DISTRICT GOVERNOR REPORT FOR SECOND DISTRICT CABINET MEETING District Governor Patrick Laham, District 17N November 10, 2018 First I want to say how proud I am of our District. Lions Clubs International reflects 74 Clubs in District 17N. There are 1580 Lion members recorded in District N as of October 25. There are no status quo clubs at the present time, and, although each Club has it s own unique set of problems, I know of no Clubs that our leadership team considers to be problem Clubs at this time. For the year, we have added 52 and dropped 37 for a net gain of 15. For the month of October, we have added 17 and dropped 4 for a net gain of 13 members. With all due respect to my Governor colleagues in District A, and District K, I believe that I have the best Leadership Team in the MD, the best Zone Chairs, and the best Committee Chairs. This has been a TEAM effort to record this kind of numbers considering that we lost 139 members and 5 Clubs at the end of last year. This has indeed, been a Team effort. So far this year, our Leadership Team has visited nearly 50 of our 74 Clubs, and November looms large as a very busy month. Visits are scheduled into the New Year. To date, four issues of the District N Governor s newsletter have been posted and distributed to members of District N and other interested Lions. Another is nearly complete. Also, three mid-month blasts have been posted, which included timely information for the membership.
I do have one regret so far this year, and that is that I was unable to attend the USA/Canada Forum due to a death in the family, and related family issues. We were all signed up and prepared to attend when these issues all hit at once, and regretfully we had to cancel our plans. We completed our First District Cabinet meeting in Wellington on August 18. There were over 50 Lions in attendance. I was totally stunned by that number, but really overwhelmed with our Cabinet Installation. All of our Zone Chairs, District Officers, and District Committee Chairs were sworn in as a TEAM by PID Ed McCormick. It was a wonderful occasion, and the first ever such installation that I know of in MD 17. This event created a very cohesive TEAM that is working very well for the benefit of our District. I know that PID ED enjoyed this occasion as much as we all did, and we were honored to have him install all of our wonderful Lions to their positions within the Cabinet. Thank you PID Ed. Another exciting part of the day was visiting the Panhandle Railroad Museum just a couple of blocks from the meeting place. Within the Museum is a Lions room which is dedicated solely to display of Lions memorablilia from around the area. I heard many nice comments about the museum and the Lions Room. I want to thank the Wellington Lions Club for leading the way for this event. We are getting ready for our Second Cabinet meeting in Benton today, November 10, here at the Circle Middle School in Benton. It is hosted by the Benton Lions Club. I hope you all have enjoyed the special activities, the glass blowing demonstration, the tour of the Benton, KS Lions
Building with the model train event going on inside the building, and the One Stop Christmas Shop event at the Benton Church. We hope every Lion attending submitted a ballot for our District Peace Posters today. Our Third District Cabinet meeting will be February 9, 2019, location, TBA, in Emporia, KS District N Convention, April 12, 13, 2019, in El Dorado, KS There may be a location change from the previously announced site. Stay tuned for information on that. Fourth District Cabinet meeting, June 8, 2019, location TBA, Independence, KS Goals: I have 6 goals for District N this year. Two goals each for Leadership, Membership, and Service. They are as follows: Convey and communicate the International President s platform, LCI s 5 Global Causes, and the District Governor s goals to all Lions in District 17N throughout the Lions year. Plan and conduct four training opportunities for Club Officers and Zone Chairs in District 17N by October 1, We have had 2, and GLT Helen is exploring additional sessions, especially for the Club Secretaries. By June 30, 2019, District 17N will add 100 members, to include reinstated, transfer, and new members. As of this morning, we had added 56, over halfway to our goal. By June 30, 2019, District 17N will attain a percentage of 35% female membership. As of last report, we have attained 29%.
By June 30, 2019, 40% of Lions Clubs in District 17N will have contributed to Lions Clubs International Foundation. IPDG Indra Phillips and PDG Bill Kincaid have both attended the training for Campaign 100, and will be sharing that information with the Leadership Team and the membership. By June 30, 2019, 50% of Lions Clubs in District 17N will have conducted a program or event., related to Diabetes Awareness. November is World Diabetes Month and November 14 is World Diabetes Day. My Leadership Team has been encouraging Clubs to have and event or program especially in November, and the Clubs have been asked to report that activity on mylci. We have also asked for photos and articles for the Newsletter about these events. Health of the District: The health of the district is getting better. After losing 5 Clubs last year, we have renewed our efforts to connect with every Club in the district. We are looking for ways to be of service to the Clubs, and are making a good effort to communicate through our District newsletter, phone calls, s, and text messages. We have a great District web site maintained by Lion John Scovill, and we are offering to link Clubs who only have Facebook pages to our District Web Site so that they can more easily publicize their events and their stories to Lions everywhere. We are exploring some new ideas for further growth, possibly in the areas of Cyber Specialty Clubs, and Leo Clubs. A brainstorming session was held at our First Cabinet meeting to identify some areas for expansion. A
new Club workshop is being planned for sometime after the first of the year. We have a lot going on in District N, and I am so proud to be leading my District.

ALERT Team I suggested at the last meeting on Oct 27 that it would help the ALERT team to communicate with the others in the Clubs if we have a text group. If there are Lions that are interested in helping with the Lions Disaster Relief efforts, there is currently no database with everyone listed. I am asking for state leadership to send a request to all clubs asking their members if they would be interested in helping in the Disaster Relief ALERT program. If they are interested in volunteering, I would ask that they give their cell numbers to state leadership so that we can have a text group and have way to contact everyone in an efficient manner. When district Governors visit the clubs, I would also ask that they talk a little about the disaster relief trailers and the plans that would go forward as the needs arise. They would also ask for willing members to join the effort and the ones interested give leadership their cell phone number so they could be contacted later. When the cell numbers are in a text group and the disaster happens the Govenor will send out the details about the location and the contact information of the leadership onsite and other helpful details by text. This will make it possible to get the help needed onsite more effectively and timely. Lion Gary Boesker ALERT Program Chairman.
District Convention November 10, 2018 PCC Harry Stockwell and PDG Bill Kincaid are still in the planning stages of our District 17-N Convention, April 12 & 13, We have been discussing various things to try to bring the expenses of the convention down to an affordable value for the district. As with any large event planning, there are certain fixed expenses and lots of variable expenses. We are also constrained by the only fixed income that we will have and that is the district dues allocated to the convention. This amount is only $ based on a June 30 th membership of 1,565. International Director Patricia Pat Vannett from North Dakota has been invited as our honored speaker for our convention. ID Vannett has been a Lion since She has held many offices within the association, including club president, zone chairperson, district governor and multiple district GLT coordinator. She has received numerous awards, including an Extension Award, a Membership Key Award, an International Leadership Award and an International President s Award. She is also a Melvin Jones Fellow. Director Vannett s husband, Kevin, is also a Lion and a Melvin Jones Fellow. ID Vannett is on distribution for our District Governor s newsletters. We are planning to hold the convention in El Dorado, Kansas. We have been talking with Butler Community College and the Red Coach Inn regarding convention facilities. We have been talking with Holiday Inn Express & Suites, Days Inn & Suites and the Red Coach Inn regarding guest rooms and suites. We have been talking with BCC Food Services regarding catering. We are comparing costs so that the convention can be affordable to as many Lions as possible. Lion Harry and Bill will be contacting Lions Clubs to help with items such as community interface, registration, hospitality, standby hosts for the ID and her husband, etc. Please feel free to contact us if you have any ideas for entertainment, seminars, etc. at the convention. Bill Kincaid District Convention Co-chair
