1 Friends of WCDC Newsletter November 2015 Happy Thanksgiving Cathy s Corner Well we rested in the summer but Autumn finds us in high gear. As you will see in the pages of this newsletter, the WCDC clients and staff have been very, very busy. Spirit Week was a blast and members of Friends are so proud that we had the opportunity to sponsor the entire week and serve as judges for the Halloween Party. Presently, Friends are in the middle of the Annual Pumpkin Roll sale. I ask you to take the time to fill out the order form that is included in this Newsletter and return it to WCDC so our members make sure that we have plenty of this delicious item to fill all your orders. Speaking about Pumpkin Roll reminds me that Thanksgiving is right around the corner. I would like to Thank everyone for your support of the clients and programs of WCDC throughout the year. I would also like to wish each and every of you and all those that you love, a very blessed and happy Thanksgiving filled with lots of fun, delicious food, loving family and many, many blessings. Cathy Gallagher, President Friends & WCDC Activities November 9 Friends Monthly Meeting 6 PM November 11 Veteran s Day Day Program closed November 18 November Birthday Party - Noon Board of Directors meeting 6 PM November 22 Pumpkin Roll Pick Up November 25,26, 27 Day Program closed for Thanksgiving December 11 Holiday Open House 11:00 1:00 PM November November comes With night coming early The fires burn And November goes And dawn coming late And the kettle sings With the last red berries And ice in the bucket And the earth sinks to rest And the first white Snows And frost by the gate Until next Spring. 2 From the desk of our Executive Director I feel as if I am a character in a Dickens novel. In many ways times are good: Our laundry grew exponentially this past season; we are getting more assembly and repackaging jobs; we entered into a new venture making gift boxes; and our Inner Ocean soap has been growing steadily. Yet we are also dealing with a number of issues that will change how we do business in the future. Due to mandates from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, the Department of Justice, the Department of Labor and Maryland s DDA, by the end of 2018, we will most assuredly look a lot different than we do today. To me, the biggest irony is that Maryland is a work first state, yet within the next three years, if all continues as it is, most people with intellectual disabilities will be put out of work because the federal government and the state have devalued the work the clients do in our facility. We need to continue to stand together to support our clients being able to live the life they want by choosing how they want to spend their day. Two commercials: The Friends Pumpkin Roll sale is now going on. No Thanksgiving table is complete without one of these delicious desserts. Pease support our Friends. WCDC will shortly be sending out our annual appeal letter. We ask you to please be as generous as you can. Providing quality services requires everyone to pitch in and help. No matter what the level, your gift will have a major impact on the lives of those we serve. Worcester County Healthy Meals visits WCDC The Worcester County Dept. of Health made a visit to WCDC in an effort to give our Food Service Department some tips on preparing healthy food. Lynn Matava, AADP, Health & Wellness Motivator worked with both staff & clients in the preparation of Roasted Broccoli, Kale &Green Beans and a delicious Baked Spiced Apple. In addition to learning valuable information everyone participated in this project and enjoyed a superb dessert.
