Isn't there a story in your life related to your work or personal life that has meant a great deal to you and helped you to be a better Kiwanian? It doesn't have to be long. Just about five minutes. Sharing a Reflection would help feed our human and spiritual values as fellow Kiwanians. Speak to Al Wilson He will be glad to help you schedule sharing a Good Story. Why we are Kiwanians: A card will be sent to any member who is ill or in need of cheering up by member Ann Graves. Please give her names of any who need this nice service. Please call her at or her at amngraves@comcast.net New Honorary Members: Long time member Don Cross has been awarded Honorary Membership by our Board of Directors. He has been a strong member of this club and is suffering from ill health at this time. Call him or visit when you can. State College Kiwanis Club Mission Statement Guided by the Six Objects of Kiwanis, the State College Kiwanis Club is dedicated to providing philanthropic assistance to our community, especially to programs that benefit children and youth. Weekly dinner meetings support this mission that feature invited speakers on a variety of topics, and by cooperative community service and fund raising projects in which all members are encouraged to participate. The Objectives of Kiwanis International To give primacy to the human and spiritual, rather than to the material values of life. To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships. To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business, and professional standards To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent aggressive, and serviceable citizenship To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, To render altruistic service, and to build better communities. To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism, which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and good will.
Elimination Project update - The effort to eliminate maternal neonatal tetanus has just received wonderful news from Kiwanis International. Just a few weeks ago Mauritania celebrated the elimination of MNT. Mauritania is a rather large country in Northwestern Africa. The real news is that the World Health Organization has validated that the entire nation of India has eliminated MNT. Elimination is measured as no more than one case per thousand births. India is a country with a quarter billion women of childbearing age. Little by little we are winning the battle against MNT. The list of validated countries continues to grow. UNICEF identified fifty nine countries at the beginning of the project, and we are now at the point where thirty seven countries have been validated as having eliminated MNT. The effort has to continue because we still have twenty two countries in which babies and even mothers are still dying from the horrible disease - tetanus. We can be proud of the effort that our club has been making in this endeavor. As a Platinum Club with a contribution of $64,500 equivalent to $1,500 per member we are at the forefront of contributions. There are only a few Platinum Clubs of our caliber in Kiwanis International. We still have several thousands of dollars to commit to the effort. Depending who is counting and considering our budget commitment for 2015, we will be within two thousand dollars of our pledge. The total effort by Kiwanis International is to raise $110 to eliminate MNT, and Kiwanis International is reporting that we have reached the $83 million plateau in five short years. Kiwanis International realizes that we will not make 110 million this year, but the effort will go on until In order for a country to be declared eliminated of MNT by the World Health Organization the requirements have to be measurable, and that takes several years of verified statistics. Remember that every $1.80 contributed to the effort saves or protects one life somewhere in this world. Paul Mackes Multi Divisional Coordinator Region 3
May 2015 Kiwanis Club of State College - K01367 Mr. Al Wilson 1449 Curtin St State College, PA Dear Al: Thank you for your club s continued commitment to The Eliminate Project and for increasing your US$64,500. State College is among a small and exclusive group to make such an incredible commi a Platinum Club. Through your generous pledge, every member of your club will help protect more mothers and save their future babies from maternal and neonatal tetanus. Your club s support is helping the Kiwanis International family make history through The Eliminate Since we joined UNICEF in the fight to eliminate MNT, infant mortality rates have dropped signifi 25 fewer babies die every day. And since 2011, 15 countries have eliminated MNT. Because of Kiwanis clubs like yours, vaccines are reaching the women who need them most thos world s poorest and most remote regions. Thank you for leading the way. Your support is crucial as we build momentum for our final march t I encourage you to celebrate your club s commitment. Post one of our Platinum Club graphics or a on your club s website, in club/district publications or through your social media outreach. Downlo graphics and sample language at TheEliminateProject.org/newresources. Together, we can and will eliminate this disease. Blessed beyond measure, Randolph L. DeLay Campaign Chairman, The Eliminate Project
From Kathryn Mackes: This is my report for the PKF board meeting concerning the District Foundation's scholarships for this year. I am completing my 6th year on this board and serving as the chair of the scholarship committee. Scholarship Report for June 13, 2015 The 2015 Pennsylvania Kiwanis Foundation scholarship applications began arriving via in the new system developed for computer in February of this year. Scholarship applications arrived in the following categories and numbers: Key Club One Year ( $1000) 22 Key Club Four Year ( $1000 each yr.) 30 These are the ones which are endowed or named-there are four. Don & Myrt Nieman 4 (Note: This is the first year since receiving this endowment that any applications have been received.) Circle K 10 Dependent 2 Total: 68 Scholarship Committee Members: Tom Wierbowski, Linda Prior, Margaret Smith, Mark Mishinki, Marty Schaefer, and Kathryn Mackes On April 25, 2015, all members with the exception of Tom Wierbowski (health issues) were present at the State College, PA residence of Kathryn and Paul Mackes to make the final selections for scholarships. (See the additional page for the names and scholarships awarded.) Once the selections were made, the following week the choices were sent to the PKF treasurer, Dale Brackin, so the next step of processing the awards could be completed with students providing the necessary documentation that noted their chosen college or university. The monies will be sent to these selected schools so the students will have them in their accounts. The chairperson, Kathryn Mackes, then compiled letters of acceptance to each of the chosen applicants. Several letters of gratitude have either been received, s, or phone calls from the students. An article was submitted to the Keystone Kiwanian for placement for the next issue. This publication can be located online. Please read the following pages for additional information: The comment column was useful for the committee in utilizing the criteria on the application cover sheets to determine if all of the items were contained in the scholarships. (Note: I have included these cover pages in the packet for the board s perusal.) Perhaps the scholarship committee will want to consider these comments for 2016 and make changes for next year s selection process.
Discussion was held concerning the methods that some of the scholarships were submitted onlineblurry, difficult to read and perhaps a note to the applicants next year to use a standard system for submitting online. Windows photo viewer was used and this caused some problems in reading. Another consideration should be noted that some members did not have high speed internet and this was a difficulty in downloading to view the applications. Respectfully submitted, Kathryn T. Mackes PKF Scholarship Chair
