1 The Knights Vision Lions of Virginia District 24-D December Governor s Message Volume 92 Issue 6 Dec 2014 Dec 2014 Blog I always worry during the holiday season, the holidays can be a blessed and happy event or they can be a difficult time and depressing time for others. My holiday wish is that we keep our loved ones close to our hearts and open our hearts to those less fortunate. Many clubs will be holding food drives or feeding the hungry in some way let s all do our part at this special time of year and pitch in where needed and support our clubs and their members, larger clubs supporting the smaller ones in helping to support our We Serve. A huge thank you to all that attended the Fall Conference! I know much was learned and the fellowship and comrade was awesome! If you missed shame on you! Of course this conference would not have happened if it had not been Lion Pam Kidwell for the time, coordination, effort and meticulous planning to every detail put in by Lion Mary Lou Newman. She went way beyond my wildest District Governor expectations in making the conference it was and made my job so much easier. Thank you Lion Mary Lou. Thank you to the Lancaster Lions Club and any other lions that offered their support and the efforts they put forth to make the conference as success. Thank you to those instructors for your dedication to help our organization grow through leadership and membership. Thank you all. As we plan projects for the next month, please keep in mind January 10-16, International President Joe Preston has asked that all clubs worldwide plan a service project during this week. Along that note, I would like to request that all clubs in Region II when planning any screening projects keep the EVMS Campus club in your plans and consider how they might be able to help. I had my official visit with them this month and they are a very eager, energetic group of young people that are anxious to help their community. They are medical students and are limited in the time they have, as are most of us, their situation is quite unique and they have some great ideas how to reach out; there only handicap is the lack resources. Please seek them out and offer any assistance you can to help this young club grow and experience the full We Serve experience. Lion Cecil Smithson is working with them and doing a great job! He is able to offer any assistance necessary. Remember, Positive Attitudes Motivate to help strengthen the pride! Lion Pam Kidwell District Governor 24D Lion Pam Kidwell

2 District Blog Lion Tucker Casanova 2nd Vice District Governor Qick there isn t much time! Come with me I ll explain on the way! No! I said theres no time, get in the car! Whew, we made it. Were you followed? Are you sure!? Sorry, sorry. It s been a crazy week Holidays, newsletters, work, more newsletters it can be a pressure cooker some times. So, imagine how happy I was when I came across this trailer for a documentary about RAM. Here, check it out vimeo.com/ Click the link or type it in your browser it s only three and a half minutes long. Grab a snack if you want, it s okay I ll wait you done? Oh sorry. Now? Powerful stuff, right? The RAM we attend in Wise County will be in July Next year from the 16 th to the 19 th Even though this documentary doesn t mention Lions involvement, and this particular RAM is in Tennessee, these are still the people we serve. Sometimes the stress gets to us and we forget why we became Lions and that it s for these people we do the things we do. That s why I m glad I recived an a while back inviting anybody that wanted to attend an EVMS screening of this documentary about Remote Area Medical. I was unable to attend, much to my regret, but I did keep it in my inbox hoping I would come across it in the future and it would remind me to maybe find the finished film streaming somewhere or commertialy avalible. Instead I found it today as I was going through old submissions making sure everyone who had something to add to the KV got their chance. This month s issue has been a difficult one. That, plus other things were really starting to build up and I was really feeling the pressure. I wasn t freaking out yet, but I was getting close. Then at the bottom of my inbox was this little time capsule I left for myself. So I wached it. All of a sudden things weren t so bad. I have problems, and they are real, but compaired to many Well, let me put it this way I was greatful for the perspective. So as we finish this year let me leave you with this; remember the people in need, the people we serve and enjoy and be greatful for what you have. Have a Great Holliday! Yours in Lionism, Lion Tucker Casanova, 2 nd VDG

7 Diabetes Prevention District 24D Lions Working Together The James City Lions Club established a goal this year to expand their support for diabetes prevention as a way to prevent diabetes related vision problems so prevalent in the adult community. The Club had a reasonably active diabetes prevention program, financially supporting the Angels of Mercy Medical Clinic s pre diabetes screening program and District 24 D s Lion s Family Diabetes Camp. But, when they asked - - is there something else we should be doing? the answer was yes. Lion Don Butts, the Club s diabetes lead, consulted with Dr. William Mann; the Medical Director of the Olde Towne Medical and Dental Center (OTMDC) to determine what diabetes prevention assistance the Club could provide. Dr. Mann explained that OTMDC has approximately 1,200 patients requiring an annual retinal examination. These patients have diabetes, high blood pressure or other conditions that may cause retinal damage. Unfortunately, at OTMDC, volunteer ophthalmologists and optometrists are only available one- half day, twice per week. This narrow window of opportunity for patients to get appointments for retinal examinations is further complicated by the fact that most OTMDC patients are dependent on others for transportation. As a result, only 15 per cent of the 1200 patients receive a retinal examination - - the key to early detection of retinal changes and medical intervention that may preserve sight. Dr. Mann explained how retinal photography would be an excellent tool in Dr. William Mann and Lion Don Butts correcting the shortfall in retinal examinations. A retinal camera would enable trained OTMDC staff to photograph retinas of patients in the normal course of care; then an ophthalmologist or optometrist could examine the digital images of many patients during the doctors limited time at the clinic. With this information, Lion Don Butts gathered information on retinal cameras and collaborated with the Williamsburg Host Lions Club and the Lions Charity Foundation of District 24D on the benefits of OTMDC having a retinal camera and on what it would take to purchase a camera. The Boards of Directors of the James City and Williamsburg Host Lions Clubs pledged funds for a retinal camera and a request for funds was sent to the Lions District 24D Charity Foundation. Working with Lombart Instruments in Norfolk, the Lions were able to acquire a very serviceable used retinal camera for less than half - - $7000 vs. $16,000 the price of a new camera; Lombart also provided training for the OTMDC staff. Today and in the future, patients needing evaluation for retinopathy at OTMDC will have the opportunity. Many patients will retain their sight because of their examination with the retinal camera. Lions working together have provided a valuable resource that will have an enduring impact on addressing diabetes related vision problems in the greater Williamsburg community.

16 Lions KidSight USA Saving Kids Sight 25 Million Kids Need You, So Get Involved Today! Lions of the USA are pleased to announce Lions KidSight USA, a nationwide program to safeguard the vision of children aged 6 months through 6 years. According to educational experts, 80% of learning is visual. So if a child can t see well, he can t learn well. Yet most young children don t get their vision screened until they have problems learning or paying attention in school. By then, it may already be too late. Unless vision problems are detected early and corrected, they risk becoming permanent by age 7. Lions in the USA already screen more than 500,000 kids per year through state-wide and local programs often known as KidSight. Lions KidSight USA is a national coalition that brings together Lions programs that screen kids from 6 months to 6 years of age in order create a coordinated national program. Our mission is to ensure eye screening and follow-up care is given to all kids because every child deserves to learn and see the world clearly. To do this, we will work with Lions to increase the number of screening programs around the country in order to reach more children when it is possible and where it is needed. The Need Is Real About 7-15% of kids screened nearly 4 million will be referred for a followup exam by an eye-care professional. Approximately 5% of all children in this age group will have amblyopia, a treatable disorder that can result in permanently reduced vision when not addressed by an early age. The screening devices detect risk factors for amblyopia, such as strabismus (eyes that cross or wander out), refractive errors and unequal vision between the two eyes, and potentially even more serious issues such as cataracts and eye cancer. Change a Life by Becoming a Vision Screener With just minutes of training, any Lion or volunteer can screen the vision of a child. Just push a few buttons and the screening devices used in KidSight do all the work for you. Screening devices even generate the results immediately for

17 easy management of screening results. It s simple, it s fun, and there s nothing more rewarding then helping a child! Three Models to Choose from It s easy to get started! If your club is not already providing children s eye screenings, here are three suggested models that can evolve over time. Remember, 25 million kids are counting on us, and we re counting on you to help make this national screening initiative a success! Beginner Just getting started Club (or zone on a sharing basis) has a screening device Club(s) has a HIPPA-compliant system to screen children at places such as pre-k institutions, Head Start programs, community health clinics and community organizations, health fairs and others A HIPPA-compliant permission form parents need to sign A HIPPA-compliant document detailing screening results that can be shared with parents or guardians The ability to provide/fund follow-up exams and care for the medically indigent, or at least a list of resources/agencies that can help Maintain a list of screening information including the number of children screened and percentage referred for an exam Intermediate Take it to next level All the above Coordinate program at the district level or by a district foundation A network of eye care professionals supporting the program A coordinator, either a Lion volunteer or a paid staff person, to schedule/coordinate screenings and support clubs with the program (parental permissions, referral and follow-up care coordination, etc.) Pursue regional partnerships Maintain a central database of the number of children screened, referral rates, and if possible outcome data of eye exams Advanced Go for the gold-standard All the above Coordinate program at the MD level and may have a university or hospital partner with paid staff to coordinate program Pursue state-level partnerships with professional eye care organizations and education associations, and seek state government funding or program collaborations

18 Share Lions KidSight USA with your club, and then get started today! Who can I contact for more information? Contact Dr. H. Hauser Weiler, PID at weiler@sylvaninfo.net for more information. Dr Weiler is the Vice Chair of this program. How can LCIF help my screening program? The Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) is supporting the development of our national program. LCIF will consider matching grants for districts where at least two more clubs are financially involved, per the regular grant criteria. Districts or MDs can apply for a matching Standard Grants in amounts between US$10,000 and US$100,000 to purchase or replace/upgrade devices and put in place other program infrastructures. LCIF has already awarded US$2,199,990 in grants since fiscal year to help districts and MDs in the USA start KidSight and children s eye screening programs. Clubs are also encouraged to invest in a screening device using local resources, including community grants and regional Lions foundations to maximize available resources. Screening device manufacturers may also be able to temporarily loan a device to a club so Lions can get started before a permanent device is purchased. How Is the KidSight USA Project Structured? Lions KidSight USA was launched by groups representing MD 6, MD 9, MD 12, MD 16, MD 17, MD 20, MD 23, MD 24, MD 25, with assistance from International President Preston, 2nd VP Bob Corlew, and PIPs Al Brandel, Jim Ervin, and Wayne Madden. MDs 8, 11, 15, 28, 36, 44 and others also have robust screening programs. A larger program committee will be formed with the Founding Coalition Members above and representatives from each multiple district that wants to be involved. Does Lions KidSight USA have any national partners? Two equipment manufactures of the screening devices Plusoptix and Welch Allyn SPOT are proud Project Partners, and both are providing generous financial support for the development of this national program. What are the benefits of a national program? Directly impact the vision health of our nation s children Establish a national brand or Lions identity that is clearly recognized by the public Experienced Lions KidSight Programs can mentor new ones Opportunities for more partnerships from eye care companies, education groups, professional eye care bodies, to local, state and federal government agencies

24 Lions of District 24D, Thank you, for all you do in our communities throughout Southeastern Virginia. Through your efforts people are getting the help they need to be able to see and survive. We are very active as a District and we have fun helping others. If we can offer that opportunity to the people around us, our clubs will thrive more than ever before. I really enjoyed a prayer I heard at Fall Conference and I d like to share it with you. 2 nd VDG Tucker s Prayer Most Heavenly Father, We may know you by many names but we have all gathered here together to do your work. Please guide us as we serve both you and those in need. Grant us wisdom, patience, understanding, and especially new members. So we may strengthen our ranks, enhance our efforts and further our reach to help those in need. When you send us those new Lions, and we know they are coming please open our minds to their ideas even if they are new, our hearts to their ways even if those ways are strange. And allow us the humility to learn from them even as we teach what Lionism really means. We thank you for your many blessings especially the opportunity to serve in your name, and in that name we pray AMEN Be a Guiding Lion Mentor to New Members and show them what fun it is to Serve Others in our community. At this time of year please offer the opportunity to family, friends and coworkers to become Lions in your club. Lion Mack Stevens - Global Membership Team Coach
