4 FRIDAY PM, APRIL 15, 1:00PM TO 4:00PM 101 Caregiving and the Aboriginal Child (Emelyn Desjarlais) (Replaces F-Series) This series of four sessions will focus on family teachings, historical and current context for Aboriginal populations, trauma and healing as well as celebrating children and families. The entire training session is done in a circle and is limited to 25 participants. 102 The Parenting Toolbox (D3) Just as a skilled craftsman carries with him the tools that he will need in order to do his work, parents must use many different tools to guide children s behavior. This workshop provides you with an overview of the five key tools that you can use for many situations. 103 Your Role on the Fostering Team (A2) While you have a critical role as the primary caregiver for children and youth, you are part of a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team of professionals. Working on this team requires an understanding of your roles and responsibilities and the roles and responsibilities of other team members. 104 Mental Health First Aid (Carey Lai) Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis is resolved. Mental Health First Aid Basic discusses the following mental disorders: substance related disorders, mood related disorders, anxiety and trauma related disorders, and psychotic disorders. Crisis first aid skills for the following situations are learned: substance overdose, suicidal behavior, panic attack, acute stress reaction and psychotic episode. 105 Suicide Awareness (E7) Children and youth in our care are particularly at risk of suicide given the history of turmoil in their lives. Whether a crisis is successfully prevented or treated and transcended depends on the ability of caregivers. This course focuses on identifying enough of the risk indicators and warning signs of suicidal behavior in children for caregivers to know when to ask for professional help. 106 Love Languages (Brian and Joyce Golding) The Goldings have been fostering over 30 years and have been happily married for 48 years and they still like each other! The teachings of this course have contributed to the success of their relationship. Join this session and learn the language of love. SATURDAY AM, APRIL 16, 9:00AM TO NOON 201 Caregiving and the Aboriginal Child (Emelyn Desjarlais) (Replaces F-Series) Session 101 is a prerequisite 202 Trauma and Attachment (Tracy Cook) The session will cover the basics of trauma and attachment issues and how caregivers can use brain based, trauma informed approaches to assist in relationship building and the creation of a healing environment. The session will explore the basics of creating a "place" to heal utilizing Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy techniques, which have proven successful in working with kids who are masters at pushing away and are often diagnosed with RAD and ODD. Traditional behavioural and cognitive approaches alone are often not enough to assist these children and their care providers in healing, and this session will discuss how attachment work needs to be approached differently. 203 FASD Session (Jacqueline Pei (R. Psych., PhD), Tracy Mastrangelo and Barb McLean) After reviewing videos and learning guides that are designed to help shift ones perspective from behavior to brain function, we will discuss the challenges of supporting individuals with an FASD. We will share our experiences, learn how to reframe behaviours, and look at ways to shift our thinking to become agile, flexible problem solvers. We will discuss how to generate more alternatives to support with individuals an FASD. In addition, we will look at ways to activate collaborative networks, offer caregiver support and discuss how to best share these resources with schools, community services and agencies. 204 Mental Health First Aid Continued Session 104 is a prerequisite 205 Addressing Allegations of Abuse (A5) This course gives practical consideration to the possibility of an allegation of abuse being made against you. It gives an overview of what you would be likely to experience in the course of an investigation. There are a number of practical considerations and strategies for dealing with allegations that are explored. 206 Managing the Fostering Experience (H2) It is important to maintain a healthy you and family throughout the fostering experience. This course will focus on your personal experiences as a caregiver. You will have the opportunity to highlight what works for you and draw on the resources of other participants to address areas that are causing concern.
5 SATURDAY PM, APRIL 16, 1:00PM TO 4:00PM 301 Caregiving and the Aboriginal Child (Emelyn Desjarlais) (Replaces F-Series) Session 101 & 201 are prerequisites. 302 Trauma and Attachment (Tracy Cook) Session 202 and 302 are not concurrent but are beneficial and complementary to each other. 303 FASD Session (E4 & E5 Equivalent) Session 203 is a prerequisite. This is a full day of training. 304 Mental Health First Aid Continued Session 104 & 204 are prerequisites. 305 Joining the Journey of Signs of Safety This session will provide a brief overview of Signs of Safety (SOS) including where it originated, the countries currently implementing/using SOS and their feedback. An overview will be provided regarding where North Central CFS is at in its implementation, the tools being used and language associated with SOS. There will be interactive activities that allow participants to explore the tools, such as Words and Pictures to provide awareness of SOS process. 306 Creating a Developmental Environment (C3) The basic message of this module may be a shift in thinking for some people: to change the environment versus the child, so that the environment best supports the child at whatever developmental stage they are at. This course explores which elements in the environment can be modified. SUNDAY AM, APRIL 17, 9:00AM TO NOON 401 Caregiving and the Aboriginal Child (Emelyn Desjarlais) (Replaces F-Series) Session 101, 201 & 301 are prerequisites. 402 Caring for Children wo have been Exposed to Sexual Abuse (equivalent to E8) (Sandra Alton) The caregiver is responsible to co-create a relationship that nurtures healing for children that have been exposed to sexual abuse. This workshop will deliver all the content required for equivalency for E8 but will provide greater insight into various abuse dynamics. 403 Managing Substance Abuse (E6) You as a parent need to understand the basics of substance abuse, and how to manage it should it become an issue with the children in your care. 404 Mental Health First Aid Continued Session 104, 204 & 304 are prerequisites. 405 Signs of Safety Session 305 is a prerequisite. This session will showcase a current case example of the application of SOS practice on a file, highlighting the collaborative efforts of caregivers, caseworkers and community supports. A presentation from various stakeholders on how an SOS approach has been different from previous CFS involvement will be included.
