4 Workshop Descriptions E: Ratings are determined on course content and the course presenters input. Tuesday October 21, 2014 A1 FASD Training (full day workshop) This workshop will provide a brief outline describing the success of Collaboration in meeting the needs of FASD in Northeastern Ontario where there is limited provincial funding for FASD. An introduction will be provided on the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure and the resulting disabilities known as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). An overview of FASD will be presented to include a more detailed look at the primary and secondary disabilities of affected individuals across the lifespan, then concludes with a glance at intervention strategies. The unique complexity FASD presents to individuals, families and communities will be explored within the broader context of the impact of this disorder on the social, educational, criminal, and financial health care system. Intervention resources will be displayed and effective strategies will be discussed to assist with people affected by FASD. The workshop will be interactive with a hands on approach from professionals who live and work with people affected by FASD. The concept of FASD as a live-ability vs a dis-ability will be shared from the first-hand perspective of a presenter who lives with the diagnosis of a FASD. A2 HIV/ AIDS & Hep C Training (full day workshop) This full day training will inform participants on key information and issues around HIV, HEP C, Stigma & discrimination, Disclosure, Safer Sex & Healthy Sexuality and Testing. Through interactive and discussion type workshops, participants will: 1. Gain a better understanding of HIV & HEP C transmission and risk 2. Have an opportunity to discuss common myths and misconceptions around HIV & HEP C 3. Discuss the impact of stigma and discrimination on individuals, families and communities 4. Gain an understanding of the legal issues around disclosure of HIV status and the impacts of these laws. 5. Improve their understanding of what safer sex and healthy sexuality looks like 6. Gain an understanding of issues around testing for HIV A3 Self- Mentoring: Navigating from the Inside- Out in Times of Change (full day workshop) Change in our lives is not easy to deal with - it usually occurs gradually, in modest increments, punctuated by periods of moving forward and of setback. And the fact is, whatever form change takes in our life, it is unavoidable (even if we don't look for change, inevitably, change comes "looking for us...). Whether change is sought or thrust upon us by circumstance, the ability to guide ourselves in the midst of change has lasting effects on our life's trajectory. In an ideal world, everyone would have a mentor to guide them; but mentoring relationships are neither easily formed nor maintained, even when they are available. Yet it is precisely in changing and turbulent times that mentoring is most needed. The alternative? Learn to be one's own mentor. Self-mentoring is a term the presenter has used over the last several years in his work with individuals in career transition. In essence, self-mentoring is the art of stepping back in order to look within and thereby navigate change from the inside-out. More specifically, it is a set of teachable strategies and skills that can help people be proactive in the face of challenge, change and transition. Using real-life scenarios as well as hands-on exercises, this inspiring, interactive and practical workshop is grounded in a strength-based, psycho-educational approach, drawing on theory, research and best-practices from diverse areas within psychology. This inspiring, interactive and practical workshop comes with a complete set of supporting materials. Participants in the workshop will learn: The essential strategies and skills of successful self-mentoring The ways in which self-mentoring differs from other change-navigating strategies as well as how it complements them Teachable self-mentoring strategies and skills How to integrate and apply self-mentoring into their professional practice How to avoid common pitfalls in self-mentoring
5 A4 Mental Health First Aid Training (2 full day training course) The Mental Health First Aid course is a two day certification course that allows all participant s to be involved in discussion and some activities. The following mental health problems will be covered in this training session: Mood disorders Anxiety disorders Psychosis Substance Use Disorder The following mental health crisis situations will be covered in this training session: Suicidal behaviour Overdoses Panic Attacks Reactions to traumatic events Psychotic episodes Wednesday October 22, 2014 The Myth of Normal: Depression, Anxiety and Addictions from a New Perspective Full day plenary session- Dr. Gabor Mate For all our progress in understanding and treating mental illness, it continues to be a subject of misapprehension, prejudice and stigmatization. The reason for that may be not its strangeness but its familiarity. Very few individuals or families are not touched by at least some aspects of mental dysfunction, some periods of the discouragement, disconnect or anxiety that, on a deeper and more chronic level, characterizes the mind state of the mentally ill. And beyond individual experience or predisposition, many factors in this stress and confused culture conduce to mental malfunction on a broad social scale. This talk will explore the causes and "normality" of depression, anxiety and addictions in our society. Thursday October 23, 2014 B1 & B 4 Stress Relief & Medicines (half day workshop run twice) Participants in this half day workshop will learn of the healing properties of traditional medicines specifically related to those that assist with relieving stress. Participants will work with the facilitator to make medicine bags filled with traditional medicines for stress relief. B2 Implications of Mental Health and Addictions (half day workshop) Providing culturally and contextually appropriate addiction and mental health services to First Nations clients requires the practitioner respect cultural values in the clinical setting while at the same time, adapt approaches in a way that reflects clients situations. This workshop will focus on how cultural values can inform appropriate treatment approaches, and will examine where evidence-based treatments share commonalities with our cultural values. B3 Hand Drum Workshop (full day workshop) Participants will be making a Cree-style hand drum that is made of pine and naturally processed deer hide. Prior to lunch drum teachings will be shared, along with preparing the frame by sanding and oiling. In the afternoon pairs will work in tandem to prepare the hide to be used for lacing of the drum. Once this is done we will ready the drumhead to be laced to create a hand drum that each person can take home and enjoy. B5 Let s Talk Prevention, Protection & Cessation (half day workshop) During the workshop participants will develop and participate in designing their own specific smoking cessation, protection and prevention workshop for their community. Through building on the expertise of the participants, utilizing visual aids, laughter and resources, this hands-on interactive workshop will help hone individual skills and enhance local knowledge to support communities around commercial tobacco use.
