1 STRENGTHENING OUR COMMUNITY 2016 ANNUAL REPORT STEVENS POINT AREA YMCA

2 THANK YOU The Stevens Point Area YMCA is here to strengthen the foundation of our community. We do this every day in so many ways. With almost 12,000 members and participants every year there is no one making a bigger impact on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility than your Y. In 2016, we were thrilled to see tangible results that show how we are making a difference every day. Results that demonstrated improvements in the health of our members, increased family connectedness for kids and parents and a reduction in negative behaviors by our teens. We are also extremely appreciative of the many donors and volunteers that help us meet the needs of our community. We invite you to join us in exploring the many highlights on the following pages which give evidence to how we are strengthening our community! 4 THE PLAN THE Y S MISSION To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. OUR BELIEFS We believe that when we devote our full strength to the Y s mission and cause, work in partnership with others and build on our history of innovation, we can address the most pressing issues of our time unlike any other organization. We believe all people have potential. We believe active, connected families make for active, connected communities. We believe in a holistic approach to development; promoting healthy spirit, mind, and body. We believe that in a diverse world, we are stronger when we are inclusive and our doors are open to all. We believe in honoring our mission, living our cause, acting in accordance with our values, and placing the greater good above self. YMCA STRATEGIC PLAN The YMCA has embarked on a plan to transform our community. Responding to the urgent social challenges, our Y has expanded our focus and reach. We have defined three new BIG QUESTIONS to help guide us over the next few years all the while continuing our earlier work to advance our identity as a community leader, to eliminate barriers to participation as well as continuing to strengthen our collaborative partnerships. IMPACT STATEMENT We seek to engage our community to live an active, healthy lifestyle that nourishes the spirit of giving back. BIG QUESTIONS BQ1: BQ2: BQ3: Identify and address the health and prevention needs of youth and adults What is the role of the YMCA and what are the community s needs with regards to quality and affordable child care. Is the lack of facility space in the YMCA and at camp limiting the Y s ability to meet the needs of the community. STRATEGY SCREEN All future opportunities and strategies will be tested against this strategy screen. The YMCA will make conscious decisions on how to move forward based on their responses to this screen. 1 Is it consistent with the mission, purpose and impact statement of our organization? 2 Is it financially sustainable over time? 3 Is it able to show measurable impact? 4 Do we have the skills and competencies to deliver high quality services? Do we have the functional expertise to be great? 5 Is there a potential collaborative partner to make this opportunity even greater? 6 Does it meet a true, documented community need? 7 How does it affect the Y s perception in the community? 8 Is it unique to the YMCA? (Not a duplication of existing services) 9 Does it leverage our current facilities? 10 What is the impact on our current programs and services? 11 Is it environmentally friendly and a good use of natural resources?

5 YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Nurturing the potential of every child and teen We believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for life. At the Y, children and teens learn values and positive behaviors and can explore their unique talents and interests, helping them realize their potential. 87% of families reported their YMCA Child Care scholarship helped them maintain employment which helped their family unit be successful. 43 children with a learning disability experienced the wonders of camp. Timbertop Camp pays special attention to peer relations, building self-confidence and learning new skills. 25 YMCA Teens participated in the Youth in Government program, a national program that involves thousands of teens in state-organized, model-government programs. Students have an opportunity to, quite literally, practice democracy.

6 HEALTHY LIVING Improving our community s health and well-being 14 families are engaged in the YMCA s new, year-long Healthy Weight and Your Child program. This evidence-based program is designed to help obese children begin a new path towards a healthier life. Being healthy is more than simply being physically active. It s about maintaining a balanced spirit, mind and body. The Y encourages that balance by offering opportunities to learn a new skill or hobby, fostering connections with friends through lifelong learning programs, or bringing loved ones closer through family-centered activities. 142 adults have become stronger, more independent, are sleeping better and experiencing less pain through our cancer survivorship program: LIVESTRONG at the YMCA. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Giving back and providing support to our neighbors 1 life saved because the YMCA trained over 261 individuals in critical, lifesaving programs: CPR, First Aid and Lifeguarding. 200 people living with a disability built new friendships, became healthier and gained additional life skills. We know that when we work as one, we move people and communities forward. That s why we are committed to providing support to our neighbors and opportunities for kids, adults and families to give, join in or advocate in the name of stronger communities. 4,939 scholarships valuing over $400,000 was provided to children and families so they could access critical YMCA health programs, high-quality child care and dozens of other life-changing programs.
