2 QIC-NRF FAC PURPOSE Provide leadership, act in an advisory capacity to the QIC NRF project, and be a voice for fathers whose children have been involved in the child welfare system.

3 Local FAC Site Reports All sites developed Local FAC with election of officers All sites host consistent FAC meetings Some sites involved in community outreach activities Some sites participate in local, regional and statewide presentations to social/family service community Some sites participated in meetings with key community leaders

4 Review & Comments on 5 ABA Draft Documents All FAC members provided written feedback & participated in discussion on the following ABA draft documents: Steps In The Juvenile Court Process Proposed Topics List: Materials for Fathers Navigating the Child Welfare System Guide No. 1: Your Rights & Responsibilities Guide No. 2: What to do in court Guide No. 3: What you should do outside of court New Documents will be reviewed for upcoming meeting Observations: Increased self-respect as a professional body and appreciation for QIC-NRF partners. More solution-focused vs. problems with the system-focused

5 QIC FAC Interviews Most fathers in attendance participated in the interviews Fathers represented the following locations: Colorado Springs (CO), Chicago(IL), Indianapolis (IN), Milwaukee(WI), Seattle(WA), Tarrant County (TX) Discussion and review of select interviews will take place at upcoming meeting

8 What NFAC Fathers Say Fathers feel like no one is hearing them or advocating for them. Recruiter/Facilitator needs to listen to the father s needs before pushing the paperwork or program. Facilitator will initially serve as fathers source of courage and self-esteem.

9 What NFAC Fathers Say Many men lack confidence in government programs because of past unfulfilled commitments from government programs ex., completed job training program but never received job. Men feel inadequate to face court system alone. Me vs. The World mentality. Self support is critical If you can t take care of yourself, it s hard to focus on your child or the program.

10 What FAC Fathers Say Due to personal father-absence, many men do not have any idea how to be a father They learn parenting in the process Our kids are teaching us how to be parents.

13 QIC-NRF Workshops & Conferences Observations: Father Involvement Message not as tough a sell as previously thought How to engage fathers is the challenge Participants know the sound-bites but now want T/TA Some participants misperceive father engagement to equal child endangerment or minimization of concern for child well-being Ignorance and/or fear of (low income at-risk) men/male culture is constantly expressed by participants Lack of confidence in ability to support fathers involvement in a perceived mother and child well-being focused policy environment. Finding additional time to engage father(s) QIC Partners (AHA, ABA, NFI) name equity carry weight sometimes not the message but messenger.
