1 November 2018 District Governor s News Let s Go Forth and Do Great Things in Service. This is a special month that we gain an hour of sleep and lose the opportunity of daylight going to work in the morning and returning home at night. This is the beginning month we must be EXTRA cautious when we are driving anywhere; we MUST be extra alert due to the dark for: pedestrians, school kids, animals, and other vehicles. It is also the month that we celebrate Diabetes awareness. Check out Lions Clubs International updated website and see how clubs can make a difference. Explore Service Project Planners and other resources designed to help you and your club get involved with diabetes efforts in your community. More information will be forthcoming about our District planned Spring Stride Walk. A new approach to club officer training will be conducted Saturday, November 17 from 8:30-12:30 at the Resource Center at St. Clair Hospital, Bridgeport Way SW, Lakewood, WA. This will be a 4 hour group training that includes president/vice president, secretary, treasurer, membership, and service as one training session this is club training NOT individual officer training. Please plan to attend the ENTIRE 4 hour session. Just got back from Whistler where many from District 19C had a great opportunity to network with 400+ Lions to learn enhanced and new ideas. What a great effort put forth by Convention Chair George

2 (From Page One) District 19C clubs received well-deserved recognition for their dedication and hard work on behalf of Lions. As you and your clubs prepare for holiday events, please take time to breathe and be good to yourself; try to include those that will be alone this holiday season either in holiday celebrations or as a volunteer. When we are an active volunteer it is just a little harder to worry about problems. Thank you for being an important part of the world s largest service organization Lions Club International. LCIF Lions are changing the world one community at a time, by addressing needs at home and around the globe. We are 1.4 million men and women who believe that kindness matters. And when we work together, we can achieve bigger goals. Lions and LCIF help Communities Recover. Most of our Lions clubs donate to LCIF in order to recognize someone in their club with a Melvin Jones Fellowship. I would like each club and club member to step out of that box and just think of helping people in need. Please donate money to LCIF even if you do not think you can get a Melvin Jones. The money adds up and eventually even a small club will have money to do one. It is so necessary to our Foundation that clubs contribute something every year. In order to give aid and not run out of money, we need to keep sending money. This is the only foundation or program where all donations are given to and for Aid to our fellow Man. The full donation goes to the foundation and is used only by the Foundation. No percentage of funds is kept or applied elsewhere. PLEASE send your donations in now. The world has already had some disasters and funds are needed. Thanks to the clubs who have already made their donation. DG Sharon Sikes

Let s mentor and retain members to provide more hands for service. Contact Sandy Johnston Dist. 19C Retention Chair at ssj@hctc.com if you have questions or need further information on The Lions Journey. TO GIVE IS TO SERVE LCIF LAUCHES BIGGEST CAPITAL CAM- PAING EVER In July, 2018, Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) launched Campaign 100: Empowering Service. The US$ million comprehensive capital campaign is slated to span three years, wikht an impact expected to last for generations. The raised will ensure that Lions have the resources needed to increase their service impact, fight diabetes and expand their global causes. The goal is to empower Lions to serve more than 200 million individuals per year by 2021 and ensure that 100 years from now Lions will still be making the world a better place. PLEASE read your September edition of LION magazine.

6 From the Editor What Lions Are Lions are men and women that want to do something to make their community a better place. They are devoted to giving back and helping those that need it. Lions care about the Environment, the hungry and many other items. They truly want to make a difference in this world on community at a time. Lions want to be community changers. They don t accept the status quo, but rather they want what is best for the people they live with. A pair of glasses for a child or a Senior Citizen may not seem like much but to that person it means the world. That meal you handed to a person may be the only thing they have eaten all day. To them you are changing their world. When you do a health screen and catch a problem those people are forever grateful. When you give a Special Olympian a pair of glasses and see the smile you know that you made that persons day as well. It may not seem like much to you but you are making profound differences in others lives. That one or two hours we donate to a project may seem like not much but to those who we serve it means the world. You may ask am I making a Difference? The answer is that we are, as an individual, as a club and as a member of the community. It s like the joke how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. That s how we make a difference in our communities, one small act of service, of compassion is how we make our communities the best that they can be.

8 Clean Air & Energy Support Mission of Lions Club By Dr. Barak Gale, Lion, Lacey Midday Lions/ Eco Lions Branch Member As a Lion in Tumwater, and as a volunteer climate educator, I want to inform fellow Lions about climate issues that deserve our consideration in light of our Mission to empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs. As an Optometric Physician my most gratifying experience was providing eye care in a remote mountain village in Guatemala, in I still feel a trembling thinking about the patients who, having traveled many miles on foot, were given the gift of sight. They had tears in their eyes, and spoke words of blessing in a language I didn t understand. Needless to say, those Lions donated glasses were a miracle. I wonder now how the beautiful people I saw back then are coping with the new prolonged periods of drought, which is a devastating impact of climate change. The UN informs us that 3.5 million people from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, require humanitarian assistance. And what about drought in our own country? NASA projects the U.S. may suffer from a megadrought for years during the latter half of this century. Drought is but one impact of climate change. We are already witnessing enormous health consequences. The American Medical Association Report on Global Climate Change states: The potential exists for devastating events with serious health implications, including extreme heat and cold events, flooding and droughts, increases in vectors carrying infectious diseases, and increases in air pollution. We know too well the effects of wildfire smoke in Washington State, with hazardous air quality up to three times worse than Beijing. This is a global emergency. On October 8, 2018, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change issued the most dire warning yet to humanity: We have 12 years to limit climate change catastrophe. The press release noted: We are already seeing the consequences of 1 C of global warming through more extreme weather, rising sea levels and diminishing Arctic sea ice... The decisions we make today are critical in ensuring a safe and sustainable world for everyone, both now and in the future... The next few years are probably the most important in our history, More than 6,000 scientific references and 42,000 expert comments are cited in the report. There is good news, however. We are now in the midst of a clean energy revolution. Solar and wind capacity and jobs are far outpacing fossil fuels. This transition to clean energy is economically prudent as well as the right thing to do for our kids. What can we Lions do? Most urgently, please demand smart policies that promote rapid transition to clean energy. Speak about these things to friends, other Lions, connecting the dots, to build the momentum for change. Join the Eco Lions and Climate Reality Project- Thurston County. We can also walk the talk by planting trees, riding bicycles in lieu of driving, vacationing locally, insulating our homes. As Teddy Roosevelt once said: "Of all the questions which can come before this nation... there is none which compares in importance with the great central task of leaving this land even a better land for our descendants than it is for us."
