest provides a way for Lions to portray, through an original photo, their pride and commitment to improving, protecting and preserving the environment. Every Lion from a club in good standing can enter a photograph of his or her immediate surroundings into the club -level Lions Environmental Photo Contest. Entry Guidelines This year s Lions Environmental Photo Contest includes the following five categories: Animal life Plant life Urban or natural landscape Weather phenomenon Special theme: Dignity, harmony, humanity Celebrating the peaceful coexistence of species The contest begins at the club level and winning photographs will advance to the district, multiple district, and international competitions. Lions can submit only one photograph of their environment. If the submitted photograph meets all of the criteria, it will be displayed at the Lions international convention where registered attendees will vote for their favorite in each category, as well as their overall favorite photograph. The six photos will appear on the Contest Winners page and the Lions photographers will receive an award. 16 Club President Award Leaders unite people and inspire change. Change that is positive and impactful. As club president, you have a unique opportunity to change the way your club serves its members and its community. The Club President Award is based on the Seven Keys to Success and is an initiative to help you, as club president, lead your club, maximize its potential and utilize the resources available from Lions Clubs International to find new ways to serve your community. It starts with you and you can start today! Use the criteria below to bring about change in your club. Upon completion, submit the Application Form to your District Governor or Zone Chairperson. You can submit the application at any time during the fiscal year! Your District Governor will then order the award. Please allow three or more weeks for delivery. All orders must be received by June 30, The resources in bold letters noted in the criteria below are available from the LCI Website! Seven Keys to Success 1. To increase the value of being a member, host a New Member Orientation. 2. To be a club that members can be proud of, conduct How Are Your Ratings?to find ways to make membership in your club more meaningful. 3. To hold high quality service projects, conduct a Community Needs Assessment and carry out a service project. 4. To serve with family members, host a service project that includes family members. 5. To increase the number of female and/or younger members, sponsor youngerand/ or female members or charter a club that includes female and/or younger members.

To be a leader in your community, take two or more courses or seminars offered online from the Lions Learning Center or offered by your district, multiple district, constitutional area or LCI. 7. To think in dynamic new ways, conduct Your Club, Your Way, Blueprint for a Stronger Club, or the Club Quality Initiative (CEP) to identify and implement changes.
