Box 830 Troy, Ohio WEBSITE: kiwaniscluboftroy.com A Message from our President As November approaches and Thanksgiving nears, I encourage everyone to spend time with friends, family and loved ones, and to give thanks for the many blessings bestowed upon us I would certainly consider our Kiwanis family to be one of those blessings I am hoping that everyone has been enjoying this lovely weather we ve had to get the Fall season started. Speaking of the Fall, we conducted 2 different fundraising efforts the weekend of 10/14 10/15, at Fall Farm Fest and Parade of Homes. So I wanted to say Thank You to everyone who volunteered. As I mentioned at our last meeting, Ohio District Governor Dan Litzinger s goals/commitments for growing Ohio Kiwanis are as follows: 1. Build a minimum of 24 new Clubs and strengthen existing Clubs For a net gain in Ohio membership. 2. Increase Ohio Kiwanis Leadership through meaningful and accessible education. 3. Encourage and increase partnerships with SLP S and Kiwanis Divisions. 4. Promote the Kiwanis Brand through social media and print media. 5. Increase recognition of the accomplishments of Kiwanians, Clubs and Divisions. 6. Increase participation in District and Division events through communication and streamlining the event with emphasis on education fellowship and fun. As I certainly know that in Troy we will assist Dan in reaching each of these for our District, there s one area that I m confident that we can lead by example, and that s Net Gain in membership. Without new members, we can t grow. Therefore, I am asking each member to do everything they can to share the Kiwanis message with their friends, family, customers, etc., and get them to a meeting. Welcome New Member Mike Kendall Kendall Financial & Insurance, LLC Mike Kendall began his insurance career in June of 1992 with his dad. He is now partner/owner of Kendall Financial & Insurance Company LLC. He enjoys hanging out with his 3 children, working out, and riding his Harley. He also belongs to Referral Connections Group of Troy. Mike is joining as a business membership for Kendall Financial & Insurance, LLC. He is going to be an awesome addition to our AWESOME Troy Kiwanis Club! Carrie Kendall, Sponsor Committee Reports HEADSTART READING Thursday, November 2 We are having a November reading on Thursday, November 2 at 9 am. There will not be any afternoon reading and we have more children to read to in the morning, so y all come! Add your name to the sign-up sheets that is distributed, or call me to add your name to the list. The date is November 7 th at the Troy Eagles Campground building starting at 6:00 pm. The cost per person will be $30. Sign up soon! Jack and Penny Hoekstra, co-chairpersons OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD SHOEBOXES FOR NEEDY KIDS It is time again to fill our shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child! Our Kiwanis club has participated in this program for more than 15 years. Brochures explaining the process of filling these boxes are available from Dan Synan or Penny Hoekstra at our weekly meetings. These filled shoeboxes are due no later than Wednesday, November 8 th. 3 AKTION CLUB Hello Kiwanians! Happy October! Aktion Club finished tie blankets this week and look forward to our trip to Dayton Children s Hospital to deliver them! Our next service project is creating some ornaments for Hospice of Miami County s Christmas trees. As the holiday season s approach, it is always a fun time for us. We will have a Christmas Dance Fundraiser in December (date to be determined soon). So, it is a perfect time to build our numbers with new memberships and that is what our club is doing! We had 3 new potential members at our last meeting and with the new Kiwanis year beginning I am excited to see who makes their membership official by paying their dues and receiving their membership pins! We encourage you to join us at our next meeting: Wednesday, November 1 from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM at Riverside (1625 Troy Sidney Rd. Troy). Krista Smith, Co-Advisor KIWANIS HONORS Troy Kiwanis Honors 2017 presentation Oct. 11, 2017 In 2016, your Kiwanis Board took an idea to have an annual Kiwanis Honors program and assigned to the Marketing & Public/ Media Relations Committee. That committee came up with a handful of possible organizations and individuals and events to be honored and then went to the membership for some more suggestions. At this time, the list included two events (Summer Camp for Bereaved Children and Optimists Honor the Flag Project), thirteen organizations (including Health Partners Free Clinic, Family Abuse Center, Honor Flight for Veterans of Miami County, Troy Fire and Police Departments, and eight others), and two individuals. In 2016, the Kiwanis Honors went to Ron Erwin. In 2017, the committee again went to the membership and came up with additional candidates. This list now includes two events, fourteen organizations and two individuals. The Committee went back to the Board for a vote. And this year s winner is.. This ORGANIZATION began in the early 1950s as a labor of love by a few dedicated Miami County families. At a time when students with intellectual and physical disabilities were not included at public schools, these parents took it upon themselves to begin training classes for their own children. In 1952, eight students attended a summer class in the Forest Elementary School in Troy. In 1962, a school was constructed for these students at 1625 Troy Sidney Road in Troy. What began in a small classroom grew to fill one building and the building grew to support job training opportunities in a second building and now more than 1,000 people with developmental disabilities receive numerous services out in the community, with this agency supporting them from birth through the end of their lives. The Miami County Board of Developmental Disabilities, better known in our community as Riverside, came under jurisdiction of Miami County in 1967 when Ohio Senate Bill 169 was signed, creating a county board of developmental disabilities in all of Ohio s 88 counties. Riverside kept its original name, although it is officially the Miami County Board of DD. People are often surprised to learn that Riverside is no longer a school, since children with disabilities are now educated in their home districts. However, Riverside s services have expanded greatly in 65 years! It is now an over-arching presence in the lives of the more than 1,000 people it serves, by funding and coordinating a multitude of services in their lives services such as homemaker and personal care services in their homes through agencies like BLESS, CRSI and Total Homecare Solutions; adult day services at places like Goodwill, RT Industries and Vision Mentors; job training and placement; early intervention services for children ages 0-3; school age support for children 6-22; advocacy training; and recreation services and Special Olympics programming. With a Mission to empower people with developmental disabilities to live, work and play as full members of our community, Riverside embraces community partnerships like this one with Kiwanis to create new opportunities for the individuals served by the agency. At the helm of Riverside is Superintendent Brian Green. A lifelong Miami County resident, Brian connected with Riverside in the 1990s when he owned a computer technology business. After receiving Riverside s services for his young son, Brian applied for and was hired as the Information Systems Manager in 2000, After a few years he was promoted to Operations Manager, then to Assistant Superintendent a few years later, before taking the role of leading the agency as Superintendent in As a parent of an individual served, as well as a strong community leader, Brian has led Riverside and the people it serves toward a bright and exciting future.

4 One of the most exciting things to develop under his tenure is the formation of the Aktion Club of Miami County. Aktion Clubs are Kiwanis Service Clubs, similar to Key Clubs, and is the only service club for adults with disabilities, Miami County s Aktion Club s first meeting was January 20, 2016, and was officially chartered on May 11, 2016 with 28 members. They now have over 40 active members who attend meetings and activities twice a month. According to Riverside s Community Awareness & Opportunities Director Melissa Nichols, The partnership we ve been able to forge with the Kiwanis Club of Troy under Brian s leadership has been life-changing for many people. Riverside s connection to Kiwanis has opened all of us up to new friendships and new possibilities. Kiwanis s involvement with Riverside to begin an Aktion Club has helped us take leaps forward in our achieving Our Vision to build a community that values and supports people of all abilities! Please rise to salute our 2017 recipient of the Troy Kiwanis Honors RIVERSIDE DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES.
