2 Dor-Wood Optimist Club Perfect Attendance Day 1. Give a description of the project. Perfect Attendance Day was designed to get all members of the Dor-Wood Optimist Club to attend a regular club meeting and to invite back those prior officers and directors who have left the club. This was a celebration of our past, our present and our future. The Dor-Wood Optimist Club was chartered on June 12,1965, so we have a long history to celebrate and remember. Joe McCloud, the only remaining charter member of Dor-Wood, was the instigator and chair of the program. He personally called all those members who do not regularly attend our weekly meetings urging them to attend on May 5,2011. Joe also called and invited, as our guests, past presidents, secretaries, district officers, and other former members who helped make Dor-Wood the great Optimist Club that it has become. May 5,2011, was selected as the date so those members who spend part of the winter in Florida or elsewhere would be back and members would not yet be on vacation trips. There were 74 people at the event, 67 members and 7 guests. The normal weekly attendance is about 35 members. There were lots of conversations and catching up with old friends, past members and current members. Joe McCloud gave a brief history of the origins of the club, introduced the former members and recalled their rolls in the development of the Dor-Wood Optimist Club. Please refer to the attached Dor-Wood Weekly club bulletin for May 5, 2011, for more details on the day's events. A proclamation from the Mayor of Kettering proclaimed May 5,2011, "Kettering Dor-Wood Optimist" day. A side note: the Mayor of Kettering is a member of the Kettering Rotary Club (boo), but two Dor-Wood Optimist Club members are on the city council. Charter member Joe McCloud was the key to the event. Perfect Attendance Day was capped by Joe's closing statement, "I am very proud to be a Dor-Wood Optimist" which drew a hearty round of applause. 2. List specific goals for the project. The goal of Perfect Attendance Day was to get as many current members and former members to attend the meeting and celebrate the work of past members and officers. This will give current and new members a better sense of who and what the Dor-Wood Optimist Club stands for in this community. This will strengthen the resolve of our club so we can continue to do great things for the youth of the community.

3 3. Why did your Club choose to do this project? We have a long and significant history that we do not want to forget. It is the basis for future accomplishments. 4. Explain the publicity/promotion plan for this project. Joe McCloud waged a personal campaign to call current and past members. It was announced at the weekly meetings and heavily promoted in our weekly bulletin. We did not do a good job of building on the success of the day to promote it to the community. 5. Please list the specific duties required for the project from planning to completion. The key is a dedicated member, or members, who have the sense of history of the club and strongly believe in the work of the club. That member(s) has to have the time and enthusiasm to call present and former members urging them to attend Perfect Attendance Day and asking them for a commitment to attend. They have the creditability to persuade members that are frequent non-attenders and past members to attend. All it takes are a number of phone calls and in some cases, finding out how to contact past members still living in the area. 6. List specific materials, supplies and resources required for the project. You only need some time, a telephone, a club directory and information about former members who still live in and near the community. 7. Provide a timeline of all project steps from the planning stages to the final completion of the project. Please include dates and person responsible (job title). Charter Member Joe McCloud chaired Perfect Attendance Day and began contacting non-attending members and former members as soon as the Board approved the project on January 13, This continued until Perfect Attendance day on May Describe how the project benefited youth. The benefit was indirect as a stronger club with a sense of history will be more willing to pursue programs to benefit youth. 9. Describe how the project benefited the community. Perfect Attendance Day made the Dor-Wood Optimist Club a stronger community institution.

4 10. Describe how the project impacted the Club considering both planned and unexpected results. It was clear that everyone felt very good about the day and about the Dor-Wood Optimist Club. It renewed the spirit of the club, which has moved beyond some trauma earlier in the year. 11. Describe any complications encountered and how they were resolved during this project. The only complication was that some people would tell you they will attend and they do not come. That is a disappointment. 12. List any recommendations for Clubs considering running this project. Get a long time member who is committed to the goals of the club and excited about the project. Assure them that this is a one-time commitment for the benefit of the club and can be done from home on the telephone. 13. Would your Club run this project again? Why or why not? Absolutely yes! It was very well received and may become an annual event. 14. If your Club would run this project again, what changes would be made? We need to get publicity to the public right after the event. We may also consider moving to a fall date. Complete the following detailed budget and submit it in the project entry. There was no income and the cost was seven lunches for the past members and guests who attended.

8 The Dor-Wood Weekly A weekly publication of the Dorwood Optimist Club Kettering, Ohio» Ohio District Club Number Zone 13 Vol. 47, No. 30 5/5/11 - Bulitlin Editor: Mike Aifm President Dave Hammond opened the "Perfect Attendance Day" meeting by greeting a Dor-Wood audience of nearly 85 current members, past members, prospective members, and guests, by declaring that Dor-Wood is the greatest Optimist Qub in the world, Dave reinforced the credos of the club: "We Will Succeed" and "We Not Me." Jerry Basford led the group in prayer by asking Dor-Wood to remember the work and decisions of government official s; to acknowledge and bless the day's visitors; to pray for the success and safety of our youth; and to thank our military during these unsettled times. In honor of very long-time club member John Jeffries, who recently passed away, the luncheon main entree was spaghetti and meatballs. After tlie delicious lunch and an abundance of great conversation and reminiscences, President Hammond entertained program updates. On the member front, Jim Brown reported that Jim Trent is in Miami Valley Hospital undergoing additional surgery to address a recurrence of a past health issue. Please keep Jim in your prayers. Brace Duke underwent hip replacement surgery and is recovering well. Bob Moore is recovering comfortably at home; Rob Hoffman indicated [hat Judge Moore should be returning to the bench in a few weeks. Mike Klopfcr reported that while he has plenty of support for the 2011 Ohio Optimist International Junior Golf Championship (Dayton District) on May 14 at the Dayton Community Golf Course, he can always use more. Mike said there are 63 golfers signed up, which is much lower than normal. Ohio's persistent rain pattern may be the main cause. Hopefully die weather will break and the tournament will go well. If you have any questions, please contact Mike at rnklopfer@eartlilink.net. Neal Charske reminded the dub mat the Kettering School System field Day for youth is May 1*7-19, Sign-up to help is seriously lagging. Please assist Neai by signing up for one of the days or ail three. If you wish to participate, Neal is distributing a sign-up sheet each week, or you may contact Neal directly. Be prepared to show up at 8:30am each day and you will be finished by noon (or earlier). It is a fun outing for all, but Neal needs our help. The Ohio District conference is on Saturday, May 21. Contact Bryan McCormick if you plan to attend, He needs a count of how many members will be attending. Mart; Jewell will be honored at the Presidents Club Outstanding Club Member Breakfast on May 19 at the Engineers dub of Dayton. Congratulations to Marc on his award. This event is an annual breakfast -at which one 'Outstanding Service Qub Member" is selected from each member club and honored. Broad in its concept and unique in its composition, the Presidents Qub of Dayton, Ohio, was founded in 1932 by a group of local businessmen who had a genuine interest in the growth of their respective service organiiatioris. The breakfast begins at 8:00ara and the cost is $15. Dave Mills promoted the upcoming Avenue of Flags holidays: Memorial Day, Flag Day, and July 4th. Dave is looking for setup and takedown volunteers and implored the club to take multiple copies of the Avenue of Flags fliers and business cards to pass out among die neighborhoods of Kettcring. The program continues to grow and is a substantial contributor to Dor-Wood's success. Rags fly from dawn to dusk in front of homes and Dor-Wood volunteers handle everything. If you have any questions, please contact Dave at Larry McVey led the voting process for the election of Dor-Wood officers. After voting the following members were elected: President, Bill Braun; President-Beet, Frank Spolrich; Secretary, Bryan McCormick; Treasurer, Bob Montavon; Vice Presidents, Ron Armstrong and Jerry Basford; Board oi Directors for one year, Fred Hofrnann, Robert Moore, and Jim Shancsy; and Board of Directors for two years, Mike Athmer, Jeff Sehairbauin, and Joe Wiilen. President Hammond had dub members introduce their guests and they were afforded warm welcomes by The club. Also, Dor-Wood Scholarship recipients for 2012 will be in attendance at next week's meeting. Thev include Samanfha Murdoek and Kaitlin Pickrel from Fairmont; and Peter Van Dcr Veil en and Jordan Hibner from Alter. Senior Dor-Wood member and Perfect Attendance Day organizer, Joe McCloud, provided some background of the club 'sbeginningbaekin Original club members included prominent businessmen from companies like Top Value, Delco Products, Ohio Bell, Woodlane Shopping Plaza, and other companies whose location and community focus was centered on the Dorothy Lane-Woodman Drive area of Kettering. Joe laughingly informed the club that in 1965 Dorothy Lane and Woodman Drive were single-lane roads. The club's first fundraiser was raffling off a TV, which raised $500. Joe also told the story of how the club began selling Christinas Trees. Although tree} ot locations have moved around over the years, at its peak, the dub sold 1,500 trees at two locations in Kettering. Joe then recogniied countless members of the Dor-Wood Optimist Club who have over tlie many years provided countless service hours and contributions to the Kettering community, and have served the club and state in a number of official capacities. Among the many names mentioned by Joe, but in no way limited to these only: Jerry & BiD Roberts, Fred Smith, Bill Jackson, Tom Fnmer, Bob Moore, Harry Veam. Larry Spate, Ron Wilson, Jack Akcnnan, Jerry Harriett, Paul Atkinson, and all the Club's past presidents. Obviously, there were many more names than this mentioned, but space prohibits listing them all. Frank Spolrieh then read an official proclamation from Kettering Mayor Don Patterson declaring on behalf of the Mayor and the City of Ksttering that May 5, 2011, was declared Kettering Dor-Wood Optimist Club Day in Kettering, The proclamation recognized Dor-Wood for its 46 years as an integral part of Kettering, its service to youth in the community, and its effort to bring out the best in the city's youth. Sergeant-at-Anns Fred Dresscl then told a number of jokes most centered on former FBI Public Enemy #1, the late bin Laden. There were no youdi in attendance, so Fred could unload. Fred also targeted all followers of Pittsburgh sports. Fred made an attempt at setting a record for fines levied. He fined: Joe McQoud (but rescinded it as Joe is senior club member), Joe Petroeelli, Rich Foley, Mike Athnier, Larry McVey, Don Monnig, Neal Charske, Harry Vearu, Bob & Randy McCoy, Jerry Barnett, and Mike Klopfer. Happy Bucks were offered up by Ron Armstrong (his 50th wedding anniversary), Paul Atkinson. Rich Foley, Jeff Schairbaurn (2Dth wedding anniversary), Jack Akcrman, Mike Klopfer, Doug Fritz, Ted Unk. Joe Petroccili. and Joe McCloud. The small pot of $26 was won by Neal Charske. But alas, Neal failed to win the large pol of $482. In conclusion, to quote Joe KfcClond, "I am very proud to be a Dor-Wood Optimist." The day's meeting was a job well done by Joe.
