1 Sourdough News August 2015 CHAPTER MEETING WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 19TH The next monthly Chapter meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 19th at the MOA Permit Center. This month s speaker will be Phil Steyer, Director, Government Relations and Corporate Communications with Chugach Electric Association The presentation topic: Permitting and Approvals Process for CEA s New Plant Board Meeting: Meeting Starts: Speaker: 10:30 am 11:45 am 12:00 pm MOA Permit Center, Anchorage, AK 4700 Elmore Road Please RSVP by Monday, August 17th by accepting the calendar invite or ing murphyfm@muni.org. PRESIDENT S CORNER Simply because I m writing a newsletter article doesn t mean that summer is over but it s getting close football season starts next week (for me anyway) and everyone I know is out dip netting on the Kenai. Must be close to time for our monthly IRWA meetings to resume in August. Regarding the August meeting (on Wednesday the 19 th ) we will have a BBQ with Burgers, Dogs, and Brats at the MOA Permit Center please check within this newsletter for more information regarding this meeting. Please help me to welcome the incoming officers for in August: Paula Brault (President), Fred Mortimer (Vice President), Louise Hooyer (Treasurer), and Claire Mueller (Secretary). At this point we are looking for someone to take over the Professional Development Committee Judy Hartley has decided to step down from this position if you are interested please let me know. Our education program will resume in September with the IRWA 200 Principles of Real Estate Negotiations class on the 24 th & 25 th followed by the IRWA 303 Managing the Consultant Process class on October 15 th & 16 th and then the IRWA 410 Reviewing Appraisals in Eminent Domain on October 28 th. If you or anyone you know is interested in these classes please sign up early to assure that the class remains on the schedule; last year we were forced to cancel a couple of classes due to low numbers of registrants. Remember that Anchorage will host the IRWA International Education Conference in June of 2017 if you would like to get involved in the planning of this event please let me know and I will make sure the right people get together with you! UPCOMING COURSES AND DESCRIPTIONS IRWA Course 200: Principles of Real Estate Negotiation Date: September 24 & 25 Location: MOA Training Room: 4700 Elmore Road Facilitator: Dan Beardsley SR/WA Coordinator: Matthew Burkholder matt.burkholder@alaska.gov; Course Description: This course focuses on a unique blend of the communication skill associated with successful, realworld right of way negotiations. With an emphasis on the practical as opposed to the theoretical, participants will explore their own negotiation skills, habits and styles with the goal of improving settlement rates of right of way acquisitions. IRWA Course 303: Managing the Consultant Process Date: October 15 & 16, 2015 Location: MOA Training Room: 4700 Elmore Road Facilitator: Lisa Harrison, SR/WA, R/W-URAC, R/W-RAC, R/W-NAC Coordinator: Tom Kretzschmar thomas.kretzschmar@hdrinc.com; Course Description: This course is designed to provide participants with a step-by-step understanding of the process of selecting and monitoring consultants. Participants will become aware of the issues and concerns of both agencies and consultants through the discussion of practical applications. Current trends are for Departments of Transportation, local public agencies and other governmental entities to do more contracting of right of way and land acquisition services. Issues relating to both the contracting and the monitoring of services from the perspectives of the agency and consultant are discussed.
4 PAGE 4 SOURDOUGH NEWS AUGUST 2015 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS CONTINUED IRWA Course 410: Reviewing Appraisals in Eminent Domain Date: October 28, 2015 Location: MOA Training Room: 4700 Elmore Road Facilitator: TBD Coordinator: Louise Hooyer louise.hooyer@alaska.gov; Course Description: This course includes sample types of reviews, which are presented along with required disclosures, certification and limiting conditions. This course concludes with an actual case study during which participants will apply review techniques to a specific problem. OPEN POSITIONS AND INVOLVEMENT OPPORTUNITIES We are currently looking for volunteers for: Professional Development Chair - Judy Hartley has served us well and is moving on to new endeavors. Future vacancy: Treasurer - Please consider this great opportunity to volunteer for our Chapter. Louise intends to train any incoming treasurer to smooth the transition. Newsletter - This issue will be the last newsletter until we get a new volunteer! Claire Mueller has offered to assist anyone who wants to take this over.
