Box 830 Troy, Ohio WEBSITE: kiwaniscluboftroy.com Fellow Kiwanians, A Message from our President April Fools Day, Walk to Work Day, Peanut Butter and Jelly Day, Read a Map Day, National Beer Day, Easter Sunday and National Arbor Day are all holidays in the month of April. The best day is April 29 th, because it is Pancake Day for the Troy Kiwanis Club. We are getting close to the busiest fundraising period for Kiwanis. I hope you are getting excited! In April, we will be inducting two more new members. It is my hope that we continue to add more as the year progresses. Our new corporate member is Ark and Echo, a business downtown selling home decorations and clothing. Angela McWhirter, the Executive Director of The Western Ohio Home Builders Association, is the other new member to be inducted. The club will also be looking for new members for the Board of Directors in April. We have four members whose terms expire. Three members have shown interest in remaining on the board for another term. We will need to have at least one new member for the Board of Directors. If anyone is interested, please let me know. She is originally from Vandalia, but 4 years ago she married Wayne McWhirter and moved to Troy with their 4 young adults: Jordan, Cameron, Alex, & Katy, and their fur-child Vanna White. Angie s professional background is sales, residential construction, and is also a professionally trained interior designer. Angie also owns Mac Designs with provides interior design services for residential clients. You can read her weekly design tips on the back page of the Home Buyer s Guide in the Troy Daily News. She is currently the Executive Director of The Western Ohio Home Builders Association in Troy. The HBA represents builders and sub-contractors in Miami, Clarke, Logan, and Champaign counties and is affiliated with Ohio Home Builders & the National Association of Home Builders. The HBA s goal as an association is to keep the dream of affordable home ownership possible as well as giving back to the community. Projects that you are probably most familiar with are The Annual Miami County Home Hobart Arena, Parade of Homes, and the Santa House that was donated last year to the Troy Main Street Organization. In her spare time she likes to entertain her family & friends, and so on adventures with her husband Wayne in their convertible. Angie & her family love the energy of Troy and its downtown, as well as all of the awesome people she has met through her work at the HBA. Angie is going to be an awesome addition to our Kiwanis Family. Carrie Kendall, Angie s sponsor PANCAKE DAY Saturday, April 29th Committee Reports Please note on your calendar that the date of our annual Pancake Day has been moved ahead to April 29 th, due to a few conflicts. This is our largest fundraiser of the year, so we are looking for as much help as possible in selling tickets, cooking, serving, cleaning, etc Each member will be asked to sell 20 tickets, so if I don t see you at a meeting, we will mail those tickets out to you. If you believe you will be able to sell more than 20 tickets, please let me know so I can get a larger quantity to you! We will continue to pass around a volunteer sign-up sheet over the next few weeks, but if you are unable to make it to a meeting, please let me know if you would still like to help and sign-up! As in years past, we will be holding a Silent Raffle. This has proven to be a very successful fundraising activity, and is only as strong as the donations we re able to secure. Please read the article from Kim Meier for greater details, and contact her if you have something you d like to donate! 3 SILENT RAFFLE AT PANCAKE DAY Saturday, April 29th 4 years, $1,200, 10 volunteers, 60 Kiwanians and a bundle of passion and dedication.the ingredients to a successful fundraiser bloomed from the genius minds of Kiwanis members. The Silent Raffle held at Pancake Day started out as a way to showcase the talents of our own members through homemade items and a way to make a few extra dollars to accompany the proceeds from Pancake Day. Over the last four years it has evolved into baskets of goodies for children, garden tools, artwork, picnic essentials, scooters, wine, chocolate and many more wonderful items. Most of these items are purchase locally supporting those hometown shops we love. If you would like to donate an item for this raffle, please contact either Kim Meier ( ) or Lisa Broomhall ( ). If we need to pick up a donation we would be happy to do so as well. Thank you for your support and for making this fundraiser a success! Kim Meier and Lisa Broomhall, co-chairpersons AKTION CLUB Hello Kiwanians! We are so excited that Spring is finally here! And with that brings the Pancake Day! We have issued a challenge to our members to sell, sell, sell tickets this year. We have great inspiration from the group last year when six members sold 113 tickets! We are also looking forward to officer elections in May. Nominations are at the next meeting (April 5), and Frank and I are hoping that many members will throw their hat in the ring! Also, we have been challenged by Piqua s Key Club to participate in a Hygiene Product Drive so if you stop by a store over the next couple of weeks and want to pick up some hygiene products to help us out that would be WONDERFUL! (You can give the products to Frank or me to pass on to the club.) Our meetings in April will be: Wednesday, April 5 3:30-4:30 at Riverside (1625 Troy Sidney Rd. Troy) Wednesday, April 12 3:30-4:30 at Riverside (1625 Troy Sidney Rd. Troy) We encourage you to join us in our next meeting! Krista Smith, Co-Advisor MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR May 31 May 31 will be our annual Prospective Member luncheon. Although we encourage everyone to bring potential members to lunch anytime throughout the year, for the past several years we have set aside one day for a special PROSPECTIVE MEMBER luncheon. A special program will be offered at that luncheon where various Kiwanians will inform our guests of the benefits and opportunities our outstanding club provides to the youth of our community specifically and the entire community of Troy in general. Please begin making plans to bring a guest on the 31 st of May. And as always, all prospective member guests receive their first lunch free. 4 KIWANIS OHIO DISTRICT MID-YEAR EDUCATION CONFERENCE On Saturday March 4 th, 2017, Krista Smith and I attended the Ohio Mid-Year Education Conference along with three Aktion Club members (Katherine Smith, Angela Hess and Josh Berry). See photos below. In addition to attending a few different educational forums (Best Practices for Effective Club Meetings, Hand s On: Craft for Children in Hospitals, Service Projects to Complete with Aktion Clubs, Creating a Signature project & Fundraising Ideas), we also made a few new friends, had a great time and enjoyed a delicious ice cream sundae to end the day Seeing that current Kiwanis Ohio Governor Bill Flinta has chosen children s literacy as their First Family project for this year, and is titled Today s Readers Tomorrow s Leaders, he decided to liven things up with a few popular characters from children s book (as shown in one of the photos).
