1 LORNA PEREZ-CASTER Issue: MAY Hello Everyone I have to start by thanking all of you that worked on our big Fundraiser, An Evening With Elvis. Our Chairpersons, Roger Clapp and Sharyn Blongiewicz who worked endlessly for months to make sure all details were in order, deserve a big Thank You. How about all the work that went in to lining up the Silent Auction items thanks Leslie Granger and all who assisted her. We thank our underwriters and donors, we appreciate your support, and to our many volunteers who helped with this event we could not have done it without you. What can I say, with so many capable and wonderful people running the show, how could it have not been a terrific Event!! Everyone there had a good time visiting with friends, eating the delicious food and dancing to the Elvis hits!! At our April Board Meeting 3 new projects were presented and approved: Junior Seau Adaptive Sports Camp, Promises2Kids, Military Outreach Ministries. Total coast for the projects: $9,200. The vote went out to the General Membership with 76 yes for the Projects. Thank you for your enthusiastic response. Coming up on Saturday, May 26 th, 8am to 1pm will be the FOCUS Rummage Sale at the Grand Caribe Room. The chairman is Roger Clapp. Please see the flyer for all the necessary information. Our next General Meeting will be on Thursday, June 21 st at Miguel s for Happy Hour. Be sure to attend and bring a friend to visit and find out what new things are happening in FOCUS. If you would like more information, please contact Roger Clapp. Help Wanted Volunteers are needed for the Rummage Sale. If you can help set up prior to Rummage Sale or day of sale, May 26, please contact Roger Clapp. We are also in need of folding tables for the event. In an effort to continue to grow support for FOCUS and the goal of assisting disadvantaged we all need to focus on bringing in NEW members! Please try to bring in 1 NEW guest to next Month s meeting. 4 PROJECTS Sharon Shelton and Bonnie Van Vugt PROPOSED PROJECTS FOR APRIL ) JUNIOR SEAU ADAPTIVE SPORTS CAMP Mission: The Adaptive Sports and Recreation Association is a local nonprofit organization that provides the best athletic programs for children, adult and injured military with physical impairments. Our 32 nd Annual Camp will take place July 16-21, 2018 at Mission Bay and Miramar College. We are expecting 80 campers between the ages of 4-18 years with varying disabilities, such as spina bifida, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and spinal cord injuries. They will have the opportunity to participate in approximately 15 sports during the week and make lasting memories of their empowering and inspiring experiences. Amount: $3,700 Purpose: Purchase camp T-shirt and drawstring bags for campers at ($2,200). Also providing nursing supplies, which include sunscreen, band-aids, gauze, cold packs, etc.. ($1,500). FOCUS supported this camp last year. 2) PROMISES2KIDS (PROMISES TO KIDS) Mission: Promises2Kids annually provides over 3,000 current and former foster youth in San Diego County with the tools, opportunities and guidance they need to address the circumstances that brought them into foster care, overcome the difficulties of their past, and grow into healthy and successful adults. The support four specific foster youth programs: 1) Preschool at Polinsky Children s Center and provide other services there such as screenings and pet therapy programs 2) Camp Connect - 4 day summer camp where foster siblings can reconnect 3) Guardian Scholars support to foster child in college and 4) Foster Funds special funding for birthday gifts, graduation and sports uniforms for foster children. 5 Amount: $2,500 Purpose: Support Guardian Scholar program by purchasing items for monthly care packages approx. 100 persons that are sent to foster children in colleges. Typically a care package contains of: 3 traditional school supplies, 2 travel size personal hygiene items, 3 snacks, 1 beverage, 2 items that connect to theme of package, 1 item specifically from FOCUS and note of encouragement. Package normally costs $25.00 per person. In 2013, FOCUS supported one of their Camp Connect programs. 3) MILITARY OUTREACH MINISTRIES (MOM) Mission: SDMOM is a 501(c)(3) charity supported by churches, civic organizations, businesses, military members and private donors working with other nonprofit organizations. With a small paid staff of military wives and many volunteers, SDMOM provides helping services to thousands of enlisted families each year. All services are provided free of charge. Services include nearly daily distribution of food, small household goods, children s supplies and hosting holiday events, baby showers and family events. SDMOM serves the Active Duty junior enlisted military family (mostly ranks E-5 and below), typically headed by a year old, with young children, away from home, and trying to survive in our expensive economy on a low salary while struggling with high debt and the family stresses of deployment. Amount: $3,000 Purpose: Still awaiting specific list of items from Director, Barbara Chavez but in the past, items have included diapers, baby strollers, baby seats, formula and other new baby essentials. TOTAL AMOUNT FOR APRIL PROJECTS: $9,200

6 Wellness Suite at San Diego Rescue Mission. FOCUS purchased everything except the cabinetry! Dear FOCUS Family, I wanted to forward a picture of one of our clients receiving one of the items from the FOCUS grant. Baby is under one month old and the breast feeding pillow will help mom be successful in continuing to exclusively breastfeed, which research has shown provides numerous benefits for both mom and baby!
