1 May 2017 Editor: Carol Dobi April s happy hour meeting at the Trinidad Clubhouse was well attended and everyone seemed to have had a fun evening. Members got to view the beautiful van that FOCUS purchased for Urban Street Angels and learn more about the agency from speakers Eric Lovett (Founder and Executive Director) and Jerry Troyer (Director of Operations). They spoke about their work with homeless youth, the positive impact they ve made since forming the organization in 2012 and expressed their gratitude to FOCUS for all of the support that we ve provided to them. Members attending donated packages of new sports socks for Eric and Jerry to distribute to the youth that they assist. Thank you all for your generosity! As usual, Sharyn Blongiewicz did a terrific job of organizing the event thank you, Sharyn!!! Thank you also to Fran and Walt Becker who were our host and hostess, Bob Blongiewicz and Fred Kallsen for tending bar, and Jeri Barsz for the beautiful succulent centerpieces she made and donated for our raffle. Thank you also to Carmel Fleck and Don Swanson for your great camera work, capturing some wonderful photos! You can see some of their photos in the Event Photos section of this newsletter. Our next General Membership meeting, which will be a dinner, is planned for Thursday, June 22 nd. The location is still being finalized, so please watch your for future updates. 3 GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETINGS SHARYN BLONGIEWICZ There will be no General Membership meeting in May. Our next meeting, on June 22 nd, will be a dinner meeting. A flyer with all of the details will be ed to everyone once we ve finalized our plans. FUNDRAISING Marsha Buckley-Boyle We did a great job with our Kickin It Up For Kids fundraiser, raising $50,533! That was a good start to this year s fundraising, but we have more work ahead of us. As many of you are already aware, the Board has decided that we will not be partnering with the Coronado Cays Yacht Club for this year s Chili Dinner/Holiday Boat Parade. Unfortunately, we don t make enough money with this fundraiser, considering all of the time spent to organize it. Since we need another type of fundraiser we ve decided to hold a community garage sale using a new and different format from what has been used in the past. On August 5 th we will hold garage sales at multiple locations in the Coronado Cays, as well as in the Village. We already have one Village member who has agreed to host a garage sale at his home. We are in search of homes in the Cays where we can hold additional sales. Rather than having to move large donated items, such as furniture pieces, to one of the garage sale locations, we will instead photograph these items and display them, with pricing and additional information, on poster boards at each of the sale sites. Shoppers can view the photos and if interested they can make arrangements to see the items at the home of the donor. We need your donations so now is a great time to start looking through your home and garage for gently used items that you are no longer using! Please hold onto them until we get closer to the August 5 th sale date. If you are interested in hosting a garage sale at your home, please contact Lorna Perez-Caster at landgcaster@aol.com. 4 PROJECTS LISA ALVES AND JEAN BAUER Thank you to all our FOCUS Shoppers: Lesley Angelino, Carla Bacon, Fran Becker, Pat Bowler, Roger Clapp, Mandy Cohn, Nanci Copley, Lucille Fleming, Lorna Perez-Caster, Suzanne Manual, Pat McDonough, Bonnie McGinty and Bonnie Van Vugt. You are doing a great job and we truly appreciate all your time and effort. We invite all members to be a shopper in the future. Being a FOCUS shopper is rewarding, fun and gives you a true sense of why FOCUS exists. Join us as a shopper and you ll see first hand why we work so hard to raise funds for the children. APRIL PROJECTS Total $4,200 MONARCH SCHOOL $1,200 Shopper: Jeri Barsz and Joann Palmer Monarch exists to provide youth impacted by homelessness with access to education, but also with necessities such as food, clothing and emotional support. To do this they have an on-campus Boutique called the Butterfly Boutique that FOCUS has continually supported. They hold shopping days every Wednesday and Thursday for their students. FOCUS will be providing leggings for girls, jeans for boys along with brushes and combs. THE POLINSKY CHILDREN S CENTER- Promises2kids-$3,000 Shopper: Stephanie Lay The Polinsky Children s Center is a 24-hour facility operated by the County of San Diego temporary shelter for children. The center was built on land donated by the county with funds raised exclusively from private donations under the auspices of the Child Abuse Prevention Foundation. The children may have been separated from their families for their own safety, or have been neglected; or whose parents are unable to provide for them. The daily population of children served is From FOCUS, the children will be provided a bike helmet so they can participate in bike day at the center, hygiene products, crafts, Legos, wristwatches and ear buds. We will also equip the children s general play area with a large TV, a play station and play station controllers, accessories and games. PROJECTS LISA ALVES AND JEAN BAUER

5 SUNSHINE MARJORIE LOGAN Our deepest condolences go out to: Lynn Walsh on the passing of her husband, Dick. Gail Donahue on the passing of her husband, Jeffrey. Our thoughts and prayers are with you both. Sending good thoughts out to Bobbie and Pete Mattson. We hope all went well with Pete s surgery and that he has a speedy recovery.
