2 PROJECT INFORMATION You will be assisting with ongoing efforts as part of the earthquake reconstruction project in Kavre, in the Kathmandu Valley. The magnitude-7.8 earthquake that struck Nepal on Saturday April 25, 2015 caused considerable devastation and loss of life. It was followed by another magnitude-7.4 earthquake to the north east near Mount Everest on 12 May. According to the government of Nepal, more than 8,800 people were killed. The effect on housing was devastating, with more than 800,000 homes destroyed and damaged. Since the earthquakes, the recovery process in Nepal has moved from the emergency phase to recovery and now, reconstruction. Despite challenges caused by political upheaval, fuel shortages and difficulties navigating the mountainous terrain, Habitat for Humanity has been able to undertake disaster recovery efforts to help families rebuild their homes and lives. In the three years since the 2015 earthquake 45,829 families have been supported with relief and shelter interventions ranging from shelter kits to permanent housing with access to water and sanitation facilities. This includes 692 new houses with another 373 under construction. FAST FACTS Trip dates: 13th - 20th April 2019 Registration fee: $200 Fundraising goal: $1,700 Approximate in country costs (including all accommodation, meals and transport): $1,000 - $1,250 twin share Registrations close: 3rd March 2019 China Nepal Kavre Bhutan India Bangladesh 2

3 ABOUT US ABOUT THE COUNTRY Habitat for Humanity Australia is a not-for-profit that works with families to obtain safe and decent housing along with the strength, stability and independence to build better lives. Our vision is a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. Nepal is an explorer s paradise. People are drawn here by the snow-capped mountaintops of the Himalayas, the allure of Kathmandu s magical temples and the promise of beautiful and diverse landscapes. In addition to building and repairing houses, our work also addresses land security, gives communities access to clean water and sanitation, provides education and training, and offers families in need real hope for the future. To ensure lasting, sustainable change and to break the cycle of poverty for good, we take an approach that is holistic, community based and focuses on empowering families. Habitat for Humanity works to alleviate housing poverty by developing long term, sustainable solutions that provide a hand up, not a hand out. Our partner families help with the building process and join volunteers and local tradespeople to build their own home. Global Village, our international volunteering program, offers an exciting opportunity for you to learn about another culture, travel to destinations that are off the tourist track and enhance the ongoing work of Habitat for Humanity. It also gives an insight into certain areas of international community development. The Global Village program is a vital part of Habitat for Humanity s work. Although the country is home to an estimated 61 ethnic groups with 125 different languages, Nepal s overall structure is dominated by Hinduism and a highly rigid caste system. Members of lower castes, women and ethnic minorities are among the most vulnerable groups in Nepalese society. Literacy rates are strikingly low, hovering at about 50 percent overall - 25 percent for women and 18 percent for lower caste groups. Addressing such inequalities and ensuring that development is equally distributed across disadvantaged groups is essential for the long term stability of Nepal. Around 41% of Nepal s population lives in inadequate housing. This means homes are often poorly built structures with thatched roofs and straw walls and are highly vulnerable to fires and natural disasters. Approximately 25% of the population also lacks access to safe drinking water and half the population are without proper sanitation facilities. Our wider community development projects aim to uplift and empower households by providing access to toilets and wells, hygiene training and vocational training. In addition, households will be supported through access to low-interest loans to improve the conditions of their houses and overall quality of life. 3

4 WHY KAVRE? Ranuki is 47 years old and lives with her husband and three adult children in Pipaltar village, Kavre. Pipaltar is a poor community of around 100 houses. The village was completely destroyed in the April and May earthquakes in Nepal. Houses like Ranuki s were made from sundried bricks joined with mud mortar. Most were two stories and simply could not stand up to the earthquakes. shelters, while they start the long process of permanent rebuilding. Ranuki says one positive thing to come from the earthquake has been bringing the community together. Before people only thought of their own families, but now they are all working together as a team. Ranuki was outside her house when the earthquake struck. Ranuki understandably finds it hard to describe the experience. She says it was a very difficult time. Four days after the earthquake, Habitat for Humanity came to assess the damage and see how they could help. Ranuki said during this time as many as eight families were taking shelter under one tarpaulin each night. When Australian Global Village volunteers arrived in September, the community was busy clearing and building roads. The volunteers joined them in using the rubble to stabilise slopes to prevent landslides and to widen the access roads so that they could bring in building materials to prepare for house construction. Each family in the village is contributing 200 hours of sweat equity towards their future homes. Some work hard passing rocks, building roads and demolishing houses. Others cook lunch and bring water for the 100 plus people working each day. Through recovery efforts, community members have been provided with temporary Ranuki is hopeful that with further volunteer help everyone will have a new house soon. Fortunately, with her unfailing optimism and loyal support network, Kim has shown that embracing your true self really can be the best approach of all. Taking her years of experience as a personal trainer (plus a wealth of knowledge distilled from countless books) Kim gradually developed her own unique approach to wellbeing and it s all about finding a healthy balance that s right for you.
