2 A Note from Chapter President, Bruce Miller Welcome back to another season in Southwest Florida! Your Naples Chapter has a Board of Directors you can be proud of. With your help, our support of Penn State students, Penn State University, and the Penn State Alumni Association has reached a point that is rarely matched by other chapters. Last year we achieved a record setting year in several arenas, and with your help we look only to build upon that established legacy. To that end, we earned Elm Level Group of Distinction from the Penn State Alumni Association placing the Naples Chapter among the Top 15.6% of all Chapters and affiliate groups worldwide! Make no mistake this is a level of distinction NOT often achieved by groups even twice our size! This is certainly an achievement of which we can all be PENN STATE PROUD. Our goals for this Season: Increase Membership This past year was another record year for membership with 56 new members. We are most active in creating programs that will attract young alumni to the Naples Chapter. We currently have 8 Young Alumni (ages 35 and younger) members. Watch this number grow! We encourage you to invite every Penn Stater you meet to join the Naples Chapter. We are confident that membership will enrich their lives and continue to grow the diversity of the chapter. Increase Luncheon Attendance We ALWAYS have great speakers. Bring your friends who have not yet joined the Naples Chapter and give them a taste of the Naples Penn State experience. Increase Scholarship Support Help support local Penn State students who need financial help to attend our great University. (See Scholarship Article) Toys for the Holidays Needs Your Support Penn Staters are loving, caring individuals. Please contribute what you can to brighten local children s lives this Holiday Season. Increase Attendance at Penn State Football TV Parties at Bokampers. What a great way to show your Penn State Pride by cheering on our Nittany Lions right here in Naples! Increase THON support! The best and largest student-run philanthropic organization in the country is run by Penn State students in their fight against pediatric cancer. We encourage you to support THON and you will hear more about this very worthwhile effort throughout the season. Increase Membership in Voluntary Activities in Support of Your Board of Directors. Your 12-member Board is looking to partner with Naples Chapter members willing to do some of the behind-the-scenes work necessary to make the Naples Chapter an even more productive Chapter in support of Penn State students and our local neighborhoods. Please consider giving some time, a couple hours maximum, to work with Board members on seasonal projects. Achieve Elm Level Recognition Again! See article in this Newsletter. Finally, your Board of Directors wants to thank you for your magnificent support of the Naples Chapter and all we do. We could not do it without you. This is YOUR Chapter, we welcome your recommendations and participation and we look forward to seeing you often at the many events we have planned. I m looking forward to seeing you November 10 at our first seasonal luncheon in support of Toys for the Holidays and the Salvation Army. WE ARE! PENN STATE! Bruce Miller, 71
3 Naples Chapter SCHOLARSHIP Activity The Naples Chapter proudly supports Naples-area Penn State students seeking financial support to achieve their dream of attending Penn State! We have two separate endowed scholarships: The Naples Chapter Endowed Scholarship and The Naples Chapter Endowed Trustee Matching Scholarship. The Naples Chapter Endowed Scholarship is fully endowed however, the Trustee Matching Scholarship needs your support in order to meet our $50,000 principal pledge. Penn State is matching the award from this scholarship in an amount of $5,000 every year ad infinitum. When The Naples Chapter matching scholarship is fully endowed the scholarship awarded every year, forever, will be $7,500. When you complete your membership form, we ask that you take a little extra time to consider that a few extra dollars from each of our members could help another local student achieve academic success at our amazing university! Penn State has notified us that Stanley and Stefan Moussignac from Naples are the incoming freshmen to share in The Naples Chapter Endowed Scholarship this year. They have both enrolled at the Fayette campus in the Division of Undergraduate Studies. Both were thrilled to be recipients of our prestigious scholarships. Penn State has not notified us as yet of the names of the scholarship recipient for the Naples Chapter Endowed Trustee Matching Scholarship. YOUR NAPLES CHAPTER IS CURRENTLY RANKED AS ONE OF THE TOP THREE CHAPTERS IN TOTAL SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT! THANK YOU!! ELM LEVEL Group of Distinction The Naples Chapter achieves ELM LEVEL! The highest level is distinction does not come easy to local chapters or affiliate groups of the PSAA, but that is exactly what the hard work and dedication of the Naples chapter has achieved! In late September we were notified that for Fiscal Year ending June 31, 2015, we had earned ELM LEVEL GROUP OF DISTINCTION! Our group receives several honors along with this distinction, but not the least of which is an entry for a chance to win a $1,000 grant to be used toward an initiative of our choice! NONE of this would have been possible without YOU! We have an AMAZING MEMBERSHIP! THANK YOU! ** MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL ** We encourage all current members, friends of the chapter, and those who are new recruits to formally join the ranks BEFORE JANUARY 1, If you have not yet done so, please make a note to complete the attached application to stay up-to-date with all chapter activities. Please membership chair Janell Lopus for details at LopusJ@hotmail.com or complete and return the enclosed form.
4 PENN STATE HAPPY HOUR At the end of last season you may remember that we held Happy Hour and it was a huge success. We continued through the summer and made a TON of new friends and started a new tradition! ALL MEMBERS, FRIENDS AND POTENTIAL MEMBERS are invited to ALL our HAPPY HOUR events! We have an amazing time and are excited to host them at various locations throughout the southwest Florida area! STAY TUNED FOR OUR NEXT HAPPY HOUR! FOOTBALL WATCH PARTIES Football watch parties will be held at Bokamper s Sports Bar & Grill, 8990 Fontana Del Sol Way, Naples, FL throughout the end of the season. (Located in the Vanderbilt Galleria Shops). We will continue to have our private room in the back of the restaurant for watching Penn State s games!
