3 // Countryside Group Liz "SD //. Working the steps has been a God send. It's a growing process. There is so much to learn about ourselves. We're here to become ourselves." Ryan "SD //. The Big Book was the gateway into this program. I really identified with the Big Book & I got a sponsor right away & started the steps right away & was willing to go to any lengths to get sober-i didn't question anything. I started doing the work & started to change. I belong here." // Together We Can (formerly Phillipe Park) Wed & Missy "SD //. I got a sponsor, steps, pink cloud, & fell in love w/ my home group, OMG these are my people. Let God take over." Meg "SD //. My sponsor is my sponsor because she uses the step tool book & program of recovery." // Attitude Highland Ave, Monday thru Cory "SD //. I complained that my wife didn't trust me & they said 'if you want to be trusted, be trustworthy." Jack "SD //. I have to let God speak through you guys, & we're not all high or low on the same day & it's not about the years, it's about the days. If you're struggling, you need to put your hand out. There's not a destination, it's a journey." // Walsingham 00 Walsingham Rd. Suite Bill " SD//. I was too drunk & blind to see the path I was going down. I was trying to be in charge, instead of letting God. If I 'let go & let God,' then life seems to work out. AA saved my life & it can save yours." Mike "I spent a lot of money on people I didn't know & things I don't remember. My st year sponsor did wonders & my life straightened out. The Walsingham Group has been just wonderful. Newcomers, make AA a habit." My sobriety date is //00. I am the District One Chair for Pinellas County. Early in sobriety, my sponsor suggested I start working with the Corrections Committee. Eventually I started taking meetings into Pinellas County jail. You learn quickly how important it is for us to be carrying the message to places outside of our homegroups. There are countless people who identify with alcoholism that do not know about AA. The most rewarding part of General Service is being able to serve with such an enthusiastic District. It s a blessing to watch people get involved and learn to work with others to better carry the message. Making life-long friends and watching people grow in service are the two biggest rewards. A memorable example: We were hosting a Public Information presentation for 00+ students in a middle school gymnasium. The next evening, a lady came up to us at our homegroup and said she was a teacher from that middle school. She heard our presentation and realized she wasn t alone and needed some help. She became a member of our home group. We showed up to talk to students and ended up helping a teacher get sober. God is truly amazing! If you want to get involved in service work, do not be discouraged or intimidated. You don t need experience to get involved with General Service. We encourage you to become an alternate GSR, or GSR at your home group or join a Standing Committee (ex. Treatment, Corrections, Public Information). General Service helps us grow as people, gain confidence and teaches us lot about accountability. In this process you will meet some great people, make new friends and gain extensive knowledge of how the spirit of AA Traditions/ AA Concepts work in our program. Reach out to someone involved in service and ask them to be your service sponsor. We are all willing to help. Your Higher Power will take care of the rest. Please check out our website to see all that is going on. We encourage and welcome you to join us for any meeting listed on the calendar.

7 Saturday Evening Post story on AA, March, By, the overall AA society had demonstrated greater success in h e l p i n g a l c o h o l i c s than any previous methods and had grown to about,000 members. But for most of North America, AA was still unknown. A reporter named Jack Alexander from The Saturday Evening Post was assigned to investigate and possibly do a story about AA. He had many doubts about doing a story on a society of recovered drunks. But, through visiting many groups, interviewing and getting to know the members, he was won over completely. Specifically, when we went to St. Louis, he visited a group with some of his old drinking buddies he called rollicking rumpots. He thought these guys would never get sober! It gave him the fire to do the story. When Bill W. showed him around the various groups, he got to re-visit many he had not seen recently. As he talked to older members and saw the sobriety, he understood his experience had to be shared with as many drunks as possible. The program was working and these hopeless people were staying sober. Bill W. reinforced the Anonymous part of the society. The Post could only take pictures of the rooms and back of heads. The article he wrote was a magnificent piece of journalism! The Post accepted and it a part of the March st publication. Inquiries began to flood in to AA, leaving the small staff of what was then a makeshift headquarters overwhelmed. Alcoholics Anonymous tripled in size in the next year and continued to grow exponentially. The Archives collection includes an original magazine of this story. We often bring this historic piece when we display our items at AA events. It is a magnificent piece of history. Pamphlets are available and many stories are on the internet about Jack s experience writing about AA. - The Archives Committee is an active group of fellows working to preserve the AA history collections from Pinellas County. We bring some of the items periodically to AA conventions and special events. We also have a dedicated web page: Opinions expressed in Plain & Straight are not those of Alcoholics Anonymous, nor does the publication of any article imply endorsement or affiliation by Pinellas Intergroup or Alcoholics Anonymous.
