1 Friends of WCDC Newsletter 2018 WCDC Angel We would like to remember Bill Garner Past WCDC Board Member Beloved husband of Chris, Board Member and father of Will, program participant. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Cathy s Corner I would like to thank everyone who attended or helped in any way to make Finnegan s Wake 2018 a huge success. This festive event is growing in popularity as is the public knowledge of WCDC and the services available. This was our most successful year having 46 local businesses sponsoring or contributing to the entertainment and activities of the evening. All proceeds from Finnegan s Wake will be used to support WCDC program services and client vocational and social opportunities. Our March monthly meeting will be held on Monday, March 12 th at 6 PM. I would like to invite everyone to join us as we plan a few new upcoming events. We would love to hear your ideas and suggestions. Our meeting last just 1 hour and are very productive. Come join us! 3 Friends of WCDC Finnegan s Wake was a great success & growing in popularity! There was standing room only as the mock Funeral Procession of Tim Finnegan began at the 6 th annual Finnegan s Wake that took place at Seacret s this past Saturday, March 3, With a full cast of characters, the procession was led by the OC Pipes and Drums and Tim s old wooden casket laid in state as Tim Finnegan, Cecil Tull, listened to humorous stories in an effort to bring Tim back from the dead. The well known local group, Folk Heroes, played traditional Irish Folk music as people bid silently on the 21 beautiful baskets that were filled with popular products from 30 local business. Worcester County Developmental Center Aktion Club of Kiwanis International Sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Ocean City & Ocean Pines Surprise Valentine s Day Party On February 14 th the Aktion Club hosted a surprise Valentine s Day party at the WCDC Facility. Individuals from all departments of the program attended. A sea of red tops filled the room as the clients danced and celebrated this very popular holiday. Refreshments and goodies were provided and served by the club members. Aktion Club members also conducted a collection of pet items for Kennilles Kupboard. 7 WCDC Client Spotlight WCDC welcomes our two newest residents, Tony Green and Ashlind Souder. Tony and Ashlind recently moved into a home in Ocean Pines that was completely renovated and adapted to meet their needs. Tony was living in the Bowie area where he heard about WCDC & Worcester County. Tony & his parents came for a visit and he decided this was the place for him. On move in day, Tony entered the house, checked out all the rooms and said, It feels like I am home. Ashlind had already been a WCDC participant in our day program. Ashlind was living in Salisbury with her mother when she decided it was time for her to spread her wings and move into her own place. The timing worked out right that this house became available for her. Ashlind, her mom & staff had lots of fun picking out furniture and accessories for her new home. There was a flurry of activity as Tony & Ashlind moved in, met their staff and got used to the house and each other, but they are now settling into a nice routine and enjoying their new home in the Pines. 9 Friends of WCDC The purpose of Friends of WCDC shall be to see that the needs of people who live with a disability are made known to the community and that these needs are being met. The members of Friends of WCDC shall be advocates for the individuals who live with a disability within the community and are participants in the programs of the Worcester County Developmental Center. Friends of WCDC shall provide support and assistance to WCDC whenever possible. Friends of WCDC Needs You!! * Meetings are every 2 nd Monday of the month in the WCDC cafeteria * Meetings start at 6:00 p.m. and last one hour * Yearly dues are $5.00 * New members are welcome at any time.
