4 Chair s Report Crossroads Care South East London continues to expand and diversify. This year we had incoming revenue in excess of 1 million pounds and our staff provided circa 70,000 hours delivering support care services to our clients and their families. However, we continue to work in an increasingly competitive and uncertain environment where the funding and contracting of personal social care services are being subjected to great change. This has brought with it challenges and uncertainties both to third sector organisations and to Local Authorities. As a result there has often been delays in the procurement of services with current contracts rolling over for a further quarter at a time which is unsettling and insecure for any organisation. As a consequence we have had to address many additional challenges if we are to continue to expand and continue to provide high quality care services as we now have to compete in a market place that may adopt the easier procurement route of letting contracts to larger private sector social care contractors whose quality and performance may be unproven in our community. Our Chief Executive, Darren Tobin, and his staff have worked hard in this constantly changing market. He has developed partnerships with other organisations in order to develop joint bids for personal social care services contracts. A further change to procurement means that often becoming a successful organisation may not secure a total contract but means that we are one of a number of provider organisations that can be called on to deliver services by the commissioner. In partnership with another network provider, we are one of a number of organisations framework providers that can be asked to deliver care services for children and young people in Bexley. We have submitted bids in a consortium with other organisations, some were not successful this year but have increased our experience and expertise thus placing us in a stronger position for the years ahead. During the year, we have continued to implement many imaginative projects bringing great benefits to our clients such as: The inspirational Supported Living project is in its 5th year making a real difference to the lives of two adults. Julie Charlton has ably led her staff during the year. I am grateful to all the staff who have worked with such energy and commitment to provide the care and support required by the clients at home and, when required, as in-patients in hospital. The Volunteer befriending project, headed up by Lynda Munns our volunteer co-ordinator, has now been running for 2 years. Over 200 referrals have been received since the service began. We have a pool of volunteer befrienders who have been matched to some of the most vulnerable older people across our three operating boroughs including support at our memory/caring cafes. We are very grateful to Lynda for arranging a fund-raiser charity band night which brought in additional income to fund activities. 10 Disabled Children & Young People s Services We continue to face particular challenges in a context of financial austerity with disabled children and young people s services. The local authority (Bexley) rolled over our contract for another year and in our capacity as lead partner we have provided over 3000 hours of direct support to over 50 disabled children and young people and their families. The aims of our short break service is to benefit both children and young people with disabilities and complex health needs, and their families. As part of our service we have matched appropriate staff to offer disabled children enjoyable experiences to enhance their personal and social development, whilst parent carers and their families are provided with a valuable break from their caring responsibilities. As a flexible provider the short breaks we provide are at different times to suit individual familiesduring the day or evening or at weekends, and are for a few hours a week. Whilst hard outcomes are sometimes difficult to evidence, feedback from parent carers through service reviews and our annual questionnaire has indicated that the service from Crossroads has enabled their child to develop and thrive with opportunities in educational and social activities whilst giving the parent carer some well needed respite and time out for themselves. Core staff supporting CYP receive appropriate accredited training in safeguarding as part of their working practices and ensure our service is person centred, focusing on the individual rather than the category of need. Through integrated commissioning (between local authorities and clinical commissioning groups) and the shift to engaging with a prime contractor to take on all children and young people s services in Bexley from 2015 there is a clear message for closer collaboration between voluntary sector organisations to further influence and shape the future of services to disabled children and their Carers Trust We were also successful in achieving framework status for disabled children s services across Lewisham and Greenwich with our lead partner South Thames Crossroads and look forward to enhancing our reach across our operating areas. The breaks we receive have been of enormous benefit to us as a family in what has been a difficult Carers Trust 8 Crossroads Care South East London

15 Memory/Caring Cafes THE CARING CAFE, CATFORD The Carers Cafe, funded by Lewisham Council and Merchant Taylors, has again performed well with many of those attending stating how much they enjoy the service. Carers attending the cafe stated they find it to be supportive of their needs as carers. They also report that the opportunity to share their experiences with other carers is one of the best aspects of the cafe. Currently the cafe supports up to 30 clients and carers, it is always open to new referrals, with 10 people using the service for the first time in this reporting period. The cafe provides a range of social activities, which service users participate in. Each activity is decided by the service users with the most popular being bingo. Other options include board games, dominos and card games. Aside from the social element, the cafe also provides peer support and advice and information; many service users gain access to information on benefits, transport and such which they might otherwise be unaware of. THE MEMORY LANE CAFE, BEXLEYHEATH The Memory Lane Cafe has been up and running for a year and is currently supporting up to 30 carers and people with memory loss/dementia to come along, share experiences, exchange information, take part in reminiscence activities and socially interact with one another. We were fortunate to receive some funding from the West Kent Masonic Lodge which has enabled us to purchase 3 ipads for clients to interact with the IT world!! During the course of the year we actively encourage all of our clients across the cafes to celebrate seasonal occasions and birthdays. At Christmas we decorate the cafes and provide seasonal food as well as typical Christmas entertainment, including carol singing and crackers. None of this would be possible without the commitment of staff and volunteers who give up their free time to support the organisation. Wayne McGruer ~ Senior Support Worker THE MEMORY LANE CAFES, ELTHAM The two Memory Lane Cafes in Eltham are funded by the Royal Borough of Greenwich and support up to 35 clients and carers but serve a different and more challenging group of service users. The cafes provide a friendly and welcoming space for their carers who allow them to share experiences and gain valuable peer support. All staff have underpinning knowledge of dementia and are mindful to the varying degrees of dementia and Alzheimer s. The cafes provide a range of support, often this will include specialist activities around reminiscing, memory recall, singing for the brain designed to enhance memory and stimulate the individuals to improve their day-to-day functioning.
