2 KIN/CYSTIC FIBROSIS CANADA PARTNERSHIP From a relationship that began on a barstool in 1963, a 48-year friendship has grown into a committed partnership. Over the years, Kinsmen and Kinettes have devoted their efforts to an incredible assortment of events ranging from Daisy Days to road tolls to barbecues all to help fight cystic fibrosis. The friendship between Kinsmen and Kinettes and Canadians with CF began out of a conversation between Dr. Douglas Crozier, then director of the CF Clinic at The Hospital for Sick Children, and Kinsmen Bill Skelly. During a chance meeting at a Scarborough pub, Dr. Crozier spoke to Bill about his young CF patients. This conversation left Bill interested in joining the fight against cystic fibrosis, and Dr. Crozier was invited to speak to the North York Kinsmen Club. Almost immediately, the North York Kinsmen enthusiastically backed the CF cause. By 1964, District 8 had formally adopted CF as its District Service Project. District 8's commitment sparked the interest of other Districts, and, before long, involvement spread Canada-wide, throughout the Kin organization. In 1987, the Association of Kinsmen and Kinette Clubs adopted CF as a National Service Project. Today, Kinsmen and Kinettes remain our loyal friends, continually fundraising for CF research and promoting CF awareness. In 1997, Kin reached a great milestone when total funds raised for CF amounted to $25 million. In 2001, Kin raised more than $1 million to help beat CF, bringing the Kin's cumulative contribution to the CCFF to more than $30 million! These funds have helped Canadian researchers make major strides in the fight against cystic fibrosis. The hard work and support of Kinsmen and Kinettes is deeply appreciated by Canadians with CF. Since 1964, Kin and the CCFF have shared in many exciting accomplishments, including the discovery of the gene responsible for CF in The discovery would not have been possible without the tremendous help of our Kin friends. When Kinsmen and Kinettes first joined in the fight against CF, children with the disease were not expected to live past the age of four. But today, because of Kin, children and young adults with cystic fibrosis are often living into their 30s and beyond. For almost every year of Kin support, we have earned an extra year of life for a CF child. We could never have come so far, so fast, without the continued support of Kin. In the past 48 years, Kinsmen and Kinettes across the country have worked tirelessly to help beat CF, contributing over $40 million towards cystic fibrosis research and patient care.

Several of the current and past club members have friends or family afflicted with the disease. As well, Kevin Denbok was raised in Collingwood and was well known to our club. It is very easy in our club to gather enthusiasm and volunteers for a project when the proceeds are donated to Cystic Fibrosis. Throughout the year, we take every opportunity to promote CF awareness in our community. Over the past years, our club has come up with some creative venues to bring Cystic Fibrosis awareness into the community. This year was no different than other years, and we rose to the challenge to promote Cystic Fibrosis awareness and raise dollars for CF. Once again, our club took the opportunity to participate in the National CF Day, and the Great Strides Walk. The Kinette Club held their first Yard Sale with all proceeds donated to Cystic Fibrosis. Also, again this year, we promoted and raised monies for CF at our Annual Craft Auction. See the following submission for details:

4 NATIONAL CF DAY: Upon the Kinette Club of Collingwood receiving the brochure for promoting National Cystic Fibrosis Day and seeing the club s picture from a previous National CF Day event on the front page, it sparked some creativity within our members. Members decided that it would be the best public relations / advertising opportunity to place a table on the main street of Collingwood, beside the Town Hall, to offer information and retail opportunities to support Cystic Fibrosis Fundraising Efforts. At our booth, we sold jewellery that was handmade by Kinettes at a number of work parties; cookbooks that we have compiled over the years; Epicure Spices that a member who is a consultant, has given us for fundraising and daisies for donations. We also took the opportunity to hand out our Fire stickers to place on children s windows in the home to help fire fighters locate those that are helpless in case of emergency. It was a wonderful opportunity to give the community information about the Kin CF history and as well, show them what the Kinette Club of Collingwood does to raise funds to find a cure or control of this deadly disease. 5 GREAT STRIDES WALK The Kinette Club of Collingwood, along with friends and Kin from around the community, once again participated in the Great Strides Walk at the Toronto Zoo, on May 27 th. Our Team entitled the Kintastic Walkers took on the challenge of decorating a flag for this event. We had to display what represented our team the best! We chose to have animal pictures and name them after all team members, and it was a HIT! We were thrilled to have our picture taken with Jennifer Valentyne, who was the host for the day! As well, that photo won the District One Kin Photography Award for best representing Kin ideals. The team consisted of 6 members and we raised a total of $750 in pledges and are planning a come back for this coming year. Where are information was publicized: 1. The Peak FM 2. 6 YARD SALE FOR CYSTIC FIBROSIS A new idea and held for the first time, this inaugural yard sale was a huge hit for the Kinette Club of Collingwood. We were thrilled through advertising to have a number of members of the public inquiring about donating goods for the cause. Many contacted us saying they had friends / family with CF and were thrilled to contribute. Kinettes, Kin Family and friends all donated their goods for this oneday event held on July 14 th at good Kinette Kim Dadswell s home. The anxious purchasers arrived starting at 630 in the morning and the day flew by! In total, selling bits and bobs, treasures that others would love, and stuff that you d think no one would want; the Kinettes raised a total of $836.51!!! 7 ANNUAL CRAFT AUCTION The Kinette Club of Collingwood s annual Craft Auction was held on Thursday November 15 th at the Orange Lodge Hall Collingwood. This annual event has invitations sent to all Kinette Clubs in the Zone as well as friends and family of our members. This year we had over 40 people in attendance; one of the best crowds in the last few years. Our auction consists of home made goodies, crafts, items and some store-bought craftie things. All items are auctioned off during the evening to the highest bidder. Throughout the evening, raffle and 50/50 tickets are also sold. This year, the raffle and 50/50 proceeds were donated directly to Cystic Fibrosis. The total raised and donated was $ During the dinner break some history of the Collingwood club was shared as well as our commitment and partnership with Cystic Fibrosis. Many of the attendees were unaware of our affiliation and this was a wonderful opportunity to share our goals. Where information was publicized: 1. Facebook event 2. District One Website 3.
